You won't want to be playing games on a laptop anyway - unless you want to fry eggs on it ;)
Even my current Toshiba laptop plays games.

Acer Aspire One A150L / Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz / 1GB / 120GB / 8.9" / Linux / NetBook / Blue (LU.S050A.074)
£159.99 Free Delivery
from Play.com, and don't forget the 0.5% cashback at Quidco. This is slightly better than then recent Dixons/Curry offers due to the fact that it's not a refurb and it has 1gb of RAM, whereas the Dixons/Currys offer though cheaper was a refurb with just 512mb of RAM.

am looking for a fast and reliable alternative to my macbook used for my business.
is this a potential solution?
I thought I would start this one of myself. !I have deliberately picked the old high street knee trembler PC World, as I know posting from such a shop (i know, don't spit) will goad all techies into finding a better deal within a millisecond to ensure it isn't the current running.
While 1 Gb is no longer super fast, it is more than adequate for most people looking for office functions and to surf the web. !
OK so that's my ultra quick starter for ten. !Come on MoneySavers smash it....

Oh my, im so confused. I have read all of the last twenty pages and still dont know which laptop to buy. I need a laptop which I can use the internet, send emails, watch DVDs, store lots of photos, do lots of stuff on Excel and use accounting type software. I only really use it at home.
I found this horrible pink and black thing on ebuyer.com but I really have no idea if it would be any good or if I could buy something better for less. The options seem to be endless and the specs mean nothing to me.
From reading your posts 2GB of RAM seems to be the minimum one ought to go for if you want to be able to do anything remotely complicated on there. Apart from that i'm stuck.
Is this any good and can I buy a better one for less?

I have a dell laptop which has packed in and I found that buying replacement batteries and leads was so prohibitively expensive that it has put me off Dell. Im sure I would ignore that hatred if they had the best laptop though.....

Jennie I do sympathize I found the same problem when I bought ours. Thing is you can go by all the advice in the world but there will always be differing opinions to listen to. I think you should probably go with the best spec for the amount of money you can spend stating the obvious I know. My nephew bought a dell from tesco and is thrilled with it, we have bought, in the past, a packard bell that was brilliant , a hp which is brilliant , a hp compaq which hubby thinks is fab and I hate and an advent which is actually very good on the sly!Lots of things differ to make the performance better I mean for instance the type of broadband you get , how fast it is, also we use google chrome on all our laptops now instead of ie and find it freezes far less than before. All minor things I know. Also we are beware of any ready installed anti virus programes on a very kind 90 day trial as they are utter s**t and you can't get them off your damn puter for love nor money these are all things that make your puter run slower than normal I am certainly no expert and I am prob wrong about a few details and I am sure I will be shot down in flames very soon ! Good luck in choosing fwiw! The only thing I will say is that we bought ours from Mr T and they were very good when something went wrong we had a replacement immediately.

No that one is rubbish for the cash! I certainly wouldn't spend any less on a laptop, vista needs a good cpu and lots of ram to run propally or it will be annoyingly slow! I would spend a little more and go for:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164845 or for an extra £60 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158885 which has a better cpu, webcam and massive 500 gig hard drive. Perfect for all your photo's! :-)

You are spot on with that advice. I get fed up with all the pointless "free trial" software they stick on new pc's. Acer and Dell are the worst culprets. If I wanted bloody Macaffee anti virus I would go and buy it, but I wouldnt cos its rubbish and it can be a pain in the a**e to get shot of the free trial because it won't uninstall propally unless you have some proper removal software. Im looking for the best processor available, 4GB memory and high quality screen. Grpahics and hard drive memory do not matter to much. My budget is £500 although £600 tops.
I dont know which processor to go for, so confusing as to which is the best when they are the same Ghz.
This is my cheaper back up at the minute http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158885
However I have also found this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158885 with a better processor, is it worth the difference, does anyone know of any better specs for the same price of £549 or under? I cant find any.
What do people think?

Dell Precision M4400 Laptop with the following specification:
2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo (T9600) Processor
4Gb Memory (1 x 4Gb)
250Gb Hard Drive
FX1700M 512Mb Graphics Card
Screen is 15.4 WXGA 1280 x 800
Wireless
Bluetooth
SD Card Slot
Integrated 0.3 Mega Pixel Camera
Fingerprint reader
Would this be worth paying the extra, I mean how big of a difference is there between, T9600 and the T6400 etc?

I think thats the highest intel dual core possible cpu for laptops. The difference is 0.7Ghz between the T6400 and T9600.
Is it worth it? Well depends on what you need all that extra power for? Are you a gamer or use a lot of video or photo editing software? Then the extra graphics and cpu power would come in handy. The Acer with the T6400 is no slowpoke itself though! Personally I would save myself £200 and get the Acer. The other looks a very high spec but not worth the extra cash in my opinion. Oh... and its a Dell.http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon13.gif

I just want something that will last me really, its going to be a toss up between the two as I cant find anything in between. I like to run a lot of applications at once so the more powerful the better. The only thing I dont really know what I am looking for is the screen, what sort of resolution for hd should i be looking for and will anything else affect this, eg qraphics card or motherboard? What is WXGA?
Surely Dell is better than acer isnt it? I kind of like the idea of finger print recognition too!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_XGA can explain it better than me!
The finger print thing is basically a novelty security thing and can be a little hit and miss, either works or annoyingly doesn't!
As for Dell vs Acer lets just say that out of every 10 call outs I get to fix a dodgy computer problem, 8 of them are made by Dell. Some people still swear by them though. I just swear at them! http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon10.gif Still, you pays your money and takes your choice.

I agree that Sony has a good reputation but in my experience that reputation slightly exceeds the reality. They aren't bad but they are quite some way from the pinnacle of quality that everyone thinks Sony are, and subsequently pay an unnecessary premium for.
Personally I've had no problem with Dell at all but everyones experience is different. For example Toshiba are second in the poll at the top of the page but my last laptop was a Tosh (and not a cheap one) and it was terrible - numerous hardware and build quality issues.

I too thought badly of Acer until I went into a large John Lewis where by far the majority of the laptops were Acer and I made comment.
The assistant, who seemed quite clued up, said that these days Acers were good, JL wouldn't sell them otherwise?
So does that mean new spec Acer's are in fact OK?:o

Obviously you can get cheaper models with poorer powered cpu's, less ram, etc but in my opinion it would be a false saving as Windows Vista needs a decent cpu and lots of RAM to run propally. The above, although by all means a budget laptop still is still a very good spec and pretty futureproof (not that I use that team lightly as far as computer technology goes!). :D

Whats the best price you experts can find for something like this:
Processer dual core, ideally core 2 duo.
Ram at least 2gig, 3 gig is better, 4 gig better still.
DVD-RW
Decent graphics card that (so it will play most non-cutting edge games, such as world of warcraft, call of duty 4, doom 3, etc on reasonable settings)
Hard drive at least 160gig
Either Svideo or HDMI video output.
Not bothered what operating software it comes with, i can install my own.
I was wondering if it can be done for £450 ish?
Thanks!

