Hi Everyone,
Now that Apple has just launched new versions of their laptops, does anyone know what outlets are discounting the previous models (of MacBook Pro specifically)?
Cheers.

it might be worthwhile comparing the new macbook with the old macbook pro. You might find that the new macbook is faster and cheaper than the old pro even after a discount??

Just a thought.

BluRay disc drive

versus

Pros:

Personally I'd choose the second, getting more for your money as RAM can be quickly and cheaply upgraded so apart from that the only real advantage the first has is a BluRay disc drive and are you really likely to be watching BluRay films on your laptop.

hi folks

I'm looking for a decent gaming laptop but can't spend too much.

I've been looking at the Acer Aspire 4920 Gemstone Laptop

http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_4920_Gemstone_Laptop_LX.AKU0X.063/version.asp

but it's a bit on the expensive side for my budget.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hate to burst your bubble but that laptop is not a decent gaming laptop and if thats too expensive for your budget then you aren't gonna be getting a decent gaming laptop. You'll need to add at least another £100 to get close.

The second laptop in the post above yours is one of the cheapest games capable laptops I've seen lately (£449), though may still struggle slightly with the more intensive modern games.

Yeah 2GB is fine and as I said its usually easy, and cheap, enough to upgrade in future if needs be.

For future reference you can make ordering the right type of RAM easy by using the memory scanner at Crucial which will pick for you exactly the right memory for the computer it is run on:

Do you mean that if I put the laptop model number in this website it will pick the correct upgraded memory for it? How easy is it to fit?
Does it make it confusing that there are different version of the Acer 5920g on the market?

Take a spare battery/external charger and when you are able to get a mains supply charge both your laptop and spare batteries up at the same time!!

I would recommend that you always take the battery out when it is charged and use the mains wherever possible (with the battery out - except when charging) to make sure your battery lasts as long as possible.

My husband and I both had the same laptop and he didn't bother to take his out much and I took mine out all the time and used the mains a lot. His battery only lasted 6 months and mine is just starting to show signs that it is isn't lasting as long after 18 months.

You can enter the details in the dropdowns, that way you can check the prices before you buy the laptop (to save time I've just entered the laptop details for you, click THIS LINK (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Aspire%205920G) to see the results).
Or you can run the scanner tool on the laptop when you get it by clicking on where it says "Scan my system" on the Crucial home page.

Memory is easy too fit, in fact crucial normally send instructions and advice on how to fit it with the memory you order. On most laptops it's usually just a case of unscrewing a small panel on the bottom, unclipping and sliding out the old memory them slotting in the new.

And no it doesn't really confuse matters with all the variations of that laptop as they will probably all use the exact the same type of memory anyway.

But, although more RAM is never a bad thing, you probably don't need to worry as 2GB is a perfectly reasonable amount (the maximum you can use is 4GB anyway) :)

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop - I have a HP 530 Notebook PC that my parents bought. I'm applying to enter uni Sept/Oct 2009 and want it to last for the 3/4 year course and then some so that I don't feel the need to upgrade again before I can afford to. Will my current laptop be sufficient? 1015 MB RAM, Intel Celeron M 520 @ 1.60 GHz, Windows Vista Basic. If not, the focus points of the upgrade would be speed and battery life. Maybe a switch to XP, or Linux if it's easy enough to use.

Also, my friend (not a user of MSE) is looking to buy a laptop for uni to last even longer (medicine student). Her budget's about £900 at the maximum, any better suggestions?

General laptop recommendations would be great, since we'll be buying in May-July.

Both those have only 1GB RAM and microsoft vista basic

For about the same money you can get an Acer Aspire with with 2GB memory and Vista Home. (Gives a much more enjoyable experince with Vista) Look at the earlier posts or go to amazon.co.uk

I'm looking for a £300ish laptop for my 14yr old - wants it for GCSE coursework etc, playing Sims, communicating with friends on MSN and Bebo.

I've been looking at Acer 5920 - seems just what I'm looking for and it has an integrated webcam. However this webcam is only 0.3 megapixel - would this be any good?

Also seen Toshiba Equium (with AMD Turion processor) in PC World with 1.3 megapixel webcam although at £449 this is a little more than I wanted to pay. Does anyone think prices will come down between now and Christmas?

