View Full Version : Squeaks from front of vehicle

Hi again,

Another query I'm afraid, :p for another (different) mate of mine - he's got a Saab 900 saloon (auto) but we keep hearing a squeaking noise from the front of the car when moving around 20mph or so.

He's solved it by engaging reverse then driving off again but this only stops the squeaks for a little while. It's like the brake pads are touching the disc or something - not sure what. It was quite loud when we were driving uphill.

Any ideas? :o

Could be the "squeal" plate on the brake pads - indicates that the pads need changing. Check that first.

He should take it to any garage, they will check it free in my experience (in the hope that you will give the work to them).

sounds like it could be the 'wheel bearings on the car'.....to be honest, it could be one of many things!

Wheel bearings dont squeak - they drone.

900s are renound for wheel bearings, this gets my vote :)

yeh i agree,
but, my volvo s40 had a squeeling noise, as if two metal discs were spinning on eachother.

Squeak could well be brake pads if it's at low speeds. It's not a serious problem.

Cheers people for those replies - he's coming over later today so I'll ask him to look into the wheel bearings. Only problem is that the local Saab Dealership was/is
a) crap
b) closed down

The nearest is around 40 miles away, unless he takes it to a local place or heaven forbid, Kwik-Fit (I notice a rather heated thread about them on the Vent Board atm! :D)

I'll break the news gently to him that it's probably the wheel bearings, but possibly the brakes, because with that car he's already had a blown cigarette lighter, headlights fuse, Air Conditioning failure and an exhaust that fell off while he was driving  Is the 900 a problematic car or is this guy just plain unlucky?? :rotfl: :o

It's probably not the wheel bearings. They rarely go and if they do then you get droning noises at higher speeds.

its best to find out from a mechanic first crazychemist, lets not assume its the wheel bearings. its only a suggestion, i cant see quickfit stocking them for some reason though.

I forgot to tell him because as I opened the door and saw him, I noticed a big infestation of ants on our front doorstep so I spent the next 20 mins spraying ant killer everywhere, and he'd gone by the time I'd finished. The ants have gone though which is good news :T :o
