Travel in London - help!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone!!

I'm going to be moving down to London at the end of July to start a placement in Slough and I'm going to be at the mercy of public transport to get around!!
Basically I'm asking for your help to find the cheapest ways of getting around. The journey I will be making most often i.e. mon-fri will be:

A bus ride to Southall Station, a train ride from Southall station to Slough station then possibly a bus ride the other side and back again!!

But i'll want to explore London a bit so will probably be making other journeys but less frequently. I've heard about oyster cards but i'm not sure where it covers and whether it does actually save you money i'm also technically still a student if that makes any difference!!

I'll be really grateful for any help even if you could just suggest alternative routes!

Why don`t you find a place to live in Slough and save all the travel problems?
The people who commute from Slough to London don`t do it for fun - commuting is not the best way to spend 2/3 hours a day if you don`t need to.

I am going to but at first I'm going to stay with my grandparents because it'll be free instead of up to £500 a month!! unless the travel costs will be that much it'll be worth the commute!

I imagine that you're commuting won't be too bad as most people will be travelling towards London rather than away from it. Hope it all works out well.