From what I have read on here and researched myself most laptops struggle with games unless they have a separate graphics card which can mean they cost loads. I went for the ACER 5920g which I know will probably still struggle with a lot of games but it does have a separate graphics card (the g means gaming)

I am looking for a laptop for a family member. Looking for a basic spec, 2gig+ of ram and a reasonable processor. Only thing it really must have are a built in webcam and mic as it will be used for Skype a lot.

What do you think of this HP on ebuyer:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149335

4gig of RAM, integrated graphics (although reviews say it is a lot better than the normal X3100 chips you get). Only thing I am not sure about is the AMD processors, not ever really had a laptop with one - anyone have any better suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm after a fairly basic spec laptop:

Intel Core 2 Duo processor;
2Gb RAM
160Gb hard drive
17 inch screen
Intergrated Web Cam

...however the main thing is that is that it should have very long battery life. (it's going to be used at clients houses for around 4 hours where I can't really ask to recharge the battery)

Budget is around £600, although obviously the lower the better.
I'd stick to the reliable manufacturers i.e. Sony, Toshiba, Acer etc as i'm buying this on behalf of someone else.

I have found this one http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/5817056/Sony-Vaio-AR71-J-Pentium-Dual-Core-T2370-1-73GHz-3GB-200GB-17-DVD-SM-Vista-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html
but its seems to be pretty over-specced for what I require, and just over the £600 budget.

Does anyone have any recomendations, or ideas on how I can find out which laptops have a good battery life? I've been searching google for the past hour without much luck.

Thanks in advance.

As this thread is huge I apologize if someone has posted the same.
Ebay hosts 2 major computer manufactuers factory outlets. HP and Dell.
Search for 'hp_marketplace_uk' and 'dellfactoryoutlet' (try searching product description if you dont find them straight away)
They sell off three types
reconditioned/refurbished - been found faulty and returned = now perfect
Old stock - Lines no longer produced/replaced by newer model
Overstock - Ordered more than they think they can sell

There are fantastic bargains to be had

I just bought a new desktop HP Pavilion a6355
8800ghz Phenom quad core processor clockable to 9600ghz
3GB Ram
500gb sata hard drive
Nvidia GT8500 graphics card
Dual layer DVD burner with lightscribe
Windows Vista home Premium
80gb pocket media drive
Media keyboard and a mouse

Auction number 380073460357

All that for £272 + £5 postage (yep - £5 to post a whole desktop system)

Last year I bought a widescreen laptop, 4ghz P4, 120gb hard drive, DVD rewriter, 128mb graphics card, wireless, bluetooth - £232 again from HP

Also check out 3M outlet (3mselect) for stationary supplies on ebay (the scotchtape people)

My favourite seach for a real bargain on ebay is to search for the word 'outlet'

Try 'brother_uk' for printers and 'canon_uk1' - cameras and photo printers

Worried about refurbished - they come as new, unmarked, and have been through the quality assurance twice

The other criteria was a cheap price because at the time prices were falling. Does anyone have suggestions to match this criteria please ?

It will do fine for what you require it for but personally I wouldn't buy a single core laptop. Applications are going to grow increasingly dual core dependant and you could probably get similar spec with dual core processor for similar money (£300-350) anyway.

The bad news is that looking for a laptop with long battery life and a 17 inch screen is a bit of an ask, unfortunately.

The good news is that Dell have released some laptops with ridiculously long battery life (http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/08/12/new-dell-latitude-notebooks_3A00_-no-more-business-as-usual.aspx), if you're willing to sacrifice a couple of inches of screen size:

www.dell.co.uk/latitude (http://www.dell.co.uk/latitude)

There are quite a few options on screen size, not sure how closely the spec matches your requirements though.

I want a laptop for my son, he has started at senior school and in need of one for homework, internet etc
On a couple of pages back this laptop was talked about http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_4920_Gemstone_Laptop_LX.AKU0X.063/version.asp

which I thought would do him.
I checked with Dell today and they have http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS15252&l=en&m_30=136643&oc=N1152503&rbc=N1152503&s=dhs

it is priced at £398 with the extra webcam which I know he would like.
The acer is almost £50 cheaper, is the Dell worth the extra money? I don't know much about acer computers, what do you think?

