i won a car on ebay and done a history check on the car through ebay
and it came back saying it is an insurance write off.
the seller didnt mention this atall in the advert or when i spoke to her on the phone.
the thing is im aware that there are different categories write offs come under but the report didnt state which category the car was written off under.
is there any way to obtain this information?

no idea about the categories but the general concensous is that a car which has been written off in the past is only worth 66% of the market value.

The categories are as follows.

Cat A - Very bad accident, possible loss of life. Car is crushed so it cannot be returned to road or used as parts

Cat B - Serious Accident but ok to be used for parts. Cannot be returned to the road.

Cat C - Repairable but insurer chose not to. Can be returned to the road after a VIC and MOT test.

Cat D - Damaged but insurer chose not to repair. This is often older cars where even small damage means it's not worthwhile to repair or cars that are stolen and the insurer has paid out for the vehicle which is subsequently recovered.

You are well in you right to reject the car and not continue with the purchase, the value will be significantly lower than a comparable car that hasn't been written off.

A full HPI check will give you the details you need but it will cost you.
But why bother? You can either buy a write-off from an apparently dishonest seller or wait for the next auction and get a much better deal.

have you asked the seller ??

Maybe they did not know about it.

If it has been repaired it will have it on the mots.
