Its the worse move thats happened at our surgery. My gp retired at xmas, there`s a load more new gp`s started but you can never see the same one twice - it might as well be a NHS walk in centre - which i believe are very good.
My hubby has really bad long term health problems and he can never see his old gp, i have to ring up and ask to speak to him on hubbies behalf.
The day of family gp`s are over, and its sad.I`m also disgusted because my brother died this week and not one gp has been in touch with his wife, simply because we don`t have a family gp anymore, so there`s no checking up system to see how family is coping.
Has anyone else found this to be true?

Yes. In my local practice there are 5 or 6 GPS and they are all different. Two of them are really nice and modern. 2 are old fashioned but know their stuff and the last 2, well the less said about the the better. Rude and made me feel like I was wasting their time. Bring on the old style I say, at least then if you didn't like your GP you could change.

I doubt the GPs like the system they work in any more than the patients.

Unlike dentists, they are a bit more tied into the quirks, targets and management led healthcare of the NHS though.

As I have said before though, give it a few more years, and the problems of doctors 'going private' will be just as bad as dentists over the last few years.

It will be interesting then to see who pays up for an 'old style' system, and who chases down the very last NHS GP no matter how bad the system they work under is.

I have never really understood this idea of being registered to a GP. At my practice, you can choose to see who you want but that might mean accepting an appointment a few days later than you might have liked. Therefore, if you know in advance you need to go to the GP you can book to see the doctor of your choice. If you dont want to wait, then presumably you are unwell enough not to really care who you see. That would certainly be my view anyway.

My friend's surgery operated the system where you only saw your "own" GP. What this meant in practice was that if your doctor was on holiday or fully booked, you had to wait. She was once offered an appointment three weeks away. My colleague is also at a surgery where this practice was in operation and had the same experience. Now, they can get an appointment at the next surgery session as they are booked in with whoever is available. Both their practices also operate the policy that if you book in advance you can choose so those returning for follow ups can see the same doctor and maintain the continuity if they choose.

Booking in advance seems to be discouraged at our practice: if you decide later that you need to revisit with the same problem the default option is 'phone on the day' and you've got no idea if you'll get to see the same doctor or not. It's a real struggle to persuade them to let us book ahead to see a particular GP!

The theory behind the 'not booking in advance' means that all appointments on that day are available, and therefore response can be made to the demand, bearing in mind that the Primary Care access targets are an appointment with a health professional within 24 hrs, and a GP within 48hrs.

Our surgery works both systems simultaneously, there are appointments which can be booked in advance, and appointments which are allocated on the day the demand arises - and by that I mean actual appointments and not a 'come and sit and wait system'. And the surgery is open from 8am - 7pm. Excellent - we are completley happy with our health care - its free at the point of delivery, and we don't have to walk miles to the nearest health professional as some people do in the world.

Mine always worked on the we'll fit you in with the Dr. you are registered to first, and failing that if you want to see someone quicker then you can have any Dr. On the odd occasion I visit I'll always make it to see my Dr. he knows me and knows that if I'm there it's for a reason not just cause I fancied a day off work! I like that system. I remember going to a practise where you couldn't make appointments it was on a turn up and get seen basis, which if you are really poorly is that last thing you want to do! 3 hours later I still hadn't seen a Dr. Had to call one out in the night as it all got worse, turned out to be a kidney infection! I prefer the former system

we have about 7/8 gps at out practice but i always see the same one. After reading some posts on here i know I'm very lucky as i have a disability and to see the same one keeps continuity as he knows all my history automatically.

At my surgery, you are registered with 1 doctor, but you can ask to see any of them.

I try to avoid the one I am registered with