I want a laptop for my son, he has started at senior school and in need of one for homework, internet etc
On a couple of pages back this laptop was talked about http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_4920_Gemstone_Laptop_LX.AKU0X.063/version.asp

which I thought would do him.

:money:

Thank you for this helpful post, I have just bought a laptop

But building a PC isn't exactly easy...! My other half is doing a Computer Science degree and he couldn't, for love nor money, get his to work. Even the local repair shop couldn't sort it out. It could easily turn out more expensive!;)

It's not hard to build a pc, just might take some time to research what bits are compatible. I'm sure there is enough info on the web to help.

But this thread is about laptops, a PC maybe cheaper to buy, but will cost more in electricity!

Anyone know anywhere that sells laptops without Microsoft operating systems - preferably pre-loaded with linux but empty is fine. Ideally around the £300 mark

Really don't see the point in paying for a huge insecure OS that is slow and eats hard drive and memory when I all I want is
Office Apps - Open Office is free, good and fast (and opens saves in MS if required)
Email - Thunderbird, free, good and fast
Browsing - Firefox free, good and fast

There's loads of lappys for around £300, if they've got XP/vista just wipe it and use linux if that's what u want, or dual boot it?
Or was it more about making a point about linux vs MS?

Anyways, I've gone for the Acer dual core 2.2ghz from Tesco, £330 after a £9 voucher and quidco, plus 1050 club card points.

My parents are buying my son a laptop for Christmas as we got rid of his very old desktop. He does some work online on various websites, a lot of web browsing and is really keen to start playing Sims2 as a friend has it and he would also like to be able to play his Flight Simulator game as even my 12 month old Dell desktop won't play it, neither would his old desktop or obviously my Macbook.

He needs something with at least 2gb RAM, something that will be fast for web browsing so he can complete his online work quickly and something capable of play Sims2, Flight Simulator, Nancy Drew pc games etc. He isn't interested in shot em up or war games etc.

Budget is pretty much anything up to £600 ish but obviously the less spent the better.

Any suggestions welcome as the games thing is driving me mad, I never expected his 2 year old games not to work on my 1 year old expensive Dell desktop!

Games depend on the graphics card that is fitted to a computer. The more powerful graphics card the more expensive the computer. If you need a computer to play modern games you will pay a lot more for a laptop than you would for a desktop computer. You might find it is cheaper to upgrade your Dell Desktop and get a laptop for homework and the Internet!

Can't quote exact laptop prices but this auction company seem to sell a lot of laptops...they specialise in electrical retail stock, though sell some vehicles, apparently they were featured on a BBC documentary about the credit crunch recently:

www.johnpye.co.uk

I went a while back and I'd advise anyone going to their auctions to properly inspect the goods beforehand; some are almost like new in the box, while others are unboxed and look more like spares without software and don't power up. You can test each unit, they don't have any guarantees but they seem pretty cheap. Since I've been they seem to be selling more laptops.

On that budget, your best bet would be a netbook - very small, but designed with internet in mind :)

Asus EEE PC - £180ish
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Eee-PC-4G-Widescreen/dp/B00109V054/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226598515&sr=8-4

Acer Aspire One - £180

These are the lower end models in their respective ranges - but they will suffice for internet browsing :) The Acer has a model priced at £220 on Amazon that has 1GB of RAM, which is a bit better for internet browsing, IMO.

A laptop and a notebook are the same thing, they started to discourage calling them laptops when the specs started to improve and as a result they produced more heat causing overheating for laptops and your lap if used just on your lap (they usually require some airflow to the underneath).

A netbook on the other hand is completely different - it's designed for just web browsing and word processing etc and are therefore smaller, lower spec, usually no hard drive (so no good for saving movies/music etc on) and no cd/dvd drive. Oh and they often have the Linux operating system instead of Windows to save on some of that small hard drive space and bring the price down (as you're not paying for Windows)

Hi,

This is my first visit.

Am interested in the HP G60 114EA and saw it online on HP's own site and Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/G60-114EA-15-6-inch-Laptop-Intel-Pentium/dp/B001H9O20W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226739937&sr=8-1.

At £399 for 3072 RAM and 160gb hard drive seems a good buy especially as HP seem to offer 10% to new customers and 8% cashback from another online site.

Any thoughts????

