Well done to everyone who completed the June challenge, and a warm welcome to all newcomers!

Here goes for another half stone challenge!

Don't think of how much you'd like/need to lose, just focus on losing those 7lbs for July! See, it doesn't seem so bad, does it :D

This is a useful site!

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/account/index.php

You set up your own target by inputting weight, height, how active your lifestyle is, and any medical conditions. Then each day you keep a food diary by inputting what you eat, and also an activity log. The site works out your calories for input (food) and output (activity). The idea is that you keep the input between 500 and 1000 cals below the output, but without dropping below the minimum food cals set by the site for your lifestyle etc. And best of all the calorie count site is free!

If you're interested sign up here and lets help each other :T

Remember - It's 2009 and we are doing just fine!!!

Sign me up! :o I will post my start weight on Wednesday morning and you can add it to the first post. I'm going to redo all my weights in lbs/stones now that I've got my scales to work in imperial measures!

Here's to a lighter July! :j

AdrianHi
29-06-2009, 2:00 PM
In the June thread there were a few comments about calorie counting being may be a bit too scientific and not everyone thinks it's for them.
I'm going to fight back a bit on this one and highlight a few success stories, check out what people tried and failed with before calorie counting and their top tips.

Knowledge is power
http://caloriecount.about.com/knowledge-power-b308633

http://caloriecount.about.com/its-marathon-not-sprint-b304399

A proper breakfast challenge?
I note that some people are eating fruit, yoghurt and may be a few "healthy" biscuits for breakfast, by the afternoon they're snacking away as hunger gets a grip.
In July try eating a breakfast that's going to give you some slow release energy, like 2 weetabix with milk or yogurt, a decent bowl of porridge or some other cereals. Back it up with some more carbohydrate, may be some wholemeal bread at lunch time. Now see if you can last out until tea time without snacking. Find food that satisfy appetite without too many calories, fruit and yogurt is not going to do it even if they are generally healthy.

Good luck in July :)

Inspired by Junes thread I'm going to
1. reduce tea with milk and drink green tea
2. cut out the few squares of chocolate I sometimes have in an evening and replace it with fruit tea
3. Be more disciplined about beer and wine intake, that got too high in June calorie wise

I would like to be in please.
I haven't got scales in the house though. :o

I have a pair of M&S trousers that are beautiful - they're a size 10, I've only worn them a couple of times and can't get in them any more, I'm wearing a 12 now.
So tht's my main ambition, to get into them.
I've decided to stick with my old bras and not buy any new till I'm a size smaller so I have to lose weight now! ;)

I don't drink booze as I've a very low tolerance to it, I've virtually cut out coffee but still have tea with sugar and a bar of chocolate every day, like a Fry Chocolate Cream or creme egg.

Good luck everybody! :)

Good luck to you as well Barneysmom :D, are you going to try and weigh in at somewhere like Boots? or are you basing your weight loss on fitting in a smaller size?

Hmm cutting down the sugar in the tea and maybe smaller amounts of chocolate? A Cadbury's finger of fudge or something so you still get a mini choc hit but not so large a hit!

Yup.. count me in for July.

re. breakfast - I've actually done the opposite - I'm eating less carbs and more protein.

I was thinking it might be helpful if we all post examples of what we eat - in terms of giving each other ideas etc (and reassuring each other that we all crave junk!)

Typical day:
b. banana and yoghurt. if I'm swimming before work I add a low cal cereal bar. (4)
l. salad w/ protein (2 hardboiled eggs/veggie sausages/quorn etc), or say 1 egg and a couple of oatcakes. I fill up on loads of veggies. Then I usually have some fruit salad, jelly or yoghurt and a low cal 'sweet' (WW choc, milkyway, snackajacks popcorn, or 1 or 2 of biscuits). I have a really sweet tooth and work in an office with lots of chocolate about so if I don't have this I'm more likely to eat junk! (8)
d. 'normal' food rather than 'diet' food: pasta w/ veggie sauce, spaghetti bolognese, a fajita with homemade oven chips, stir fry, curry (co-ops low fat sauces w/ quorn and veggies is good), etc. Basically fairly normal stuff just easy on the cheese and oil in cooking! I'm veggie which does make the protein part *generally* lower cal. then something sweet such as an ice lolly, WW dessert, meringues w/ yoghurt and berries. (12)
snacks. 1 or 2 snacks a day such as snackajacks, banana, low fat crisps, cereal bars etc. I modify dinner based on how snacky I've been during the day so on 'bad' days go for stirfry, veggie stew, pasta with veggie sauce etc. (3)

I wouldn't say this is by any means perfect but I'm finding it a 'livable' diet for a sweet-addicted obese person! (I'm on 29 WW points per day, BTW) - I'm also getting in loads of fruit and veg but because I allow for sweet stuff and a relatively normal dinner (I just can't live on jacket potatoes, salad and stirfry!!) I'm managing to stick to it for the most part. (apart from last week LOL)

Hi all,
Dragon........can you count me in for next month pleeese??
I just love this thread, keep's me motivated and i love reading what your all eating and doing to lose those hard to shift pounds!