Just be aware that, as well as most of their stock, is cheap due to minor (supposedly cosmetic) damage.

That is a netbook (ie a shrunk down lower powered laptop designed mainly for internet browsing and portability). If you are looking specifically for a laptop then that is not the right choice. But then you didn't say what you wish to use it for.

I just presumed that it was a laptop! TBH, I don't even know the difference - my knowledge of computer hardware is not so great, sadly.
i am looking for a laptop (or notebook?!) that can:
boot up relatively fast, and works relatively fast on the internet and to load up programs -not looking for the speed of lightening just that it doesnt take 5 mins to boot up like my stupid Vista-addled computer does.
That can work without Vista - I hate it!!
Will be using it for my PGCE starting in September
That can play films - is everything in HD now?
A relatively good sized screen
-what else would one do with a laptop? - mind gone blank!

Can anyone offer me advice on which laptop to get, I currently use an Acer Aspire 2920 with 160 HD, 2GB Memory..
I'm looking into getting a new one & would prefer to stay clear of Acer as I'm not keen on the build quality.
I only really use it for browsing the internet but quite often have lots of tabs open so need something thats going to be able to cope with that without slowing down too much..
I don't really wanna go over £350 but could possibly go upto £450 if its a good deal.
Thanks

My son has saved up £270 and is looking to buy himself a laptop, he wants to use it for school work, surfing the internet and he also plays online games ie runescape etc, obviously for that kind of money it won't be all singing all dancing but im sure there is something out there. A 15" screen would probably be the smallest we would like to go. I was wondering if anyone out there has seen any decent deals around.
Many thanks in advance

Copied off another post I've just made (complete thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=23115037&posted=1#post23115037)):
*****Option 1*****
If they're not bothering about gaming how about this:
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0054505&s=dhs (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS15451&l=en&m_30=136643&oc=N0054505&rbc=N0054505&s=dhs)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T6500 (2.1GHz, 800MHz, 2MB)
3GB RAM
250GB HDD
£398.99
*****Option 2*****
A slightly cheaper version of the above (the only noticable differences are this one has a 15.4inch compared to the above 15.6 screen but is £10 cheaper):
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0715217&s=bsd (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&kc=N4X15202&l=en&m_30=143259&oc=N0715217&rbc=N0715217&s=bsd)
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6570 (2.1GHz, 800MHz FSB,2MB L2 cache)
3GB RAM
250GB HDD
£389.00
*****Option 3*****
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0053503&s=dhs (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS15354&l=en&m_30=111789&oc=N0053503&rbc=N0053503&s=dhs)
If they are bothered about gaming then here's the above with a proper graphics card and more RAM:
Intel® Pentium® Processor T4200 (2.0GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache) (Marginally worse than the above, shouldn't be noticeable)
4GB RAM (Better than the above)
320GB HDD (Better than the above)
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570 (Better than the above)
£499.00
*****Option 4*****
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0715207&s=bsd (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&kc=N4X15203&l=en&m_30=143259&oc=N0715207&rbc=N0715207&s=bsd)
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB,3MB L2 cache) (Better than all of the above)
4GB RAM (Better than the first two, same as the third)
320GB HDD (Better than the first two, same as the third)
256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 9300M GS Graphic Card (Better than the first two, worse than the third)
£499.00
If you can afford it I'd go for Option 4 if they're not a gamer or option 3 if they are.

You will probally find that it is the running programs in the startup menu that are slowing your computer down or lack of RAM or decent CPU rather than Vista. I have always got on well with Vista but can see it would be slow on a pc that isn't really built to cope with it. What system score do you get overall and individually for mainly CPU and RAM. It makes me sad to see people unnecessarily replacing their computers or blaming the OS for something that could be fixed cheaply and easily with a RAM upgrade and a tweek of the unnecessary start up programs.

Hi Chili,
I've gone through the start up programs, and all unnecessary ones are gone, so it stresses me out rather. Not buying a new computer to replace this anyway, just getting a laptop to use for uni.
I've found these two - budget is about £350. What do people think?

Download the latest drivers for your graphics card may help and make sure all display settings are on their highest. Use windows defender to stop any unnesscery programs from starting. As for the dvd's try vlc player again. You might also have a faulty screen or graphics card... I did warn you about the Dell!! http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon12.gif

I had vlc player but the pic appeared a little grainy but i dont know why. I thought this was a high end pc so dont know why the pic is not of a high standardThe DVD pic on a PC is never quite up to the standard of a decent TV (apart from anything you generally don't watch a TV from one or two feet away). If it's only very slightly grainy it's probably normal, normally if the laptop is struggling it will be stuttery rather than just grainy but by all means try updating graphics drivers and/or other players. Personally I use KMPlayer for all vid and audio playback but I don't think the player will make a huge difference (try anyway).
I did warn you about the Dell!! http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon12.gifI don't see what help, or relevance in this matter, that is.

This is a better spec for £339.99 with free cloud wi fi and laptop bag or £357.99 with a two year warranty +extras: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164844 has better CPU but not a lot between the two but if you go for the john lewis one I would stick an extra gig of RAM in it. It has a very slow processor which might be a pain. Can't comment on Vista Basic because I use premium but I imagine it is less resource hungry. The CPU wouldn't have much if any impact on the battery life as the newer ones like these have all sorts of power saving functions so when the pc is idle so are they. If you want to save the battery turn down the screen brightness to minumum and turn off the wi fi or blutooth when your not using it. Hope this helps? http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon7.gif

Does the laptops come with the Vista disc or pre-installed as I may want to put XP on it.
This varies from supplier to supplier, vista would be preinstalled but you usually have the option of making a full backup or "rescue disc" to reinstall it if there is not a spare OS disc supplied.

I think it is a decent spec for the money, but I can decide whether to pay for the 4 year warranty. I guess it will give my 4 years of peace of mind, and by thenit will be time for a upgrade anyway. Just wanted to get peoples thoughts.

I couldn't really make out the link you added, it just went to a build your own dell laptop thing but if you were talking about one of the standard builds with no added extras and an extended 4 year warranty for just under £500? I think this is a very bad spec for the price. You would be paying most of the money for the warranty alone and Dell can be notoriously difficult in honoring it should something go wrong. This is a better spec and £100 cheaper: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149938
Use a little of it to add accidental damage and loss cover to you home insurance. Much cheaper, and dont forget you will still be covered by the Statutory 12 month warranty should anything else go wrong with it. http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon14.gif

I've used Dell for many years now - that's several of my own and about 30 purchased for other users.
They sell good value machines at the basic spec price.
I usually try and wait for discounts and/or free delivery.
I've had a couple of problems over the years - and in each case the warranty procedures were better than expected - including a next day engineer when I'd only got collect and return warranty.
The independent surveys of reliability usually put Dell high upon their lists.
My only gripes relate to the technical support - expensive phone calls to call centres outside the UK - but that's common to many other makes.