Hi

I am looking for a laptop which will do the following:

Surf net/dowload burn music/dvd
Do word processing/s.sheets
Chat online
play cd/dvd's

I don't do gaming, so it is only basics really. From things I've read I'm possibly trying to steer away from Acer and anything with 'Celeron', however I'm not sure why! :p For the past 2 years I've had a Fujitsu Siemens Amil Pro and (perhaps it was just a dodgy one) but it had more problems that any laptop I've ever had and it spent all of it's 12 months warranty period going back at to and even then it had problems!

I was really thinking of any Toshiba as I seem to think these have quite a good name but I am open to suggestions. I don't mind refurbs however I want a full 12 month warranty!

I'm looking at as close to the £250 mark as I can however will consider a bit more expensive if I can reduce it with cashback/vouchers/codes.

I know this is a big ask, but I'm really stuck! I just can't decide what is better and hoping someone can come up with something constructive!

Thanks everyone.

i've been looking for a laptop around the £350 mark, to be honest, like most people, i've been wanting a lot more for my money than realistically possible.
just now i came across a laptop that was due for release on play.com in a couple of weeks @ £399 with a pretty good spec.
i did a good old google search and found it @ £379 with free delivery from laskys.com

has anyone bought one of these? or anyone had experience buying from them? or seen it cheaper anywhere else?

I just wondered if anyone can tell me what the minimum technical specifications are that I should be searching for on a laptop. Its for my daughter - 14 - homework, internet etc etc etc. I keep loggin onto the sites that sell laptops but I haven't got a clue what to put into the search boxings  :o - I would be etremely grateful if you can give me some specs to search on...

hope that makes sense...

thanks in advance...

Hello, I just bought a re-conditoned lap-top for £95.00 for ebay, and you have to load the programs like windows etc yourself, its already wifi enabled so I thought it was not too bad a deal, as this was for my 14year old daughter and I think spending ££££ is just daft, if you need more details I will try and get them for you

14” or 15” notebook

For internet / music no games though
Refurbished or new will do as long as it has a 12 month warranty
1 GB Ram

Hi Jack :hello:

Cheers for that, just a couple of things if I may, I'm wondering if the prices will come down any further due to the "Current Sales" taking place right now, any opinion? if I can get it cheaper than £300.00 all the better for me :j

Also, does this (http://www.reevoo.com/browse/product_type/laptop?order=lowest_price) site or this (http://www.reevoo.com/browse/product_type/laptop?order=lowest_price) one have anything cheaper given what I'm after?

Oh, btw, I've never used quidco and I don't have a Tesco clubcard.

10past - effectively, you're looking at dixons/currys/pcworld refurbished machines there...looks like they've had some stocks in and you'll get a dual core processor with 2GB RAM for your £300...or if you can live with a slightly smaller screen, dual core with 1GB from £240...with the 12-month guarantee. I got my Advent lappy from pcworld as a refurb....absolutely fine, no bother, had it for 7 months no issues. Happy hunting :)

Hi all

Been keeping my eye on the prices of sony vaio's dual core for a time. Have just seen that tesco direct are doing a sony core 2 duo for 449

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6446.aspx

not much more expensive than the sony vaio dual core's i've seen.

Can someone more techy than me please reassure me that this is a good deal???

Many thanks

I've just ordered one of these for DS2 (age 14) - the Advent 5301 recon. for £234.95 (hopefully get a few nectar points too). It seems OK for the money, and he'll mainly use it for MSN, surfing and a flight simulator game etc. We've been looking around for a couple of weeks, and decided on this one as we can't really afford to spend more.

RAM is easily upgraded and usually reasonably cheap (around £20-40 for 2GB depending on laptop)

Edit: A quick look on Crucial.com shows 2GB for that laptop is £24.66 (4GB is 43.66)

From what Ive read, not overly sure how much RAM I need, but think 2GB. Can any one advise me on what other spec I need to look for, and even better if anyone can recomend a sub £300 inc delivery laptop. She doesnt want a recon, and would rather a known brand type. I haven't read through the whole thread (for obvious reasons) but if you want a decent specced laptop for £349 you won't go far wrong with this offering from Tesco Direct http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6256.aspx

I bought one a couple of weeks ago for my OH and this is the fourth Acer in the family, we have not had a minutes problem with any of them. If you compare the spec with others at this price point it is an excellent deal. 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 2048 mb RAM (essential for Vista but many have half this) 160GB HD.