Personally i eat special k with red berries for brekkie and maybe a bicky for snack or some twiglet's. Lunch is either, soup and a slice of bread (wholemeal), or a tuna sandwich, ryvita's or cracker's with ham or a small amount of cheese or egg and mayo (light of course!) pitta bread stuffed with salad/tuna or ham, whatever is in the fridge really. tea is a *normal* meal, just smaller! Evening snack's might be sf chocolate bar or twiglets or value crisps (cos there usually smaller in size and calories) I drink one can of diet pepsi with my dinner, and the rest of the day i have water.

I want to lose another 21lb's by august bank holiday which is 8 weigh ins away , so that's an average of 2.6 lbs a week, just hope that i can do it!!!

Anyway, here's to the july challenge - good luck everyone!!!

Yup.. count me in for July.

re. breakfast - I've actually done the opposite - I'm eating less carbs and more protein.

Across my whole diet I've reduced carbs and pulled them earlier in the day because, for me, that's what it took to get rid of mid-afternoon snack craving which often ended up being Snikers bar or biscuits.

Today:
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals
2 weetabix plus semi skimmed milk 170 cals
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals

Soup 150 cals
2 slices bread no marg/butter 210 cals
Glass water
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals

Pint of weak squash 20 cals
Mash Potatoe 175 cals (about half portion size compared to pre-"diet")
Cordon Bleu Chicken 305 cals
Green beans 50 cals
Carrot 25 cals
Sweet corn 50 cals
Gravy 44 cals
1 square chocolate 30 cals
Fruit tea

Total 1339 calories. Bit under my target 1500 but I must have been 1800+ on Sunday due to beer at party :o so balancing it out. Have not felt unusually hungry all day :D

AdrianHi - I might start calorie counting, does it take long to look them up and record them? And do you weigh everything?

lightisfading and poshstock, thanks for your food journals also, your methods are obviously working! :D

sharronloves2spend - no chocolate OR booze? I can do one but not both. OK, no chocolate for me (let's see how long that lasts).

I ate ok today (with only one minor chocolate slip-up), can't remember exactly what I had from start to finish so no point in posting an incomplete food diary. :o I'll start properly tomorrow. I also walked for about 3 hours and 15 minutes, and did 33 flights of stairs. So I am feeling positive. :j I really have to do this. This thread has kept me on track all year, it was only when I abandoned it for a few weeks that I put weight on. So I am sticking with you guys from now on!!! :A

Your so lucky your boyfriend is joining and supporting you carol22 i wish my husband would do it with me because we usually eat the same thing as as he isn't too worried what he's eating i end up with the same as him.
Thank you for your kind encouragement Dragon, good luck with your weight loss too.
I have lost a total of 7lbs in two months, so really want to push myself this month to do it in one month. I shall weigh myself at the gym tomorrow to start myself off. I'm not at the gym on wednesday because i have my driving test in the morning then i have to work! I'm getting really nervous now. Fingers crossed.
i'm working now til the 15th july then i have a week off! yay. So should be disciplined into going to the gym before work and less eating. Whereas when i'm off for week the gm would likely to be missed.
I'm off to bed now, night everyone.
Take care x

No problem with posting on here! the last couple of days of the month tend to be a bit of a cross over!

The calorie count site takes a bit of getting into and yes you do need to weigh/measure everything (they work in US cups a lot so if you have some of those you are well away! Mind you I have two unused set of Rosemary Conley portion pots if anyone wants them!), once you get into the habit though it takes a few mins a day

AdrianHi

AdrianHi - I might start calorie counting, does it take long to look them up and record them? And do you weigh everything?

I did it for 2 weeks and I occasionally do it again for the odd day to check up on myself (like yesterday). 2 weeks was long enough to know the calories for the meals I usually eat and told me how much I needed to reduce pasta, potatoe, rice amount by in each dish.
I stopped doing the log because it took about 20-30 minutes out of each day to do it and I could do it well enough in my head by then. The food log at http://caloriecount.about.com is brilliant but (speaking as a business web appliacation designer) could be made easier and quicker to use. It has a big database of foods. Sometimes I had to weigh things and of course many cans and packets have calories shown on them. Then a little bit of estimating comes in. A slice of wholemeal bread is 100 calories when I record it, for some loafs it's really 105 and others it's 95 and then you sometimes eat the thicker end slice.... I'll just stick to recording 100 every time.
The weight watchers point system is probably a bit easier to manage but food packets have calories printed on them not weight watchers points.
One thing you can do with the food log is save your own items with a calorie count, so if the is a particular meal you eat regularily you can add it to your own tagged items list and add it to your log in one go instead of adding every ingredient every time... which gets tiresome.