Hey thats good to hear. I've nothing personal against them, but you can find a much better spec pc for cheaper these days. If your happy with them then to stick to it. The last time I phoned them on behalf of a customer to buy a laptop they were very agressive and rude because I refused to buy the rip off extended guarentee. Maybe they have improved over the years. I'm just fed up having to repair them all the time, then again... it keeps me in business! http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon10.gif

For what its worth, I just bought a Compaq CQ60-320SA from Currys.
Looking for my first laptop, need usual windows programs, fast speed processor cos I'm impatient and a decent size hard-drive for my photos, (I'm very snap-happy!). Guy in the store was really patient and helped me understand all the various pieces that make up the spec - best of all the laptop retails I visited by far:
AMD Turion Dual-Core processor RM72
(2.10GHz, 1MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:showEditorial%28%27Genuine-Windows%27%29;)
4GB memory
250GB hard drive
NVidia GeForce 8200M graphics
15.6" HD widescreen display
Webcam
Wireless enabled
Get free Windows 7 upgrade when its launched in October, I just pay the P&P.
£429.99 for laptop + £108.00 for Windows programs, Norton security and installation. £29.99 for back-up disc. I also took the £7.99 per month Whatever Happens coverage - which for £60 a year is only a tad more than my home insurance excess - and covers all accidental damage, e.g. spilling coffee on it! Good for peace of mind...
Oh and got a free mouse thrown in too!
Was really leaning towards a Dell until got to Currys....small thing really but liked that the Compaq has a proper number pad on the keyboard (unlike the Dell) which is great for all the spreadsheets I have to keep track of my expenditure and SOA...
IMPORTANT NOTE: This might be obvious to you Techs out there, but it wasnt until the 6th shop of the day that someone spelt out that NO LAPTOPS COME WITH SOFTWARE - you have to purchase Word, Excel, etc separately which could add another £60-100 onto the total price.

My home insurance covers all accidental damage for a tiny amount a year, I think your being ripped off a little? http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon9.gif

Hi everyone.
I recently heard about a deal with T-mobile where you get a free laptop & internet access on a 2 year contract for £30/month. Do you know if the laptop's any good & if it's the best deal out? I'm with Virgin broadband for about £17.50 a month at the moment so seems to be worth doing.
Thank you.

In my searches, mobile broadband dongles seem to be the cheapest way to go for internet access, but not necessarily the fastest speeds or most reliable connection...
In all of the deals I saw that claim you get a "free laptop" you actually end up spending more over the term of the contract, than if you purchase the laptop up front and just pay for the mobile broadband as/when required.
Obviously, if you havent got the cash up front, then this allows you to spread the cost, but overall you do spend more.
If it's of any use to anyone, Ebuyer are still doing this HP 550 laptop for £379.99:

Excellent spec for the money. I'm looking for a laptop for £400 or less so if anyone has any better suggestions, please post them!
Spec for the above:

1.80 GHz

Don't worry about that. The intel centrino is just a laptop version of their cpu's. Its still a core 2 duo. If in doubt just go to control panel/system to check what cpu is installled.
I found a slightly better spec for £399.00: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149938
not a lot in it but slightly better cpu, bigger screen, and full size keyboard.

dont think you'll get the windows 7 upgrade if it came from dell outlet. I rang dell last week about this and they said outlet computers arnt eligible. Got my inspiron today and double checked by submitting the service tag, and its not eligible. I bought mine from the home outlet site so there could be a different policy with the business site of course.
Sportbilly
22-07-2009, 8:35 PM
Yeah, looks like there's a different policy as it's definitely eligible and said as such during the config.
The business machines look better value than the home ones- a better processor, a 7200 rpm drive and a dedicated graphics card for about the same price as an Inspiron. Presumably it's ugly as sin though...

I am searching for a sub £300 laptop for my mother and am in need of some reccomendations if anyone has any?
It will literally just be used for searching the net and needs office for occasional Spreadsheet and word processor use and I would like it to have a cd/dvd drive.
As it needs office and a optical drive im pressuming a netbook is out of the question?
I have found several pc's online for sub £300 but many are celeron which many are saying will run slowly with Vista?
Can anyone recoommend any suitable products?
Cheaper the better really!

I would go for an samsung NC10 that have come down to £270 at Dixons, and if you really need an optical drive then go for this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167565 £31.99
If you are going to to put office on I would say to go for an older less power resorce one or put another 1gb of ram in the netbook.

Hi
Apols for the laziness of this post, i currently have a 10 month old crazy child who i can't take my eyes off, so i've just jumped on here while he has a nap....
Basically, i'm pretty good with software knowledge, but rubbish with hardware knowledge, so need a bit of help.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 at the moment, but due to separation from my husband, i need to buy a new one for myself. I haggled to get this one and ended up (over a period of a few weeks of them continuously phoning me back, and me sticking to my guns) getting a pretty good deal... trouble is, i can't remember what i asked for or anything! I've had a Toshiba in the past and that had no end of troubles so don't think i'd touch that brand again.
I don't really have any money at all for a budget, but i'm considering a 0% credit card for the first time in my life and asking for money from relatives for my birthday in a few months to get it paid off, so ideally i don't wanna pay over £350.
I only really use my laptop for internet activities. I use the web a lot, i aquire and watch films on it, and most importantly, i transfer and store thousands and thousands of pictures and home video (baby related obssession!).
Basically my requirements are:
decent amount of memory
decent battery life (i have a 9 cell now)
integrated Bluetooth
XP (not Vista)
and a built in webcam (for Skype) would be handy but not essential.
Budget is £350 ish, but would prefer much less if poss
There's a great one on the Dell site at the moment (Inspiron 15) on special offer with 3GB Memory & 250GB Hard Drive for £349, but when i add the extras i want on it ends up at £430 which i can't justify :(
Can anyone help?
Thanks :)

The sub £300 laptops usually have a very small screen - not much good if it's going to be his primary comuter at uni. I would strongly recommend the HP 550 - it's around your £400 mark, the specs are good and the service from HP is excellent. Try using a cashback site to get some money off as well.
DO NOT go for the free laptop & mobile broadband. If your son is in halls he will have broadband access (99% of halls of residence do these days) and if he's sharing a house they would be well advised to get a braodband package they can all contribute towards. The mobile broadband contracts will tie him in for a period of time that means he would end up paying more than he would if he just bought the laptop, and he is not guaranteed reception.
When you choose a laptop think how he would use it - if he's going to be writing assignments and doing research then a mini laptop with small keyboard and tiny screen won't suffice. If it really is just for uni work and not gmes etc then he won;t need fantastic specifications, just enough to run his Office package etc.
And finally, in terms of software, Microsoft do MS Office 2007 Student edition for around £45, or OpenOffice is free, or a dodgy copy of MS Office is also free (just don't get caught!).
Hope that helps

also, never buy a fujitsu. They always overheat, i left mine on my bed for 10 minutes and it over heated. It might have been a little silly but i think it is still not good enough. If you can get a 2nd hand lenovo or a cheap one go for it!! Last ages!