For those that have a problem with Acer, this is another deal I considered and is also a good spec for the money although it is a little more.

dont think you'll be able to find another laptop of that power from a reputable 'high street' brand for much less than that price. Its also quite thin and light. on the downside, it's quite basic to look at, but seeing as im the only one looking at it, who cares???

Hi,

Not very computer minded (just had to resubscribe to this website because I can't remember my original login or that for the e-mail account it was registered to) so hope I'm posting this in the right place.

Anyway I need a new DTR laptop. Has anyone seen any good deals on laptops with the following spec's:

17" decent monitor (lots of RAW photo processing)
3-4GB RAM
Dedicated graphics card with 256MB+ memory
2Ghz+ dual processor
HDMI output
(TV tuner and remote control would also be good but not essential)

But most importantly it's got to be a decent and thoroughly reliable model. I'm not good with computers so the less I have to worry about it the better.

I've found this HP reduced to £529 but there are some grumbles in the forums especially about its boot up time:

http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=578f

There is also an ASUS for about the same but I've been told they're a bit cheap and cheerful. The good news is that I have a budget of £600 though would much prefer to spend £500 or even less if I can. Thanks for your time. Zeb.

What you need is really down to what you actually need the laptop for, failing that probably the best rule of thumb is the same as any pc system, get one you can afford with as much memory and as large a HDD as you can get. As for reliability I have had two Toshibas and at least 3 Dells, both makes are still going strong (older ones have been passed on/sold to family) I have to say I do prefer the Toshibas, why? I just think they look better.

I wouldn't touch Acer or Fujitsu, mainly through the fact I have had a few Acer products and two friends have bought Acer laptops (against my advice)each failed around 3-4 month after the warranty period, also my son works in IT and they trialed a laptop and desktop, they binned them after less than six months because of the problems they had with them, and lastly, in my experience their support sucks.

The reason I wouldn't touch fujitsu is because there was a spell (I don't know if it's still the same) where their HDD's were failing just after the warranty period ended (12 months, other HDD manufacturers were giving 24 months warranty) and yes at the time I did purchase 2 Fujitsu HDD's and yes they did fail after the warranty period, one around 14 months, to give the other one it's due it lasted around 19 months before failing.

there has been absolutely no price decrease even though these Discount Supermarkets were selling the same pcs 3 months ago and this supposed to be a serious recession hold off after Christmas?

I work for Aldi and these absolutely flew off the shelves yesterday, so you've no chance of them being reduced.

Mine didn't:(. Made a few calls over the last few days and finally got an email today saying they were out of stock and to call their sales line (an 0844 number) so their advisors can help me choose an alternative product. Yeah, right:rolleyes:.
So it's back to haunting this thread and the hotdeals one and hopefully find something decent for under £300.
Thats sh** that, i have just reading back and you appeared to order yours before me.

Hope you find one soon, im sure there will be deals popping up all over!

Does anyone know the difference in Sony Vaio AW, AR, BZ and FW series? I know their AW series is replacing their AR series.

After months of dithering I am thinking of bying the following tomorrow. They are saving it for me as there is only one and it is £439. Is it a good buy? According to the graph at the top of this section SONY is rated as the best, just above Toshiba.
I like the two year guarantee and many of the other features - thought it had a webcam. Must go check! Interested to hear anyone's comments.

In my opinion, I wouldn't buy it for myself, but then again it is a Sony (VGN-NS10L/S I believe?), so some people will take comfort in that. I wouldn't buy it because I've seen better specs for that price, but 2 years guarantee with the laptop is great

The graphics card is not too good, so I wouldn't expect to play new games at full resolution and detail, the graphics card comes in at 102 in the following link (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html)

I have seen a core 2 duo T5750, 4GB Ram, 250 GB Hard drive, an ATI Radeon 256MB card (not brilliant) and all of the above with only 1 years support though and no Draft N, for the same price, but it's not a Sony, it is an Acer.

I'm thinking of buying an Acer, but I'm just worried about how pants the support is supposedly - once again the internet is making me dither, sometimes too much info is not good. As long as it does all you want to then go for it, but I don't think it's a gaming laptop, but should be quite capable of everything else.

