Hi,

My Tax runs out end of this month, and MOT on Sunday. Leaving things to the last minute, in my usual style, I have tried today to book an MOT for today or tomorrow.

Not surprisingly, no-one can do it in time. Could someone tell me how long i've got until i get a fine for not having either road tax or SORN?

Thanks

Paul

If your MOT expires on Sunday, it is illegal to use the car on the road and would most probably invalidate your insurance. You can only drive the vehicle to a pre-booked MOT after it has expired.

There is a Kwik-fit Centre in your area that does MOT while you wait....

1B Castle Trading Est, East St, Portchester, its only a couple of miles from Portsmouth...... 023 9237 2279 given them a ring just to make sure but you can just go along without an appointment usually.... good luck

thanks... just tried them, but they can't do until 1st of June. grrr

I wasn't going to carry on driving around after MOT/tax ran out, (other than to any MOT i eventually book), but i just wanted to know how long i've got before i get a red letter from the govt. I'm sure they must give a few weeks leeway??

Why not just tax it today or tomorrow?

I'm a complete idiot - That didn't even cross my mind! I always had it in my head that you needed a new mot to get the tax, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks!!!

Oops, just checked the DVLA website, the MoT needs to be valid on the day the tax disk comes in to force. Sorry for the duff advice.

Sorry that Kwik-fit can't oblige but if you book an MOT with them online you get 20% off the costs.. thats if you can wait of course....

I would sorn it & don't use it ( or risk a penalty)
in most cases you can do it online http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
, and then just tax as soon as passes MOT

thanks a lot payless, I've just SORN'd it - surprisingly quick and easy online.

Fortunately i don't need my car on a daily basis, so can now book a more convenient mot date.

Cheers for all the help

There was no need to SORN it, you dont **HAVE** to tax it before it runs out it can be done 2weeks after with no problem, it can also be done 3 weeks after and even into the 4th week, but leaving it till the 4th week is really pushing your luck. They only chase up cars which exceed 30 days of being untaxed. But you've SORN'ed it now which is fine.