That is all dependent on the individual laptop really, one model may suffer overheating and every other may be fine, so wouldn't write off a manufacturer based on one laptop. I had a Tosh that suffered terrible overheating yet they are second from top in the poll at the top of the page.

is there any major difference between the ASUS Eee PC 904HD BK003X and the Acer Aspire One A150?
am thinking about going for the asus as it has a 2 year warrenty (as a used display item) and the acer only has 90 days (as a refurbished) any thoughts on this?

Ok, need some help. I have been planning to get a new laptop to replace my old one. I am not that expert with computers, so help is appreciated!
My budget is around 300-400, the less the better, of course. Its for basic net surfing, and office works. Some photos and some songs. Not much for gamings etc.
Any suggested laptops? I have been looking at Toshiba or the HP 550 as recommended here. Also, what is the minimum processor level that should I get? Been thinking about around 120GB, is that a good amount? Anything else that I should pay in attention when getting one? How about the RAM?
Help is much appreciated! ;)

Look at Sainsburys current in store offers. They have a good spec Toshiba and also a Compaq both under £400.
Sorry can't remember the exact spec of either.
If you can't get to a store, post back and I'll take a note when in my local Sainsburys tomorrow.
Here is the link to their online store:

The two I saw are featured end of third row down and beginning of 4th row.
Hope this helps.:p

here's the spec for the Compaq CQ60-313SA 15.6in 2.1GHz Laptop
This medium-sized laptop from Compaq offers an amazing set of features for the price. Great for users who want a more computer on a smaller budget. This model boasts a 15.6-inch screen and a fast, dual core processor, in addition to a range of other features.
The 15.6-inch widescreen (1366x768) is brilliant for seeing everything you need to, and is also great for watching movies. The 2.1GHz AMD Athlon" X2 Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs is fast enough to run most programs quickly, while the 3GB of memory will let you run many more powerful programs, or watch downloaded content more smoothly.
The 160GB hard drive is big enough for lots of programs, music files and videos. The optical drive reads and writes DVDs and CDs, and is also a LightScribe drive, which lets you print directly onto LightScribe DVDs or CDs with silkscreen quality. Just burn the disc, eject it, flip it upside down, put it back, and LightScribe does the rest. Messy labels are a thing of the past.
An integrated SD/MMC/xD and Sony Memory Stick reader takes care of a range of different media reading, while three USB 2.0 ports take care of the rest. A VGA port, LAN connector, telephone plug and headphone and microphone jacks are also built in. It even has HDMI out, so you can play HD content onto an HDTV.
The unit has a built-in modem, so even if you're not in Wi-Fi range, or close to a LAN cable, you can connect by simply plugging into a phone cable.
Altec Lansing® speakers give great stereo sound, while a built-in microphone and webcam let you chat or video conference wherever you are. All this in a notebook weighing less than 3kg, and for such good value, is an amazing deal.
Comes with Windows Vista Home Basic installed.

Toshiba Satellite L300-1FS 15.4 Inch 160GB Laptop Black
Toshiba's Satellite L300-1FS is a great mid-point between price and performance. The laptop still delivers a range of features normally only found on higher end models, and offers respectable computing power. With a large, high resolution 15.4in widescreen (1280x800), this portable laptop has Toshiba's TruBrite technology for enhanced viewing.
The pacy Intel Dual Core, 2.16GHz chip keeps computing quick, while the 2GB of memory is enough for most computing tasks such as web browsing, document and spreadsheet creation, and playing multimedia. The 160GB hard drive gives you enough space for all your programs, and leaves plenty of extra space extra for media if you want to watch movies during your commute.
The laptop also features a full range of extras, such as WiFi and LAN to connect to networks or the internet, a VGA port for an external monitor, microphone and headphone jacks. Great for travel it also has an internal modem so you can connect to the internet through a phone line - ideal for access to email in regions with no broadband or WiFi. Also has a useful number of USB ports (three).
Integrated speakers let you watch movies, or listen to music on the go, while the integrated webcam and microphone let you chat online or video conference without needing a headset.
Another bonus is the DVD-RW drive, that also works on DVD double-layer discs, so you can back up huge amounts of data (about 8GB) to one disc.
Comes with Windows Vista Home Basic installed, and a one year guarantee applies.

Today bought a Toshiba from Morrisons for £299.00. 2GB memory, but they only had 6 in stock and it was first come, first served. Looks very good and have been pootling about with it, but haven't got Wifi yet so can't access the world wide web - need a router. Only problem so far is that it won't let me type the '@' symbol, no matter what I try. Anyone got any ideas please?

Sounds strange. Does the key press down (nothing stuck under it)? Does the key itself actually work, ie does just pressing it give the main key symbol, usually the apostrophe, but pressing shift and the key not give the @ symbol?
You could try reinstalling keyboard drivers, but failing all that you may (and I stress may) just have been unlucky and got a faulty keyboard.

pressing shift and 2 ... if that works you are using a US keyboard.. change to UK
can’t get the “@” key to work when typing out an email address.Providing that particular key is not physically broken or stuck then the most common reason for not getting an @ symbol when you hit that key and possibly getting a ” instead is because of your keyboard input or language settings.
In Vista, go to Start – Control Panel – Regional and Language Options and choose Keyboards and Languages then Change Keyboards. In Installed Services, click Add and choose the input language and keyboard layout for your location. Save your keyboard settings as a default.
Just make sure you are using a the english lanquage with your keyboard!!

It may be set up as an american keyboard. Try pressing SHIFT 2 as this is where the @ symbol is on their layout. If it is you can go into your keyboard settings and set it up for UK.

I am looking to replace my laptop and have about £300-£400 to spend. I have read through a bit of this thread and HP550's seem to come out as a good buy.
I just use my laptop at home for internet and some excel/word stuff. We have a networked hard drive at home for all our pics and music so don't need to store that much stuff on it. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on what spec would be best for me. Is it always best to buy the biggest spec you can afford?
Thanks

Anyone else have an opinion on this please?
Biggest bargain i've seen in a looong time is that Medion from Aldi.
Them specs for that price is unheard of, especially with 3 year warranty.
They're good at keeping their word too. My nan has a telly from them and if anything goes wrong they're out the next day!

