I agree with the others - this is not what the Quick Reads tokens are for. If you aren't going to get money off books with them, give them to someone who will

FloFlo

You could sell them on ebay.

Most people use vouchers WITHIN REASON.

And when these sorts of vouchers are supposed to be used for a certain purpose (ie Children and books) then I hope you are proud of yourself.

I've sent mine to my kids school.

I would've had to feed my kids if these vouchers hadn't come along, so would rather donate them to help in their education.

Kept a few pens, but sent everything else to help out school.

Carla, I think you might be better posting on the vouchers board, there are other people there who use these vouchers. You will nver be able to use 600 as discounts off your shopping though as even if you did have a tescos or an asda near to you they will only accept a few at a time if you didn't buy the product. I think the most they say you can use at one of the self scan ones is about ten per cent of your shopping before this starts to attract a supervisor. There are stories on the other thread of people being banned from their local tescos due to mis use of vouchers.

why not donate the vast majority and keep a few for if you go anywhere with a tescos or asda

I have to admit, if you read the first thread where you applied for this, most people were and have used these in tescos, and posted that, so why is everyone having a go at this person??

Im so grateful to the OP who posted the freebie, and she knows it!!

I think you are greedy!! yeah you may think we are two faced, but this co. sent out loads of freebies and you want to save £600 off your shopping, at their cost.

I have shared my freebies and my oh has put the vouchers on his counter (a bank) for his customers to use.

I do not think we should abuse this company!!!!!! They have been really good and I personally as an avid reader I shall use several vouchers on books and feel chuffed as I was fortunate to have a voucher/s!!!.

Some companies abuse their customers and then it feels ok for a little revenge, but what has this co ever done wrong?? I don't know how Tescos claim their costs back, but if you spend your £600 off vouchers at Tescos and they reclaim trhe cash from this company, surely, if everyone was as greedy as you this comapny would go into liquidation.

If you need these vouchers to feed your kids you are not putting your kids first!!! Sorry I have been on benefits myself, after my first husband left me, I had a mortgage of £300 too, but I managed, yes it was hard, very hard, but I didn't smoke, only went out when my family treated me and my friends and parents from school passed on their clothes to my kids!! Embarrassing yes, but I was ever so grateful and at no point did i say basically that i didn't care if i screwed someone cos i had to feed my kids!!!

These vouchers have already changed, presumably due to people abusing them.

The first year I got them (probs 1997ish), it was £1 off any book, and they specifically promoted some £1 books, thus you got one free.

Then it changed to £1 off any book over a certain amount.

Now, it's £1 off certain "Quick Read" books!

If people keep abusing them then what will they do next? It's OK using one or two off your shopping, but if you deliberately obtain 600 for that purpose then that's wrong. No matter how you try and justify it, I hope you're ashamed of youself.

You could sell them on ebay.
nobody has bid for any of them yet cos you only need to email world book token and you can get hundreds for free so i dont think ebay will work!!!
i would give them in at school, healthcentre, jobcentre, library or local shops perhaps then it will encourage people to buy a book and read it or post through letterboxes in surrounding area to target readers the kids would love to post them for you! good luck whatever you do with them!

I too have lots of vouchers, I got 7 free kids books (£1 each, or free with world book day vouchers) for my sons Christmas.. I think Tesco have stopped allowing you to redeem them unless they are offset against the books. I agree, the vouchers are great but its a a shame we cant use them to help our food shopping budget. We only got one voucher for my two kids as my other daughter was taken to hospital on that day, its a shame as she reads a lot.

Thanks for those who have offered some vouchers, I just really wanted to have a rant that our school didnt consider those who were away on the day they gave them out, as I said my daughter had to go to hospital for a scan on the day. For record she has a brilliant attendance record it was only recently she was diagnosed with a genetic disorder.

Anyone who has spare tokens could try and redeem them against books from bookstores and donate the books, to whichever good cause People dont always appreciate vouchers but they would appreciate a book more. Some books only cost a pound and that means they are free with the vouchers.

I was all for taking my coupons to my local Asda and getting some cash off, I thought a couple of quid off wouldn't hurt, but I never actually thought of the consequences of us all doing it. Maybe this MSEs the same, after all is that not why we're all on this site, to get a little freebie now and then? I bought a new pc a couple of months ago and managed to get back online. The money I've saved by accessing this site has covered the cost of the pc and at least a years broadband internet access!!

BTW, I also have received stacks of quickread vouchers. I do use 1 each time I shop (I'd say I've used 20 so far) - but have also donated lots to a local scout group and community centre, so don't feel too guilty.

Tescos recoup a small handling fee for taking the coupons.
The real profiteers are the customers who use the coupons dishonestly to walk away with groceries without paying for them! Why should someone else pick up their tab?

Those that don't stock the books won't accept the vouchers in my experience.

My book vouchers have made me a mini star in school, lol.

I have been sent 600 vouchers and loads of pens, pencils, erasers etc and took them into school. We have quite a busy time coming up with Parents Evening, Sports Day etc and so we have made a little 'book' corner for the parents and carers to visit where we have put up the posters i got and they can see what teh vouchers are for.

