 I am looking advice of an efficent garage not the [VW] dealership however as their prices are over expensive. I had a past dealing there that I choose to forget.

I am due a new timing belt change/service at 47,000 miles for a 1999 VW Golf gti unleaded petrol car.

Could anyone reccomend from past experience and dealings of a suitable garage in and around the North Coast area.
Very grateful.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I have just had a 40,000 service on a 5 year old VW Golf GTI Petrol.

I thought the belt change was only important for diesel cars.

As long as the belt is in good condition for petrol cars it does not need to be changed.

!!!

If the manufacturer recommends a timing belt change at a certain number of miles then it's very worth doing - if it snaps then your engine might end up as scrap.

Most manufacturers have either a mileage or time limit, such as 5 years, for a cambelt to be changed. As has been said, get it changed if it needs doing or things can get real expensive. I had a cambelt go on a Fiat years ago, 15k miles & 6 months before the recommended change. It cost me £1100.

I've used the Portrush Garage up behind where the Port Centre was a couple of times and have been happy so far.