Medion looks good but it's just the name putting me off. Also thinking about Dell, I think they do some really good deals but it's just the name that I'm not sure of. Don't know whether to go for their XPS M1530. Like the spec but not the fact that it's a Dell! :D

Medion are not a bad brand and their customer service has been winning awards for the last few years. Out of all the laptops I have seen in the last 3 years of being a self employed techie, I've only seen one faulty Medion, and that was because of a cup of coffee was spilt on the keyboard. Not much I could do, but Medion repaired it for £48 outside of its first year warranty...

Have you tried entering only the first 7 digits? Or the last 7 digits?
Ebuyer have an own brand laptop which has really good ratings, So far at the time of writing there are 18 5* star ratings which is the highest rating possible. Link and spec below. I hope it helps someone out.
I have found Ebuyer consistently the cheapest place to buy things and their own brand stuff very competent.
Go to Ebuyer and search for product 167514. I would link to it but as a new user I am not allowed to.

Aren't there any laptops with a "matt screen".
All these clear bright garbage and true view junk are like mirrors, awful.
Also with Windows 7 around the corner I'd hang fire on buying any laptop at present.

Please can someone help - Am looking at the dell outlet site for a new laptop and if I understand correctly I can use the System Identifier number to check its back ground - but when I look of the system configuration page/ service tag thingy it needs a 7 digit number - and I have a 8 digit number - please can anyone help.....!!! - even if its to tell me I'm doing it wrong lol!!!
I can only assume the system identifier is not the same as the service tag as the service tag should be seven digits, I have a dell and its seven digits, only other identifying number on mine is the express service code which is 11 digits. Although I'm not aware the service tag can be used in that way (to check a systems history), though I'm not familiar with the outlet site so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah well, you might want to take a look at ebuyer website. They've got a load of HP 550's with different specs and it appears you get a years free WiFi through Cloud if you buy an HP 550 through them.:p
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164845
I have been looking at these on ebuyer as want to get my daughter her first laptop for xmas, but I don't know if they have a built in wifi capability ready to go without signing up for this free cloud thing. I don't want or need the cloud thing as she will have use of our internet through router at home and same at school. Can I use these laptops for wifi with home router without the cloud or will they only work with cloud?

But as it's a refurb it only comes with a 90 day waranty, as this would be an xmas gift I am worried what if it doesn't work when they unwrap it or goes wrong within a few months. Anyone know if it would be worth thaking the risk.

The free wifi through cloud is a facility you do not have to use. So the answer to your question is YES they do have a built in WIFi capability and just ignore 'cloud' if you don't want to use it. It is mainly of use if out and about and wanting free WiFi.:p

Looking for some advice please. Have read thru' some of the thread and getting more confused. Went to curry's and PC world today to look at laptops with my mum. We are both pretty clueless but the assistants seemed to be quite good. Mum is looking to surf the net, emails, and other basic stuff. There was a packard bell which was reduced to 299 and the software package brought it up to just under 400, it seems to be everything she would need. Is this a reasonable deal?
PS what is vista? - heard it mentioned on here
thanks

Hi, you didn't mention the model or spec of the laptop currys recommended but if its this one: http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0617046529.125086429 7@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladeidgdejedcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&fm=2&sm=0&tm=0&sku=291082&category_oid=-34014
Its a piece of crap for the price. I would stay away from currys and pc world, they tend to only reccomend things that make them the most commission and pc world tend to get aggressive if you refuse the "optional" software (that you won't need) or extended guarentee.
I would buy from one of the better pc online retailers.
This is a good buy for a laptop : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164844
But if you only really need it for web surfing and emails then I would go for a netbook (scaled down laptop) like a samsung NC10.
Try shopping around at Ebuyer above, and there are other good sites around like www.laptopsdirect.co.uk (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk) and www.dabs.com (http://www.dabs.com)
Vista is the soon to be replaced operating system on the laptop like windows XP before it.
It is changing soon to Windows 7 but some laptop deals give a free upgrade to this when released. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I would give it 6 months to a year for them to iron out the bugs in it first. I have been using an evaluation copy of it and its not that different to vista.

Hi!
I'm looking to buy a quick and reliable laptop to last me through 4 years of university and i've been told by friends that the Sony Vaio range is a pretty good one. I have my eye on the Sony Vaio NW11Z/T model which on ebuyer.com is £804.19 but on BT Shop is £780.83. As a newbie, i can't post links but is there something missing from the BT Shop specification to make it this price? Is there somewhere else I could get it cheaper? If you think i'd be better off with a totally different laptop, please let me know as i'm not too techno-savvy! Thanks :)

which are good makes?
is it wise to buy a used one?
what software and security does she need to get started? and is this separate?
She already has wireless connection for an old PC she has never used - so would be wanting to use this

Hey there,
The Sony does indeed look like a nice laptop but you are paying extra for the name. You have to ask yourself do you really need a blu-ray player? And are you going to use it to play high spec games on? No, then you can do without the posh graphics card. If you do need all that stuff then you can still find a more powerful laptop for less money.
However, if I was you and had £800 to invest in a laptop for uni you could be smart and buy 2 for less!
No, i'm not crazy. Hear me out.
Firstly this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168884 at £449.94 has the same CPU and RAM as the Sony but smaller hard drive (still 250gb so big enough). This is a good powerful "leave at home" laptop to use for typing up work in the evening and watching films, music etc.
Then a nice little light netbook with a good 8 hour battery life to carry around with you to work on (laptops are heavy!), on a daily basis: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150183 Samsung NC10 at £288.86(shop around for cheaper) (MS Office works fine on it) and you can keep your work on it synced with your main laptop using the brilliant (and free) dropbox @ www.getdropbox.com (http://www.getdropbox.com)
Lastly a good back up drive will protect all you hard work music, photo's and films: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140807 at £47.99 (again shop around for best price).
Total cost £786.79. See, two laptops and a back up drive for the same cost as the Sony. http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/icons/icon7.gif

Hmmm, one persons "good make" is another persons poor one! Personally Any company you have heard of is a good place to start. Acer, HP,Toshiba, Sony, Compaq and Fujitsu Siemens are good in my view. I hate Dell and Advent.
I would stay away from buying a used one if you don't know what your looking for. You could end up getting ripped off!
This one isn't bad and has a 15.4" screen so a good view: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164844
HP 550 Laptop, Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 1.8GHz, 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM, 15.4" BrightView TFT, DVD±RW Lightscribe Writer, Bluetooth, SD Card Slot, Vista Home Premium, Office Ready (60 day trial or 25 uses)*Free Cloud Wi-Fi* at £349.98
As for software, I would immeadiatly uninstall all the "free trial" software you get on a new laptop. If its only for surfing and emails get a free anvirus program at www.download.com (http://www.download.com) like AVG FREE or AVIRA. If you need word processing software you will need to get Microsoft Office which costs around £50-60 for the basic version or buy a secondhand copy from somewhere (make sure it has a valid licence key). Or again you can get a totally free office software suite at www.openoffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org) If you shop around there is very little software you have to pay for but only download it from a trusted source like download.com.
All new laptops have a wi-fi (wireless) card built into them so that would be fine to use with your existing router.