Following on from our disappointment with the Advent 5301 which we ordered (posted earlier in this thread) and then didn't get due to stock issues, have now ordered the Advent 5313 recon. Quite a bit pricier than the other one, but it's got a slightly better spec. and with a discount code and cashbackkings which has tracked OK it's come down to £285 ish. Fingers crossed we'll get it this time!

I'm looking for a laptop for under £300 myself - ideally under £250. I've noticed HP are giving 10% off if you register + they are giving 8% quidco, making it 18% off which is not a bad discount. Just wondering if there's a better deal out there?

If you want a cheap laptop, http://www.bigpockets.co.uk are doing used Dell latitude D610's, which are a good spec, and will out live most laptops on the market today.

I have seen many Sony laptops come and go, all have dead batteries within a year or 2, then the LCD's fade!!

Dell's on the other hand, i have a 5 year old Latitude on its original battery running like new. Been dropped many a time, and it has never missed a beat.

Just my 2p worth!

Hi guys,

I'll need to buy a laptop for use from next summer, but was wondering when the best time to buy might be? I remember Dell having some great deals on this January, and assume that the same will happen next year. However, are there likely to be equally good/better offers next summer? Do you think it would be best for me to wait until then, or just snap up a good deal next month?

Because computer prices have fallen consistently over the years you will always get a better deal 'tomorrow'.
The best thing is to settle on a specification, get current prices, read reviews, post your spec & prices here - then take the plunge!
But if you don't need it for 6 months - then wait at least 4 months - prices will fall.

I am looking for a laptop for my daughter - she will use it mostly for the internet, uploading pictures and videos, and playing and storing her music.

I am looking for something in the region of 2 GB RAM and 160 GB internal memory.

She would love a pink one but my budget is pretty low - £350...or £400 at a push.

Any suggestions or recommendations please?

Oh sorry I wasn't actually replying to your post it was more a general winge that they had put the prices up just before Chrismas. I don't believe the Samsung NC10 meets your criteria it is a netbook as opposed to the laptop you are looking for

Just had alook at the site and most of the laptops are sold out unfortunately.

My father is asking me if this (http://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/?sct=HPG6062EA) is a good laptop to buy for my mother. I'm not very good at knowing what's needed, so could someone check it's ok for me please? She uses it for the internet and word processing mainly. Her old laptop has gone incredibly slow, so as long as it has a little pace she'll be happy.

Many thanks.

Not bad for the price - reasonable memory, small hard drive, processor OK

One thing is getting a laptop another thing is caring for the laptop. If you buy the most expensive laptop in the world and fail to care for it, it will be shortlived.

How do you care for your laptop? (http://www.tellmeonline.net/care-of-your-computer/147/) I think this is an article every owner of a computer and a laptop should read.

Hi, just wondering if you have had any major problems with it, and if you have had to buy more memory for it?

It came with 2GB RAM & 160GB HD so no need to upgrade.
I had a problem when Windows crashed - so I copied all my photos and documents, etc onto my desktop (the drive was readable)

I formatted the HD and then tried to re-install Vista, it failed.
Dell helpdesk assisted me and failed so decided the HD was faulty.
I am on collect and return - but they sent an engineer with a new HD.
The key to re-install Vista was to load the drivers before Vista - I'm not sure if it was the SATA drive or Vista that was the problem.I'm not convinced that the HD was faulty - I'm still using it as an external drive in a caddy (£6 off ebay)

So I did have a problem - but it was probably Vista rather than Dell! Nice laptop to use.

I'm looking at either a Dell Inspiron 1525, with the 4Meg of Ram, or the Toshiba Satellite Pro s300 11g. It will be used for surfing the web, word processing etc.. and not for heavy gaming use, but will be used for simple games, e.g. Luxor. Which would you recommend?

Thanks for the advice.

Had to email Dell over the weekend after finding out the great deal they offered me was beaten by Currys. No advisors at weekend hence email. Delivery was due for the 23rd so wasn't worried about cancelling. Rang to cancel this morning and they say my lappies have been dispatched and if I want to cancel I have to pay £20 + vat on each machine.
Don't really know where I stand but I'm very dissapointed with them as I assumed I could get the best deal by taking the trouble to ring them. How wrong can you be. Waiting for a call from a manager now as the Indian girl I was talking to was like a stuck record so I had to tell her I was not prepared to listen to her repeating over and over again from a script.