I found it very effective. For a while I could look at my food log, see the calories across the whole week and before weighing myself think "that will be 2lbs off this week" and sure enough it would be. I weigh myself at the same time of day each time, just before the eveing meal.
I could also look at the food log, see the a "bad weekend" of 2500 calories per day and then only see a 1lb or no loss that week :o
I found this kind of feedback very motivational, gave me the strength of mind to not eat that mid-afternoon chocolate bar etc.

AdrianHi - thanks very much for your post. It's interesting to see that calorie counting is helping you to be disciplined - I could do with some of that.

I used to use the foodfocus website (IIRC) and it was pretty good, calculating my calories for food and exercise. I have started a food diary properly today - 236 cals consumed for breakfast (low fat Greek yog, strawbs and cherries) and am feeling pretty full.

AdrianHi
30-06-2009, 10:31 AM
236 cals consumed for breakfast (low fat Greek yog, strawbs and cherries) and am feeling pretty full.
OK, lets see how my day turns out too and what I know is coming. Tough one as I have a club meeting at a pub tonight which is a 245 cals pint of beer.

Plan for Today, target 1400 cals (still balancing last weekend, normally 1550 calories) including the beer that's to come:
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals
2 weetabix plus semi skimmed milk 170 cals
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals <- may be black tea instead?

Lunch at 12.45pm
Soup 121 cals <- todays lower calorie soup will help a bit
2 slices bread no marg/butter 210 cals
Glass water
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals (give up the coffe, no chance!)
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals <- have it black?

Pint of weak squash 20 cals <- water instead?
Evening meal? <- wife is cooking tonight so no idea
Pint of beer 245

So we're both on about 240 calories after breakfast including my moring tea and coffee.

I think July and August will be tricky for a lot of us with it being the holiday season and everything! But if we keep doing the best we can we will get there (Dragon saunters off to add CWM.com to the list)

AdrianHi
30-06-2009, 11:44 AM
I used to use the foodfocus website
Just had a quick look and logged todays breakfast. Perhaps marginally easier to use than caloriecount.about.com. It's suggesting a daily calorie in take of 1350 for me compared to 1550 for caloriecount.about.com. This seems a bit low, would be difficult for me to keep up and and lower than neccessary to shift the target 2lbs a week I put in
May be it reflects the fact that my starting weight is nearer my target than what I originally put into caloriecount.about.com.

Edit: hang on, if I use same lifstyle "sedentry" on both sites I get a recommendation of 1030 calories a day (not sustainable IMO) on foodfocus, 1500 a day at caloriecount.about.com which they say is the minimum recommended for a man.
Mmmm, make of that what you will.

Bit of an odd day today. Wasn't hungry at all til 11.40 when I had a pot of fruit salad, and just peckish for lunch rather than starving but still fancied quiche (small piece) and new potatoes (4) from the canteen.. so thats what I had :o We also went on an icecream run cus the office is like a sauna so having a 'family/snacksize' cornetto for afters! I'll try and work the points out though and think I should be okay for today, judging by last night when I didn't really want to eat anything.

Dr Dragon made me a huge bowl of salad for lunch to get some food down me, I think with this heat none of us want to eat much! (which can be be good) - off to pour some more green tea as it is nice and refreshing!

Yes, I need to lose a couple of inches off my waist, I think if I got scales again I'd get really OTT and be weighing myself every five minutes :o
I haven't had choc today, just a digestive biscuit.
I do my own mix of breakfast cereals, using Quaker Granola, Morrison's own Muesli, and Bran Flakes.
I mix them all together in a big tub and have a portion - it seems to keep me going for longer, and the raisins give me my sugar fix.

I prefer to have a slightly larger breakfast as I find I don't pick as much during the day.
I'm generally a grazer though, I'll eat little tiny bits every few hours rather than a big meal.

Based on what I've been reading this year, so long as the daily calorie count and nutrition is in the right place, this is the ideal way to keep control of appetitie. Food taken little and often, keeps blood sugar level steady and hunger at bay.

I'm in again with a starting weight of 12.7 :)

I successfully gave up sweets and alcohol for at least a couple of weeks in June but alas didn't stay the course. I have no excuses coming up, no special days or holidays or anything, so I'm going to stick with it in July. I can already feel the difference with just the few lbs gone.

I'm also walking about an hour a day faithfully (and fast!) and will be back going to the gym 3 times a week :)

Good luck everyone!

So did you notice a big difference with giving up the sweets and alcohol? Gotta say, giving up booze would be very hard for me. I don't even drink that much, but OH would cry if I didn't share a glass or two of vino with him the odd evening!

Good first day for me. Shreddies with skim milk for breakfast. Egg on toast for lunch. 1/2 a melon for snack. Wraps with chicken and salad for tea. No thoughts of the brown stuff that melts in the mouth and goes perfectly with tea. Or the liquid stuff made from grapes.