I personally wouldn't reccommend it. It only has a old style Celeron CPU which can run hot. And also only Vista basic the cheapskates! The newer Core 2 duo CPU's like in the HP are much better and are also more energy effecient. As for the Amazon deal I wouldn't go for anything with less than 2gb of RAM as Vista won't run propelly. I also don't know a lot about Emachines, good or bad!
As a rule of thumb, set yourself a spending limit (Say £350-£400) and then look for the best spec you can find for the cash. CPU: Intel core 2 duo T**** (the higher the number, the more powerful the processor).
Then, the amount of RAM. Again the higher the better. Min 2Gb.
Harddrive space would vary depending how generous the manufacturer is usually ranges from 120gb to 500gb for that sort of cost.
Everything else comes as pretty much standard. Usually Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. A DVD/CD recorder, Webcam, Wi-fi and memory card reader. Anything else on top of this see as a bonus.
You also have to be careful with the model numbers as the makers will release different spec laptops under the same model code so make sure the details match up. If a deal looks to good to be true, it usually is!

Hi there.
What Laptop magazine which I buy from time to time thinks the Toshiba Satellite L300 series (entry level model) is one of the best around the £300 mark. You'll get a slowish processor, although it's still better than those ones in little netbooks, 2Gb RAM needed for Vista and a smallish, by today's standards, 160 Gb hard drive. But it gives you full laptop power meaning it will run full screen video (unlike many similarly priced netbooks and the like) for £310 (+£10 delivery). And much better than anything from emachines. You might find some new L300s cheaper if you do a search.

Hi,
This is going to sound really thick, I'm looking for a laptop for work, which is mainly at home, but need to escape from the kids to a quiet room. I will need wireless connection, which I think I have through Orange Livebox? I think that I will need at least 2Gb to run some of the software I have to use and MS office etc. My question is, what is the difference between Gb Ram and Gb Hard drive. It seems that laptops have small i.e. 1-8 Gb Ram but much larger Gb Hard drive. Will I need say 4 Gb Ram to run these software programs or will a Reasonably large Gb Hard drive suffice.
Sorry to be such a technophobe, but I don't want to go into PC World and show my ignorance and end up with something that does not suit my needs.

Its not a silly question if you don't know!
A lot of people can get confused between the size of the RAM (Random-access memory) and the size of the hard drive.
I've seen many people go to throw their computer out because it has become almost unusably slow and when I sugest a simple RAM upgrade to speed things up they tell me that there is plenty of space left in the hard drive!
Basically, the RAM is a volatile type of memory which will store all your running programs and processes while the pc is running. Once the power is switched off all infomation is lost.
This is why a pc with little RAM will peform slowly because when it runs out of physical RAM it will use the hard drive as "virtual RAM" which slows it even more!
The hard drive is just a vessel that holds the operating system and all your other programs, documents and media. This differs from RAM as the information is not lost when the power is switched off.
I would say that a minumum of 2gb of RAM is sufficent to run Vista and your programs unless you have any heavy duty editing software. You can add usually up to 4gb depending on your laptop but Vista will only reconize 3gb on the 32bit version. Get the biggest hard drive you can for your cash, but an external USB hard drive could be added easily if you have a lot of photo's and music. Good to backup on as well.
Lastly, please DONT go to PC World. They have a very agressive sales technique and will try and sell you a hundred things you don't need.
Try looking at these computer online specialists and you won't go wrong: www.ebuyer.com (http://www.ebuyer.com) www.dabs.com (http://www.dabs.com) and www.laptopsdirect.co.uk (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk)

Aldi do a decent budget one.
£499
http://www.rboffers.com/computers/16-multimedia-notebook-499-aldi-26463.html/
Core 2 duo T6500, 4gb ram, 320gb HD, geforce GT220M, 8 cell battery
More budget ones...
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/GRADE_A1_-_Acer_Aspire_6530G_Laptop_A1-LX.AUS0X.142/version.asp
Acer do a few decent ones for under £600 too,
http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_5536G_638744.html
http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_7735G_645491.html
or higher end (£800 +)
http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_8930G_638742.html
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asp/versions.asp?rewrite=MSI_GT729-253BK-E_Laptop_GT729-253BK-E&pagetype=version&page=
There are hundreds of other choices too. Value for money, the aldi one at the top is pretty good. Graphics chipset around performance of a geforce 9600.
I would avoid laptops with full HD screens and anything less than a real top of the range card as you will not be able to play in that native resolution, and graphics may look stretched when trying a lower resolution. For a laptop capable of gaming at full HD resolution on latest games, you would need to spend upwards of £900, like the MIS one in the last (£1279)

Seems a pretty good deal to me and will be more than adequate for your needs. Could get better spec for less £££ but then this is a Lenovo so will be better built than most.

Thanks Jaydee,
I think im gonna be looking at the later reccomendations what does everyone think of the dell Dell Studio XPS 16 ? that is currently on offer ?
I really like the look of the Dell Alienware M17x :D but i can't realy justify the cost
thanks Mark
What Laptop magazine rates Dell Studio & Studio XPS laptops very highly. I think you'll be fine with the XPS 16 but if you up the spec from the default £749 it starts to get expensive quickly.

That's pretty good. I've said elsewhere that What Laptop magazine rates the L300 series. I note that Tesco is offering a cheaper version of the model - L300-2DR. It's got a much weaker celeron processor so may have better battery life but most other things should be similar - £298.

I can get a Lenovo N500 PDC 4GB 320GB DVDRW VHP with the following spec for £384 through my companies discount scheme, I am being told its a cracking deal???
My daughter already has a Lenovo and likes it... tempted but would like a more informed opinion please....

As jaydee says, Lenovo make good solid business machines. They bought IBM's PC division. The N500 entry level machines are only £375 and have features which aren't standard with other laptops in the range such as built in bluetooth, decent webcam and good 4-5 hour battery life. They don't skimp on features. They always do well in reviews. I was looking at one for myself!

