I've just bought an X reg MB diesel estate. Unfortunately I was so keen to buy it that I didn't realise it had no service history. I rang the garage I bought it from (not MB), and they said if it wasn't in the car there wasn't one!! Just wondered if there is any other way I could get hold of the service history, supposing it has been done by MB.Any advice would be appreciated.

As far as I am aware the Merc garages are simply francises (or small groups of francises) and therefore I doubt there is any central records held on what work each garage has done. Short of writting to each one and asking them to check their records you are probably out of luck - even if you do then they may argue there is a data protection issue of them handing over the details (after all they will contain the name and address of the previous owner).

The price you have paid for it will ultimately have reflected the fact it has no service history (or at least should have) and therefore whilst it will reduce the resell value (assuming when you sell it it will have a partial service history) the loss for the first 5 years will be covered by the reduction from your own purchase price reduction (plus as cars get older the discount for no service history tends to get less anyway)

Lots of main dealers will provide you with a print out of the history, I once contacted an Alfa dealer and they did it for me for free, but like Astaroth says, you need to track them down first. If you go to the Mercedes Benz website, you can find all the dealers contact details there, maybe you could ring them. Also try the last registered keepers on the log book.

Worth trying the last keeper as it may be that they still have it and just forgot to leave it in the car - or they may tell you its and old dog and has never been near a service bay................