Had loads of water and 2 can of vimto light.

I too like to graze. I need to be fed and watered every 2 hours :(

Hiyas! I promise faithfully that I WILL lose 7st by the end of the month (hopefully more!).

Starting weight = 13st 13.4lbs.

I'm cheating and starting yesterday though! I've rejoined www.weightlossresources.co.uk (http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk) and bought a supply of Alli tablets at nearly £30, so I need to make it work. I refuse to have wasted £40 (by the end of July).

I managed to turn down a biscuit and although I had eaten my lunch and snacks by 9:30am (boredom eating at work), at least it meant I wasn't hungry through the day.

Yesterday's menu:

B: 40g Asda Vitality Cereal + 150mls skimmed milk.

L: Ham & Salad wrap (with mayonnaise - not light)
Portion of Papaya & Mango.

D: Tewkesbury Mustard Beef - an Asda ready meal - (and vegetables).

S: 2 x Crumpets with jam and spread (not low fat).

Snacks: Asda GFY Pomegranate Cereal Bar, half a punnet of raspberries.

Total for day: 1135
Fat (g): 25.6g (21.1%)

It isn't so much the wine itself as what I eat when I'm drinking it :( and the quantities. And I did lose 3lb when I was off wine and sweets in the space of about 10 days and then just 1lb more in the rest of the month :( so it does make a difference to me....

well i am off on holiday very early tomorrow morning, i have no food in the house so not sure what i am going to eat today. i know i am going to have to be slightly disciplined while i am away but it is going to be very difficult with so much access to food and alcohol!
This will be my last post for a week unless i manage to get online on my phone.

I weighed in this morning at 131.8lbs (almost 9st 6lbs)... happy that I'm a little lighter than yesterday. So that's my starting weight for July - Dragon, can you add it to the first post? My target for July is 8st 13lbs... I would be so happy to get under the 9st mark but have a weekend away coming up so will have to be very good all month!

I'm having a low fat Greek yog for breakfast, which will be followed shortly by some fruit. Lunch will be HM soup and bread (again - need to use it up!). And I intend to do plenty of walking (even though the weather is HORRIBLE).

Good luck all!!!!!!!!

How yesterday turned out (not going to do this every day).

Plan for yesterday, target 1400 cals (still balancing last weekend, normally 1550 calories) including the beer that's to come:
Breakfast 8.45pm at work - morning
Mug of tea plus semi-milk 20 cals
2 weetabix plus semi skimmed milk 170 cals
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals
Mug of tea- black 0 cals

Lunch at 12.45pm
Soup 121 cals <- todays lower calorie soup will help a bit
2 slices bread no marg/butter 200 cals
Glass water
Coffee plus semi milk and 1/2 tsp sugar 30 cals (give up the coffe, no chance!)
Green tea 0 cals

Dinner 8.30pm
Water 0 cals
Spagetti bolognaise (home cooked), 550 cals (ingrediant calories added up using caloriecount.about.com)
Pint of beer 245

Total: 1366 cals :T
Managed to make most of the room for the evening beer with black tea, green tea and water instead of usual orange squash.

Dinner was at 8.30pm, feeling pretty hungry by 6pm but I was on the train home with no access to food so no temptation. Now there's a trick, if it's hard to get through the day without snacking, plan what is eaten when so your hungry at a time and place where there is no access to food. Just make sure it's not when driving, low blood sugar affects driving (polic drivers handbook).

Phew, glad you took those comments the right way, comes over a bit strong reading it back half a day later :o

I tried and failed on calorie counting once before, it was seeing my weight approaching another whole stone in weigh and realising it was an upward trend that got my mind in order. And then to begin with a few days of ignoring a rumbling stomach that was expecting a mid-afternoon snack. A few days of that and the stomach and mind stopped expecting the snack and it wasn't quite so hard.
For me a big part of all this was deciding to put brain in control of what goes in rather than just responding to what the stomach thinks it wants.
Got a live a little too though, had my beer out last night, managed to stick with only having one (about 250 cals) :j

(I copied this from the other thread to reply here)

Well done on the restraint! And feel free to be as honest/blunt as you like, it is good for me to hear the unvarnished truth. :o

That's a huge challenge for me, brain over stomach! If I can crack that it will be half the battle. How lng does it take before it gets easier and the 'mouth hunger' abates? A few days? Weeks? I wonder if there are any mind tricks which would help me ignore the snack urge. I'm off to google xo

Well done on making room for the beer! Your food yesterday was quite a bit healthier than mine too. This calorie counting lark does make sense it seems.

I agree, food is all too easily available these days - it is good to be able to take oneself away from it regularly to remove the ability to snack! :o

p.s. has anyone read the Allen Carr 'Easyweigh to lose weight' book?