Looking for a laptop with around 17" screen for my sister. Max price £400. My 12 year old nephew will use it for surfing etc while the family will use it for watching movies via DVD etc so it need not be fancy.
Thanks
17" screens for £400 is tricky but there are some. There's the Compaq CQ70-220EM at PC World. It's low spec even for the price band and Vista Basic is mean but it should do the job for you at £350.
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/009906
If you dropped the screen size down to 15-16 then a whole range of decent laptop become available in the £350-£400 price range.
This one from emachines is pretty decent spec wise for the money - £391 - 17.3" Intel Dual Core T4200, 2 Gb RAM, 250 Hard drive but the laptop may not be built to the same standard as a Compaq or an Acer or a Toshiba.

Hope that helps.

Having just accidently smashed the screen of my year-old Compaq (well, stepping on it), I need to get a new laptop, yet don't have masses to spend. I would say I am looking at spending £300 max.
I'm looking for something around the 15" mark (or better), Windows Vista Home Premium or XP (I'd rather not Home Basic), 2GB ram (consider 1GB if the price is good enough), 160GB hard drive minimum, and an ok-ish graphics card (I know that anything around this price will be low end, so I guess I'm looking for the best of a bad bunch). Also, in regards to prosessor, I would very much prefer a dual-core processor, not a single core.
Am I asking too much for less than £300 or should I be able to find something at this?
EDIT: Just come across this refurbish Medion for £270.

I'm informed that a "Core 2 Duo" processor is superior to a dual-core, although I don't understand why exactly.
I've been looking at the Dell Inspiron 1545 with an Intel Celeron Dual Core T3000 processor, one laptop has 4GB Ram and 160Gb hard drive whilst the other has 2GB Ram and 250 GB hard drive, can anyone advise which would be better? as the title says - I'm considering buying a laptop (my first, I'm downsizing my house to a caravan and need the space) and could do with some advice.
The machine will need to have a card reader and be eligible for the window7 upgrade
It'll be primarily used to run CS2 and surfing - but I do tend to run several applications at once - I've a poor attention span
here's a couple I've been considering
Acer Aspire 5536-643G
Compaq Presario CQ60-420SA
I'll consider all possibilities - am trying to future proof as much as possible

Depends on your needs. If you need lots of hard drive space for downloaded movies and music go for the bigger hard drive (and have the option of upgrading the RAM yourself if needed in future). If you don't need the HD space go for the 4GB RAM one and have the resultant improved performance (and have the option of buying an external hard drive for storing stuff on if you need more space in future)

If you're starting with the lowest spec system from £349, then try and bump up the processor to the most that you can afford then you should be quids in. Didn't realise they were starting the Inspiron 17 at such a low price. That's not too bad.

I'm informed that a "Core 2 Duo" processor is superior to a dual-core, although I don't understand why exactly.
Let's start with processors. Intel's older dual core processor is two separate processors working together. The newer Core 2 Duo chip has the two processors (or cores as they are known) together on the same piece of silicon. Therefore communication between the two cores is much quicker. The Core 2 Quad processor is essentially a linked pair of Core 2 Duo chips. Core i7 chips have four cores all on the same piece of silicon, which is why they're the fastest chips of all.
The Medion laptop that you've identified has a reasonable spec for the money. You could get that new plus more spec for another £100 though.

I'd get the Acer for its 3 hour battery life alone. I'd also take a look at the Lenovo N500 which is referred to a page or two back in this thread. Take a look at the Toshibas under £400 as well.
But I guess if you're doing photo editing and running multiple applications then you want as powerful processor as you can get in a laptop under £400. That's likely to be Intel T6400 Core 2 Duo or T5750 C2D.

I was going to get a refurb as guided by my son who works in IT but as he now isn't speaking to me I'm lost.
Decided I'd better get a new laptop instead hoping for not much more than £300.00. Just need for office - word, ecxel etc . WIFI already included so don't have to faff around like my old one with dongle and installing it etc. Also hoping for on board dvd player at least so can watch one if stuck on lousy plane or whatever. I need it pretty light as will be mainly used whilst travelling out of the UK to keep in touch re bookings etc for my small business. Have always stuck with XP on home office PC but everything seems to be coming up as Vista so a bit woried about that.
I've come down to 2.
One lots of HD but vista basic and never heard of the make. The other much less HD but free upgrade to Windows 7 and Toshiba. Don't really want screen any bigger than these.
Can anyone advise me? Or suggest something else?
grateful for any replies. I'm getting a headache having been scrutinising this screen for the best part of last 3 days.

Without any response I'm leaning towards the Toshiba, It seems Vista is the operating system to go anyway but the HD capacity on this looks kind of weedy, Would that really matter for what I want to use it for?
I realise I'm looking to spend very little but I'm not exactly roling in it so if any of you knowledgeable persons wouldn't mind sparing 5 minutes of youe super multi megawhtist moments I'd be grateful.
If not I daresay it would be uttely dreadful if all your fingers fell off and you had to operate your fabidoozy machine with your ever so snooty noses.

Definitely the Toshiba IMO. Has the best spec and 120Gb hard drive is plenty unless you'll be downloading lots of video clips, movies, music etc (mine has 120Gb HD and only actually using 40Gb of that)

Thanks very much. I'd pretty much decided to follow your advice although I liked the included fre upgrade to windows 7 with the Toshiba.
I see some laptops have built in web cams and would like to set up skype ( sp?) so I can see and talk whilst away. Is it easy enough to just buy one and install as they're small enough? I just saw this one doesn't have one included. Sorry if these questions seem dumb . I really have fallen way behind on what can be done these days.:o

I agree with you about this in terms of the spec and the price. The only downside is that it does not come with a free or nearly free upgrade to windows 7.0 when its launched in Oct.
I'm just wondering whether after Windows 7.0 is launched all these Vista machines will end up with large discounts to clear stocks.
I actually ended up buying one of these from Aldi! . I really think having a 3 year guarantee on a laptop is worth having.

Hello, I'm looking for a laptop. Budget is £500-£600. Less if possible.
I'm looking at one with an Intel Core 2 duo processor with the number at least t/p 6000 or more. At least 2 ghz.
At least 3gb ram and 256mb dedicated graphics.
Decent wireless n card. Vista premium/ultimate. At least 300 gb hard drive SATA.
Prefer it if it is available with interest free optional. Screen size doesn't matter.
I've found some from Laptops direct. I've heard that they're not any good.
Thanks

I agree this laptop has a pretty good spec but as it doesn't come with free Win 7 upgrade I was wondering how much it would cost to upgrade, any ideas?
Also as it comes with 2GB ram is this sufficient to run Vista 32 bit or would it be better to upgrade to 4Gb ram?
Thanks in advance, some of these days I'll actually make a decsion on which laptop to buy!!

