We have just sold a Toyota Estima due to high fuel consumption. Can anyone recommend an economical mpv or diesel estate? We really want to make the right choice this time. Thanks a lot.

Go for an estate - the extra frontal area and weight of MPVs make them inherently less efficient. Diesel is the way to go. Loads to chose from.

Skoda - very good.

how many seats do you need?

if comparing a 5 seat diesel estate to any of the 7 seater+ mpvs, then the estates will be better for fuel consumption. but if you need more than 5 seats, i wouldnt go for an estate with the extra ones in the boot, as they are totally impractical

Best overall efficiency and deals at the moment - in our opinion - are as follows:

Any of the VW Group of brands (Passat and Octavia diesel engines are good value at the moment), as a price guide a 2.0 TDI Passat estate would be c £18,295

The current Mondeo 130ps diesel estates are mega cheap for a few weeks still (until end June), you can pick up brand new (1st owner deals) LX 130ps 2.0 TDci estates in metallics for £13,910'ish at the moment, or the Zetec version for £14,770, for example.

Honda Accord Tourers are also good value, and the facelifted Avensis pricing is just coming out, ours aren't calculated just yet but there'll be decent pricing on them on most broker websites any day now. Volvo V50 and V70 stock is also at bargain pricing right now as the new '07 model year pricing has just been issued.

If you're going to keep it for a long time and residual value is not an issue for you, think about the Cit' C5 estates - a 2.0 HDI VTR estate comes in at £15,320 at the moment.

On MPV's, value for money include VW Touran's, Citroen C8, new Ford SMax, and Renault Scenics/Espace etc but for luggage carrying...an estate is possibly better.

Go for something with roof bars fitted so you can always add a topbox!

We can supply engine /co2/ fuel consumption help if you need it...or just check out the manuf'rs websites.

Hope this helps.

Having read the thread title I was going to suggest a Toyota Estima...until I read the first post! I've had mine six years and done 100,000 trouble-free miles at 30mpg (which isn't bad for a full-sized MPV).
I take it you're not interested in spending over £10k as that would blow the "economy" argument out of the window. Skoda Octavia could well be the one.
If you regularly need to use a top box then your car is too small. Get a bigger one. The added drag will kill any fuel saving you believe you'll get.

I love peugeot's, and in the past I had a 406 2.2 HDi estate which returned about 45mpg, was HUGE, but so comfortable to drive, and given it's size, a dream to park. Can't recommend peugeot anough.

I've had one for 2 years, and with normal driving I'm getting over 50MPG.
Long motorway runs - and we push 61PMG.

Space is huge, comfort is good, well built, cheap to run and insure.
And if you go for one that's 6 months old from the major car supermarkets - you can pick them up for circa £10K.

Easy to resell too.