I still get a bit of mouth hunger at times, but it's easier to manage now.
For me, I cannot understate how important it was to carefully choose the timing of eating and spreading throughout the day intake of slow energy release food like breakfast cereals (Weetabix, Porridge etc.), lunch a bit of bread and soups are very good for satisfying hunger for longer, evening meals have potatoe, rice or pasta in a quantity about 2/3rds of what I used to eat.
Breakfast at work 8.45am because it means I can last until 12.45pm for lunch without snacking.
Again for me, controlling mouth "hunger" was mind over stomach but also not going "cold turkey" so to speak. Once you have the pattern of slow release energy foods in place throughout your day, perhaps replacing some of the fruits and yogurts, try removing one of the snacks from your day. Stick with that for a couple of days then remove then next uneccessary snack. It's much easier to take it one step at a time so your only having to get used to one missing snack time per day instead of several at once.
Replace missing vitamins/fibre from reduced high calorie fruit intake with lower calorie vegatable intake. May be even keep a snack but swap the 65 calorie apple thats going to give you a sugar high followed by a blood sugar low (when the insulin kicks in) which makes you fell hungry again, with a 25 calorie raw carrot that will not cause the blood sugar high then low.

I suppose it is quite technical but it really did and still does work for me. I also feel I can keep it up for as long as it takes and to keep the weight off this is really soemthing that has to continue for a life time if a bit less strict once I'm into maintaining weight.

I only lost 1lb in June but I know exactly why, my eating pattern went out the window while on 2 week holiday and I don't really know what calories I was taking in due to eating out a lot.

July is a new month, time to get back on plan :)

Well my start weight for July is 11 st 9 lbs (can you pop that on 1st post please Dragon) so I've lost 2 lbs last week, which isn't great but its a start and I'm just chuffed that I didn't put on this week!!!

I hardly ate anything yesterday, but drank loadssss with it being so hot. I went for a run after I finished work which is a bit of a first for me - never had the urge to do that before! Note to self - buy sports bra....running while holding my chest is not a good look. :rotfl:

I haven't had my protein shake this morning as we were out of milk, OH bought me a sausage sandwich instead oops which has filled me up nicely. Off food shopping soon as I'm not working til later, so not sure what exercise I'll be doing later...might end up doing some lunges and squats etc if I don't have time for anything else.

Well done all those who have lost, and welcome new peeps to the thread!! :T :T

Binky - have a brill holiday..I wouldn't stress too much about what you eat and drink, just enjoy yourself! :D

Everyone has their own way to do things and what works for one doesn`t suit others.
I find it best if I pick a certain time and day to weigh myself and only do it once a week.
Day by day weighing doesn`t work for me because there may be no diffrence from the previous day and you could even have gone UP.
This is where a lot of people fail and give up because the diet "isn`t working" so why bother.
Plenty of water is another good tip to "fill you up" between meals.
My way is to count the calories and stick to my daily limit.
Easier said than done but just my 2p worth on DAY 1.

miss_nadine, your menu for today sounds gorgeous!!!!

AdrianHi - you are so right, eating well has to be a lifelong habit rather than a 'diet' which has a start and end. You've made me think about my fruit intake too. I know fruit is healthy and all, but it doesn't really fill me up. Often I just have a piece of fruit to give me something to do when I get the urge to munch. I guess a carrot is better than an apple for the old blood sugar. Maybe even replace with lower calorie/lower sugar fruits like berries? What's your take on protein? I find that the more protein I eat, the more satisfied I am.

Right, I'm off to have my HM soup, yummy.

Maybe even replace with lower calorie/lower sugar fruits like berries? What's your take on protein? I find that the more protein I eat, the more satisfied I am.

There is an expression in computer programming / IT "TIMTOWDI" - There Is More Than One Way To Do It.
If you really want to have some sweet fruit in your day find a time, type of fruit and space for it in your calorie in take and have it.
One solution to keeping blood sugar steady might be having the berries after other food that has what it takes to keep your appetite satisfied for longer. May be this is protein, carbs or a mixture of the two.
Try it out for a few days, if it works for you stick with it.
Other than making sure I have some each day protein intake isn't something I have focused on so don't really have a view. Will read with interest what others have to say on this.

I'm thinking for people starting out calorie counting this month (or not succeeding yet), the best thing to do is experiment for a a week or two and find a pattern of food intake that keeps appetite satisfied, is a balanced diet and puts calorie intake 500 under what you burn (so the more active need to take in more). Don't get concerned with actually loosing weight to start with.
Some people find their body resists loosing the fat to start with, mine did, it took 3 weeks before the weight started coming down.

alared - thanks for the tips! I shouldn't but I do like the daily weigh ins as they focus my mind! How did you work out your calorie limit?

http://caloriecount.about.com/

If you enrol and put in your details and starting weight and your target,it tells you how many calories you`re allowed per day and over what period.
Losing 2lbs per week is thought to be "safest".