All the year 6's that are leaving us soon have each got the pens, pencils etc and for Nursery and Reception class have a book each I went to the local Borders with the vouchers, explained that I wanted 65 books for 4 to 5 year olds and wanted to exchange them for these vouchers. They were very happy to help out and threw in a feww bookmarks and stuff of there own, so all in all a nice little freebie for my school.

I work there voluntary and have done for the past 18 months ... hopefully the Head will see I've done a nice little job and pay me.

However, I did keep back about 25 of the vouchers to use on my 'big big beer and food shop' at Christmas.

Who needs 600 anyway? Give them to your local school or community group ... even get the local kids to put a few through the neighbours doors, and maybe keep a few for yourself.

To be honest I am an avid reader and would greatly appreciate some of these tokens as my children and I love books. But what I dont agree with is it being used for groceries as the purpose for them is books only!!.And as for the ebay thing, that is just nasty as you are getting them free to start off with so why sell them in the first place?. I can see these vouchers becoming extinct as more and more people are abusing them, and honest people are having to suffer.

hey poppy i would aprreciate if you have 2 spare I could ask you for them for my 2 children they are in nursery so didn't benefit from this, although a few other local nurseries had them:confused: . son starts school next year so maybe he will get 1 there. I signed up to grolier? (books for children( the disney ones) when they were born. I now have about 50 odd of them and every night i read them 4 lol because they want 2 different ones each although my daughter for the past year has been getting me to read her the little mermaid every night for about 6 months now. But anyway I would use the tokens to good use. I myself have over 200 books and although i haven't read them all I still love a good read.

I received 200 of these tokens today with some pens etc. I emailed the company regarding them and was told they can only be redeemed against adult books!
I will be taking the majority of mine to my local library, and also attempting to redeem them against a couple of kiddies books, my son is 1 now and is enjoying looking at the pictures in books.

If anyone didnt get any and would like a couple then pm me and ill send you some.

I've just offered some to my girls' school and they'll take 400. I still have 200 - I'll ask at the library as I know they've been selling the Quick Read books. I shall probably use 1 or 2 to buy Quick Read books (not to use in ASDA).

As for the pens, pencils, rubbers, bookmarks etc - I dunno

Is it still possible to get them? If so, can someone tell me how.

hi thunder and sharon,
you can order the quick read tokens and promotional packs ie pens , pencils, rubbers etc by using this link here

http://www.niace.org.uk/QuickReads/register.html

some people have found this was a little quicker than email the company, altho emailing them worked fine for me

YES I AM SERIOUS I AM DIDING WHAT EVERY BODY ELSE IS DOING GETTING MONEY OF THERE SHOPPING WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT

We're not all doing this as it is effectively ripping off a charity to the tune of £600.

I've had 600 tokens and have given most of them to my local schools to distribute to their parents. I've given some to family and will be buying some quick reads as birthday gifts.

I think using the odd one or two in tesco is probably just about acceptable but 600 is not.

I suppose you can put them on ebay as it is buyer beware but even that is a bit mean as everyone can download them for nothing.

I'm all for money saving and I don't see anything wrong with using tokens in Tesco when the voucher is for a multi-national product as they already have huge profit margins but taking money from charity is just not on in my book. (if you'll pardon the pun)

I have 2 Rainbows and 1 Brownies group that I know of so I'll give some out then, but I still have about 100 left. The bookshop and the library aren't interested. Any more suggestions?

I think you'll find people always thank those that try to help others.
IMHO this is a genuine attempt at improving poor literacy levels which has been hijacked by the 'get-something-for-nothing' brigade.
We all like a bargain, but not at the expense of initiatives like this. Sorry about the long words.

I have an ASDA right near me, but the thought of defrauding a charity makes my conscience !!!!! me severely. I have given 400 bookmarks and £1 tokens to school. Given some vouchers to friends (to buy books with), given some vouchers and the pens, pencils etc to Rainbows and Brownies groups and given the rest of the vouchers to a church for people to pick up if they want them.

i took my lot of vouchers and stuff (must admit i robbed a few pens for myself!) to streetwise, i gave them out at drama and then sent them for the drop-in to be handed out there too.

i noticed today that quickreads are only £1.99 in asda, so i treated myself to a book for 99p :)

as for asking for thanks, thats a bit cheap dont you think?

and saying you need to put food in your kids mouths, if youre really that destitue arent there any benefits youre entitled to? if you really need to spend £600 of a charities money on food, i think you could look for a different charirty which is aimed at helping families below teh poverty line.

personally, i think shops that accept these vouchers for anything other than books should be taken to task.

Im not going to get into the debate over what should be done with the tokens. I would just like to say what i have done with mine as this may help others decide what to do with theirs.

We have a large percentage of international students at our university and their partners study english, they are coming to the end of their time here and have learnt a lot. I have passed on a large percentage of the vouchers to them so they can buy books to take back to their country which they can then keep practicing their english, without having a 300 page book to read (which you must admit is a norm for adult pitched books) and getting dis-enchanted.

