Yep. If you earn below the threshold to allow you to receive GROSS income, any tax taken from any bank accounts are included and can be reclaimed... even the pennies from the current account.

why do you have to claim back - are the accounts not registered as gross in first place?

My son needs to claim tax back through no fault of his own. Halifax have messed up his accounts. He is a non tax paying student and has filled in R85 but Halifax lost them!

The norm with Halifax is that you do the R85 over the 'phone - and they write confirming you have filed for gross interest. Has the additional benefit - it's more difficult to lose that way!