I have been looking around for a laptop for the past month and have been to every site I can think of. Just in case I missed something I thought i'd ask you guys first. The laptop has to have a gpu equivalent or better than the radeon 4650m.
The best deal i've found so far is from pcspecialist and it give you 4gb ddr3 ram, core 2 duo 2.0 ghz processor and a 4650 gpu for £550 if you customize it yourself and don't select an operating system.
I will probably opt for the above system shortly unless any of you out there know of any cheaper options.
It seems that it's hard to find any decent cheap laptops in the UK that are able to play games yet the US is flooded with them. I was tempted to import one but I don't fancy sending it back if it has a fault.
I appreciate any help you can offer.
Jaffa.

*Sigh* Me too. I think an upgrade from what I've seen is going to be roughly £70.00 so the Toshibas I've looked at offering it as included as free update for laptops at or just above £300.00 seem the best option . However there's a belief /rumour/train of thought / speculation doing the rounds that all the Vista laptops will dramatically fall/plummet in price once Windows 7 is launched due about end of October, Which leaves me personally in a complete mess because I'm leaving UK about mid October and must have working set up I understand with all my stuff loaded by then. Argghhhh!!!!!

Many thanks Mandark, laptop technology is an enigma to me, processors, discrete cards, memory (ddr2, ddr3) and all the hype leaves my head spinning - when I was a lad :-) it used to be AMD or intel - wasn't life simple. anyway the Lenovo looks very interesting and I'm now off to look at Toshibas.
BTW do you know of any machines that have T5750 or T6400 processors in my price range and what difference do these numbers make in actual speed - would I notice the difference?

Hey guys,
I'm after a laptop but don't really know what I'm looking for. I'll be using it for watching videos online, downloading music, listening to music on Spotify, using iPlayer and generally browsing the internet quite heavily, as well as watching DVDs. I'll also need it for the usual word processing/spreadsheet use etc.
I have a budget of up to £500 but would obviously like to spend less if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not an expert,. but the one I've bought was £399 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N0054504&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756) with Core 2 Duo T6500 DDR2. I don't have a clue what these things mean, but do know that its a fast processor, being in high end cpu list on cpubenchmark (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core2+Duo+T6500+%40+2.10G Hz). Still have no clue what DDR is! I do know thought that the 4Gb ram is great and the 250Gb is more than adequate for my needs!
This one was also recommended (http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0537279411.125234804 8@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdadeiemkejhmcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&category_oid=&sku=392917&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null) on one of the previous techie threads, and is currently in stock, but they apparently go quickly if you'd like one. At £390 (+ quidco) with core 2 duo T5800,4 Gb ram, 500Gb hard drive, I guess it isn't hard to see why!

I can get the Dell Inspiron 15 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=DOD&l=en&oc=N0054508&rbc=N0054508&s=dhs) with:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6500
4096MB RAM
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330
500GB (5400RPM) Serial ATA Hard Drive
6-cell battery
For £455.03 delivered, plus I get £19 via either quidco or topcashback. Is that reasonable?

What is quidco/topcashback and is there any money involved on my side?

Quidco (https://www.quidco.com/) and Top CashBack (http://www.topcashback.co.uk/) are both cashback websites. There's no charge to join or use the service, although Quidco deducts £5 from your earnings every year as an admin charge. Although it's always worth checking before you go through with the transaction, Top CashBack generally matches the cashback offered by Quidco for each merchant and doesn't charge this annual fee.

No problem happychappy. I think there's little difference in performance between the lower end processors unless they're at their limit it's 3D gaming or video editing.

I think the custom Dells are good at the low end. You can get a lot of power for your money.

Just bought this (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N0054504&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756) Dell Inspiron 1545
Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM, 250 GB, free upgrade to windows 7, £399 inc shipping and VAT. Offer ends tomorrow. Quidco 5% too.
Anyone know if this is new or refurbished? Also have spent hours, days, weeks looking for a budget laptop/netbook and my head is spinning.:rotfl:
Son won't have a landline and need internet access, so what must I look out for? Just barely got to grips with speed and memory!!!!

Okay, thanks. It's unlikely that I'll use the laptop for gaming, but I will use it quite heavily for most other processes so I want a fast machine. Do you think that I need the dedicated graphics card? If not, for £40 less I can get the Inspiron 1545. The 1545 also has a 250GB HDD rather than 500GB, but I don't think I really need 500GB anyway. So it's mainly a question of whether it's worth spending the extra £40 for the graphics.

Word of Warning: This 'Free' upgrade to Windows 7 might actually not be free. Make sure you read the small print or FAQ's on shipping/pricing of the different manufacturers.
I spotted Toshiba are charging £27.90 costs, for the 'free' Windows 7 Upgrade.
In regards to the Laptops, that Dell someone linked to, Dell 1545 with the Intel T6500 Core 2 duo is an excellent price at £399 IMO. I haven't seen that decent processor, that cheap anywhere.
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N0054504&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756
However just remember it does not have a webcam or Dedicated graphics if you require them and the 4 cell battery does not last that long so keep that in mind.
You can upgrade it, however if you need to upgrade more than one thing then it might be better to go for the £479 one as it then becomes a better buy which has a..Webcam, dedicated graphics, bigger hardrive(500gb instead of 250gb), bigger capacity battery(6 cell), Wireless 'n'
If you spec the £399 one to the £479 spec then it costs about £588;) Obviously it all depends if you need the extra stuff.

not surprising that the acer was sold out - have found these three at laptops direct (am not allowed to post links as I'm a newbie), so I'd appreciate it if you could pass your expert? eye over these three.

I'm looking for a laptop for university, therefore will be mainly using it for the internet, downloading and listening to music, storing photos and microsoft office, I dont want anything fancy, just something quite cheap but reliable.
What are people's opinions on the 'Toshiba L300-2DR M900 2GB 250GB 15.4" Laptop' from Tesco, it is £319 I think, apologies for not being able to post a link
Alternatively I was considering the Dell Inspiron 15, as I don't really want to spend over £350
Thanks for any help I may receive :)

Highly recommend it.

any ideas on a good price for this laptop
AMD Phenom/Intel i5 processor, with 4GB/8GB DDR3 RAM and probably 1GB graphic card
prices seem to be about 800 but 600 is nearer my budget

We're thinking of getting a laptop to replace the monstrous old tower hubby has had for the last umpteen years.
As we're not in any urgent rush though, is it generally better to wait until Christmas/New Year to buy this sort of thing? Are there liable to be better deals on? I'm also wondering if it's better to wait until after Windows 7 is released so that whatever we buy already has it on and we won't have to faff around with obtaining and installing upgrades...
Any thoughts?

Am tempted with this. Except I hate AMD. But its a 2.1GHz CPU so its not going to be TOO slow... And with £5.60 off with Quidco...