I have passed out more vouchers to some of the other students and have kept some for myself. With these i will be buying books for people for Christmas, a cheaper present for some people I know, but I will be making them a book mark, and afterall its the thought that counts!

The pencils and pens have gone to the local school.

I have to say it worries me that someone NEEDS to use vouchers meant for books to buy groceries to feed their children. I can't help wonder what was done to feed the children before the vouchers and what will be done when the vouchers can no longer be exploited this way? Perhaps get a job? Or at least discuss needs with the APPROPRIATE charity?

I think the reason this thread has continued for 3 days is that people are stunned by what they are reading. The abusive responses and request for thanks is quite amazing.

Carla, if you are nice to people on MSE and don't outright abuse anything and everything, people are helpful and kind.

Oh, and regarding your last post on the Freebies Board that has thankfully been removed: you will have to do a little work yourself looking through threads and finding out information for yourself, just like everyone else. It's all here, can't be any easier than that, can it?

If you still require assistance AFTER that, I am positive you will get as much help as you kindly ask for.

And when you abuse my comment, please, please, please use a dictionary. It's really annoying trying to decipher your messages. Take a little time to write properly, it’s simply being courteous.

Decipher \De*ci"pher\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Deciphered; p. pr.
& vb. n. Deciphering.] [Pref. de- + cipher. Formed in
imitation of F. d['e]chiffrer. See Cipher.]
1. To translate from secret characters or ciphers into
intelligible terms; as, to decipher a letter written in
secret characters.

2. To find out, so as to be able to make known the meaning
of; to make out or read, as words badly written or partly
obliterated; to detect; to reveal; to unfold.

3. To stamp; to detect; to discover.

Thank you for this inspired juxtaposition - I laughed out loud!

Incidentally, I asked at my local Tesco Express information counter, and was told that Tesco will not accept even one token intended for books in exchange for general groceries; not sure if this is a new policy made in response to recent events, or if this was an individual store's policy.

I have just received two promo packs containing bookmarks, pens, rubbers etc.. a great freebie which I will distribute amongst my children and their friends. I also do 'bookcrossing' where you leave a book in a public place for someone to pick up, take home and read, so the bookmarks will come in handy to put in those to promote reading amongst adults.:rotfl: :A

This is a nice idea - perhaps you could write the web address for printing off your own quick read token on the cover of the book.

I've just been into Tesco and brought (amongst my groceries) 3 x quick reads.
I used the self-scan till and when the supervisor saw my leaflets, she gave me a moderate hard time until I produced the 3 books out of my shopping bag.

They are on the look out as people have been using the tokens but not buying the books!:naughty:

Thank you for sticking up for this co. They have been ever so good with their freebies.

I hated the thought that they would have to pay the likes of Tescos, when they redeem the vouchers, because Tescos will redeem the vouchers from the company.

I doubt it will be Tesco that loses out!!!!!

I am giving the freebies to my kids school friends and we have put the leaflets on our counter for customers to take.

I have kept some for myself as I am an avid reader.

Just go to www.bookcrossing.com and register. Whenever you have finished reading a book you simply enter its ibn number onto the site and it will give you a unique bookcrossing id number which you write in the book along with the web address you then leave it in a public place for someone else to find and hopefully that person will then register it at the site and you can track its journey! I usually leave a post it note with all the info on the front of the book as well as having written inside.

MSE'r kindly sent me some (loads!!) of Quick Read vouchers which I am keen to exchange for some good "reads" at Tescos today. Is there a sign up showing which books I can use the vouchers against? How much do they usually cost? Is there a big selection? Is there a limit to how many you can buy (with vouchers)? I would like to get a couple of extra to share/donate, etc.

Just went to a big Tescos and could find no "quick reads" :(

I will try some books shops - and maybe even ask someone!!! ;) hehehehe

We've just had a letter at work asking for school equipment for a school in Ghana and so I've donated the pens, pencils, rubbers and bookmarks that I got in my pack, so if anyone's looking for a home for any of their extras, PM me for my address.

Thanks

I have to admit, if you read the first thread where you applied for this, most people were and have used these in tescos, and posted that, so why is everyone having a go at this person??

Im so grateful to the OP who posted the freebie, and she knows it!!

I wont be selling on ebay

Thank heavens somebody on this thread is more interested in being honest than spouting how holier than thou they are.

I couldn't agree more, I use the vouchers in Tesco, I use the the pens and pencils etc at school for my pupils. I get so bored with all the finger pointing and trying to seem better than others on here. Surely you are all old enough to see that different people have different opinions and points of view, whats the point in having a go at each other about it, gawd!!!!

The point is you are ripping off a registered charity i.e. NIACE (National Institute for Adult Continuing Education). Why should they pay for your groceries? Think about it...

Afraid I have to agree, no harm in using some to get money off your shopping, but having 600????? and you dont even have a Tescos or Asda near you?? why apply for that many in the first place if your not intending to use them on books?? No offence meant, but it means other people who genuinely want to use them for the purpose intended probably missed out, and your 600 dont actually sound like there much use to you!

And waitrose do accept them, someone on another thread used some recently :)