Years ago and I mean years ago I bought a book called "your greatest guide to calories" published by Slimming Magazine, which gives you the calories of everything.
Don`t know if they still publish it,but there are others that will do the job.
I know there are sites online that you can find out the calories in food and drink, but having it close at hand and being able to look it up instantly is better than going online to search.

Much easier these days with calories on most packets.

I came across this thread this morning and thought that when I get home from work I'll join, it sounds just what I need. However I think I may be excommunicated before I start! I've had a really bingeing day and am full of stuff that's making me feel solid and will probably give me indigestion all night - but it was so yummy.

Briefly I weigh about 13.4 - or I did pre-binge - and about 18 months ago lost 1.5 stones. I haven't put that weight back on amazingly enough so take it that I'm eating/exercising at about the right level for maintenance though obviously need to lose more. I know I overeat not because I'm hungry, but for other reasons. For example today was supermarket shop day and as I've been paid a bit more this week, thought I'd treat myself with food. There were some yummy cakes and tiramisu in the reduced-to-clear section so of course I had to have those. (After all if they're reduced they can't be fattening too?!!!)So for my tea I ended up with salad roll (h-m) followed by crumpet and marmite (x2) - another treat, followed by tiramisu. The cakes had been eaten as I drove home. I remember Paul McKenna saying that people trying to lose weight think about food all the time except when they're eating it, and then they shovel it in hardly noticing it and even thinking about whether there are seconds or what the next course is. That's so me!!! I also don't overeat when I'm fed up, but when I'm feeling good perversely.

So please can I join? Several things are happening over the next couple of weeks which might make it hard but I won't binge again - promise!

downshifter, welcome and thanks for posting. Of course we won't excommunicate you - if that happened to everyone who'd gone off the rails and binged on junk this thread would have no members!!!!!!!! :rotfl: Forget about today - well, not completely. Focus on how your eating made you feel and use that as a motivation not to do the same tomorrow.

I also snack loads, whether I'm happy or sad! It's so hard not to! :o I've started calorie counting, it'll take a while to work it all out but it seems to be giving me a good kick up the bum if I have to account for everything I eat.

Most of us treat this thread as a sort of diary/confessional/support network and it is marvellous. You will love it xo

Edit: #100! :D (I am so sad)

coffeeholic - I did mix my shake with water, maybe that's the problem. Hmm. Anyway, it worked fine and killed my snack urges. I'm going to stick with it, it's only one yucky drink per day after all!

I walked for about an hour and 15, so that's almost 2.5 hours' walking today, 23 flights of stairs and about 40 squats. I ate slightly better than yesterday although could have done better. Jelly sweets and baked crisps don't sound that bad, and at least you had a WW meal to make up for it. OH cooked us a really stodgy pasta-y dinner, I dread to think how many cals were in it! I had a fairly big portion too, as I hadn't snacked all afternoon. So maybe it balanced out (yeah right!).

Here's to tomorrow!! :D

Going to state the obvious here,if your daily intake of calories is, for instance, 2000,and through counting the calories and exercise you manage to stay below it -------------- you WILL lose weight over a given period.
Otherwise ----------- you will NOT.

The other thing I`d point out is that you must WANT to lose weight.

Keep counting. :T

Had a manic couple of days, so havn't caught up, hope everyone is doing well. Day 3 for me, feel good less bloated and quiet confident i can do this!!!

Had porridge for my breakky, having soup for lunch with a piece of bread and salmon with new potatoes and salad for tea. Drinking loads of water due to the weather.

Will be back later to catch up xxx

alared - it may be obvious, but thanks for stating it!!! I must find out my BMR and how many cals I burn exercising on an average day and aim to be 500 below that combined figure.

sharron - what changes have you made and how are you finding it?

Today's going ok so far, but haven't done any stairs yet or had my protein shake!!

tara747
02-07-2009, 11:13 AM
I just had the shake, mixed it with half water/half SS milk like sharron recommended... much nicer!!! :) I'm feeling pretty full and hopefully won't snack all day.

tara747
02-07-2009, 12:19 PM
I also worked out my BMR... 1375 cals per day! That's without lifting a finger. I've worked out that I walk at least 70 minutes a day at min. 3mph and (from this week) spend at least 10 minutes a day climbing stairs, so that's 228 calories minimum every day. Total is 1603 calories. So I need to do more exercise to burn a total of 1900 cals and eat about 1400 cals a day. Is that about right?

tara747
02-07-2009, 3:53 PM
I still haven't snacked, apart from half an orange and few strawbs... and still feeling fine! :o

Yesterday evening was the worst time for snacking... maybe the effects of the shake had worn off by then? I'll have to be ready this evening, maybe try some meringue nests with natural yogurt (I heard they're only 50 cals each).

