Okay.. in an attempt to ditch Coca Cola I'm turning to sparkly flavoured water as an alternative, I've just looked and the one I've been drinking has sweetners.. is this a good alternative or not??
I've weaned myself from full fat coke, to diet/caffine free and from 2+ litres a day to 3 cans but I just need to get off the stuff! I don't like any hot drinks and I'm really fussy with Squashes and Juices so I'm hoping this water is a good alternative!!!

Well done for ditching the coke. It is evil stuff, cocktail of chemicals and unfortunately, the diet version is worse. Personally I wouldn't touch anything that uses saccharin, aspartame or acelsefame K as there are loads of bad tales about them. The government insist they are safe but I don't believe rumours like these start from nothing.
Debate from House of Commons about the use of artificial sweeteners from 14th Dec 05: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmhansrd/cm051214/halltext/51214h05.htm
It's up to you to make your own mind up really. Read up info and weigh the pros and cons.

Also be aware that any fizzy drink, including fizzy water, is fizzy because Carbon Dioxide has been dissolved into the water. This produces and acidic solution and an acidic drink when drunk with any degree of frequency will errode your tooth enamel.
I realise that there are scare stories about artificial sweeteners that may or may not be true, but 'natural' sweeteners like sugar, glucose, syrup, honey etc DO cause tooth decay, and when overused lead to obesity and heart disease. So they are far from 'safe' too.
The thing to live by is 'everything in moderation'.
2+ litres of any drink other than filtered water per day would harm you in some way.
Well done for recognising the problem and doing something about it, but don't just replace one obsessional behavior with another.

Thanks for your help Guys! Yes this drink as aspartame in! Typical! Okay.. well maybe I'll wean myself on to the flavoured water and then still flavoured water... it's just so easy to buy a tin of pop without thinking!!
I agreed I have to be very carefull not to replace one bad behaviour for another.. which is easier said then done!!!

What about something like Tesco organic coke? I must admit though, i tastes NOTHING like coke, I thought it resembled ginger beer?
Seriously though, there is nothing nutritious in fizzy drinks and they are bad for your teeth and can contribute to ulcers and digestive problems and encourage diabetes and obesity etc etc. What about some real fruit squash like Tesco Hi-Juice? The ingredients in that are pretty good. Just remember to have things in moderation and drink lots of water in ADDITION and you'll be fine.:T

Do they still make soda stream? just fizz up your own water and put Lemon juice in it (NOT lemon squash) - YUM. fizzy but will still rot your teeth coz the lemon will make it acidic. could then wean yourself on to fizzy water.
Aspartame gives me migraine. I had to decline a free sample of ADEZ (some bloody 'healthy' juice/soya drink) coz it had something that I couldn't pronounce in it as a sweetner. WHY??

because aspartame is cheaper as it is about 100x sweeter than sugar so they only need a tiny bit. Acelsafame K and Aspartame are virtaully the same thing, just different companies make them. It does annoy me when they put in in kiddie drinks and then claim that it is "healthy".

I once bought a bottle of sparkly flavoured water from a garage as a mistake, thinking it was just water. I spat it out in disgust. Anyway, as a first step it's OK, but the acquired taste of pure water is where you want to get to eventually. When you're really properly thirsty then nothing beats just water.

I completely agree with this. I went through a phase of drinking loads of fizzy drinks in an attempt to lose weight. The acid in the drinks ended up giving me chronic bladder problems (chemical cystisis) which took YEARS to diagnose properly and involved unsuccesful treatment with unpleasant drugs and was only finally cured through homeopathy. All I can say is BEWARE drinking large amounts of carbonated drinks!!!