The Toshiba L300 -1BW is now £285 at Dixons Direct. You need to use the voucher code "5XMAS" to get it down to that from £299. Hope that helps. The L300-1bw is certainly ok for my parents so they shall order that later on.

Thanks why not a celeron processor?
The Celeron was originally a crippled version of Intel's normal range. Typically with facilities removed or reduced.

If it works OK then fine
If you plan to run processor hungry games or edit video then you'll avoid Celeron.:D that's my opinion :D

Hi all,

Im looking to buy a laptop but dont know much about them.

Im after something for web surfing, downloading, dvd making, light gaming (the odd game every now and again but not high end ones) but also for playing movies so that i can connect it to my TV.

Is there anything you would advise I get? I was looking at these ones but like i say - im not too clued up on laptops.

What was the price difference between Currys and Dell?
Does Dells cancellation fee work out more than the price difference?
It was 17 inch screen and larger hard drive.
No worries though I've shifted the one they sent me today and I'll ring them tomorrow about the one I couldn't cancel because its been despatched but hasn't arrived.
Must be a glutton for punishment ordered 2 more today....had to with the 10% off + 20 pound off + 6% epp + 4% quidco.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I decided to buy the Toshiba L300 1AQ for £349.00 yesterday. Is this a good buy?
I was browsing the Toshiba website as well and read about their extended guarantees but was unsure whether I need to buy the laptop direct to take up the extended warranty, could someone in the know please clarify?

Pixmania are owned by fotovista but DSG International own 75% of this company so that means it is owned by the Currys and Dixons group. They also own PC World.
I got my laptop from ebuyer and had no troubles but there have been some reviews that I have read of bad experiences.

Hi- thanks to everyone who contributes to this thread- its been really helpful to me as I've been thinking of buying a laptop for my daughter's eighteenth birthday/christmas combined. As her birthday is in January I've been a bit torn about whther to wait- my head says yes but I keep thinking of how lame Christmas day will be. And also I guess there is never a perfect time to buy.
Anyway, I've been looking at the dell studio 1737 on pixmania for £389 with a code for £10 and quidco.http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/2203194/art/dell/studio-1737-red.html?i!!!!!3894

I think it looks like a good deal- I was looking at the dell on their outlet site before and it seems to compare quite well...but I wonder if I'm not seeing something that is missing or I should think about? I see its an Intel Dual core not a duo...does that matter? She has an external hard drive as well so storage won't be a problem- it won't surprise you to know that she will use it for school work and also web and watching dvds etc
Here is the spec- its in lots of colours too which she likes.

Looks a good deal to me too, has some dedicated graphics memory which is quite impressive for under £400 and the rest of the spec is reasonable.

Google is your friend. I would avoid them like the plague after reading this:

http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=506811

and from an Amazon discussion HERE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/forum/cd/discussion.html/ref=cm_cd_pg_pg2?ie=UTF8&cdForum=FxJO0Z8VGCDHTM&cdPage=2&cdAnchor=B000VJRU44&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx2189UXPX64ZSH): Just a warning about Comwales from my bitter experience with them. Their website has every thing listed as "available" which implies in stock. This is not true, as I ordered two different products and nine days later still no sign of them. They did not answer my emails. Just about managed to answer my calls, but giving me a different story everytime. In the end I got a refund, but they waisted a lot of my time.I've ordered an item from Comwales, and I'm finding out now (7 days too late) like you say, they don't reply to your email enquiries and nobody seems to want to answer the phone.

I'd be interested to get some comments about the following deal from laptopsdirect.co.uk
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Sony_VAIO_NS10L-S_VGNNS10L-S.CEK/version.asp?PID=734

£420 for a Sony Vaio with T3200 dual core - 3Mb ram/250Gb hd, VIsta, 1.3Megapixel camera, Wireless b,g and draft n.

I'm impressed with the build quality of the Vaio range and this looks a good spec and price. I'm unsure if draft n is worth having or if laptopsdirect are good to deal with? Any comments welcome!!

Merry Xmas to all.