Not going to get much exercise in this evening, I'm meeting a friend for coffee after work and it'll be too late to go for another walk by the time I get home and have dinner (sorry - meant to add - AND do the ironing - I have been promising myself that I'd do it on the first wet day and this is it).

Ironing burns calories right? :D

Yoohoo I'm here as well :hello: Have just finished work so am debating whether to sit out in the sun with a book and a cold drink.....or make up for my missed exercise yesterday. I know which one I'd rather be doing :rotfl:

Maybe I'll got for a walk and get some sun and exercise at same time. I haven't snacked all day so far - had my choc shake this morning yummm and beans on toast for lunch and I don't feel peckish at all. We'll see if I'm still feeling the same when I get the munchies around 9pm which usually happens.

According to the calorie count website ironing burns 165 cals an hour. :D I'll send mine over as well if you like, anything to help out a fellow slimmer! :p

coffeeholic, go for a walk in the sun!

I am impressed with the shakes, I must say. I would normally be climbing the walls with snack attacks by now but am fine. It's the evening I have to be careful! I would have another wee half-portion shake now but it says only one per day.

No thanks to your ironing, I have SO much of it I'll be there for hours!!! 165 cals per hour you say? That sounds good :D

Taka that made me laugh, go for it though!
Tara, ironing definitely counts. As does vacuuming, dusting, and polishing.

That reminds me, another good idea if you're trying to get step counts up and things is to put washing basket in a different room to the washing machine, and load it one item at a time.

Today I had rice crispies with a tiny bit of sugar for breakfast with coffee, both with semiskimmed milk, homemade carrot soup for lunch with a pitta bread, and a strawberry yoghurt. Having salmon with potatoes and veg for dinner, yum yum yum. Went to the gym earlier, 10 minutes on the bike, 10 minutes on the cross trainer, 10 minutes on weight machines, 50 situps, and then for a treat I went in the sauna for 10 minutes.

Hope you are all well

Argh! Put on 2lb at weigh in! :( On top of the SEVENTH person from my workplace joining my meeting (is it just me who likes relative anonymity? I'm way too self conscious about my weight to have half the building asking me how it went the day after weigh in!).

Anyway ... as this weeks weigh in is only 2 days into the month, and I'm sure the gain is due to the week before last (which was a bad week - I've been pretty good this week!!) I'm not counting it as July (so there! :p ) 4 full weeks / weigh ins from now takes me up to the 30th so that's what I'll do my 7lbs over. Ahem. Yes. I'm making excuses. Don't care! :p

HI everyone - I have been really busy, sorry I haven't been around.
Well my 2 weeks off work has beenbrilliant and I'm not looking forward to Monday.
I've done some serious walking, climbed Snowdon too which was quite hard in this heat!
We walked round Rudyard Lake to, about 4 miles I think.
Then last night a sudden spurt of energy had me totally cleaning the bathroom, including the window and floor, at about 10 o'clock. I find it much easier to clean the bathroom in just my pants lol.

But, I feel so much better for all the extra excercise and I'm a bit worried about fitting it in next week when I'm back to about 6 hours on the road every day and a few hours in my customer's places (I'm a field service engineer)

Went to fill the car up yesterday and it was only then that chocolate popped into my head. It was then that I realised I hadn't thought about it for days! I just thought well I haven't missed it up till now so I won't bother. Just next week when I'm stuck on the M1 or M6 or whatever, I know the cravings will be serious.

tara747
03-07-2009, 8:53 AM
carol22 - that's the attitude! :D Good luck at the gym.

Barneysmom, wow, you certainly have been active! Hope it's paid off on the scales. Have you tried taking healthy snacks with you to work to stave off the urge for chocolate?

I have just had a muffin (146 cals) with olive spread (60 cals - I know as it is one of the little catering pots left over from camping a couple of weeks ago) for breakfast. I was starving when I woke up and my Greek yogurt is at work.

miss_nadine, that all sounds very healthy!

My breakfast was:

Muffin and olive spread (not planned!) - 200 cals
150g low fat Greek yog - 120 cals

I was going to have a protein shake but am feeling quite full and it is 150 cals (with milk), so I shall have it later if I'm feeling hungry.

Lunch will be leftover lamb from last night with some wholemeal bread (no spread needed as lamb is very moist and I will heat it in the microwave).

Snack will be an orange and 3 plums. I also have a meringue nest with me if I feel the need for something sweet - 50 cals! :D Does anyone else like these?

Dinner will be a chicken stir fry. Possible small glass of wine and NO snacks!

Absolutely, but worth bearing in mind your metabolism can play some tricks like adjusting body temperature (and so calories used) to try and maintain a weight it is used to. This can lead to periods of no fat loss, especialy at the start and you can hit a plateaux sometimes. Weight often comes down in steps as a result.
Keep the faith, keep to calory intake in the right place and your metabolism has to give up the fight and start burning fat.
Excercise more and heavier muscle develops which can slow weight loss, but the fat is still going so good news.

AdrianHi

156 calories per hour vs. sitting reading a book which is 88 calories per hour.

Drat it.
Yesterday an unplanned pint and a half of beer due to attending a close friend Dad's funeral - couldn't not do it really. I was restrained with the cold buffet at lunch, but it's bound to be more calories than usual.
Some extra walking and more green tea instead of tea and milk is called for.

Sounds about right. Only way to know is to go with this pattern and watch what happens to the weight over this month and reduce calories a bit more if you don't loose 1-2 lbs a week by the last week of the month.

Food-wise today so far I had my protein shake around 8am, and a slice of toast about 11ish. Lunch will be a WW meal and I have grapes to snack on. I have no idea what I'm going to have for dinner, OH is out tonight so I just have to cater for myself. Hoping I don't get the Friday night munchies and start craving pizza and chips and all sorts. Anyway! Get some meringues in for tonight and you will curb any sweet cravings without too many calories. Tesco Finest are 2 for £2 ATM and soooo yummy!

Don't worry about the unplanned calories, as you say you can make up for it elsewhere. :A

Trying to give myself a kick up the bum today. I seem to have lost my impetus :( and was just in a generally foul mood today so have been really struggling not to comfort eat. I have had rather a lot of snacks (lower cal snacks ie. a WW choc bar rather than a Mars - but snacks all the same!) but thanks to OH making a veggie stew for dinner I think I'm only a couple of points over for today. At least I'm managing to keep the fruit + veg intake up, even if my diet is leaving a lot to be desired atm

Think I will go to bed with my current book - Not On The Label (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Not-Label-What-Really-Plate/dp/0141015667) - if that doesn't put me off eating nothing will!

Oh yeah, does anybody have any recommendations for diet (overcoming emotional eating?) or low cal cookery books? bearing in mind I'm veggie - don't buy WW books as they're 95% meat  I have a £20 amazon voucher languishing in my purse :)

Welcome, KM :)

I've got a horrid sweet tooth too - my lifesavers are lower cal chocolate bars (milky ways, curly wurlys, weightwatchers bars, etc), skinny cow ice cream lollies, meringue nests (couldnt tell you cals.. im sure someone else can.. but they're only half a point on WW whereas a chocolate bar is 5, 6 or more!), and in this weather lots of ice lollies (they're sugary but a lot less cals than chocolate!!).

There's lots of lower cal crisps available too - Walkers Lites, Walkers Baked, Sunbites, own brand etc.. most have less than half the weightwatchers points of 'normal' crisps but I couldn't tell you actual cals as I don't use them. Homemade popcorn is a good choice too - heat a little oil in a pan with a tight fitting lid, pour in no more than a single layer of popping corn, lid on and shake regularly til the popping stops! Then sprinkle salt on. It helps a lot with the salty snack cravings :) You can get air poppers too which would remove the need for oil.. must get one of them sometime.

I haven't had a bad weekend food-wise although today we did go to OH's parents for a bbq but I was good and didn't overindulge which I normally would have done. Had a couple of glasses of wine with lunch to de-stress from a busy working week. No dinner which I know is daft but I'm feeling a bit anxious and tense at the moment thanks to the neighbours from hell!

Aw Dragon big hugs to you, hope you're soon feeling better and medication-free for a while. :D

See you all tomorrow morning for the weigh in xxxxxxxx

Morning all xxx :D

Had my WI this morning as its a brand new week and I've lost 1 lb, so I'm super chuffed. Just need to up my exercise for this week as totm is coming so I'll be bloated and feeling rubbish. A couple of weeks ago I took some pics of myself in my undies  so I could compare them as I was feeling frustrated about not losing anything. I took some more pics last night and you could really see the difference so I'm obviously doing something right. Still loads of work to go before I can even think about donning that bikini though. Maybe taking measurements of my thighs, stomach, waist etc is the way to go as OH reckons I'm not losing weight as fat is turning to muscle. We'll see......

Fairyshazza - best of luck with calorie count - I downloaded the toolbar which I found really helpful although I haven't used the food logs lately, I do find it useful to know how many cals certain activites are burning.

Have a lovely Monday everyone, I'd better go and do some work! :rotfl:

Well I have made my lunch this morning and bought it to work with me today. I’ve got a lovely mixed lettuce, watercress, beetroot and chive salad with tomatoes and chicken. Not quite sure what I’ll be having for tea tonight yet as I will be off to Aquafit later so won’t be eating until I get home from the leisure centre – need to think about that one during the day.

Am determined that I will try my hardest to lose some weight this month. I’ve got a wedding on 24th July in Italy and if I could lose a little weight before then I would be very happy. Am going to get my !!! to the gym and up my exercise alongside eating well – fingers crossed it will give me some results.

Good morning all!

Welcome FairyShazza, and your salad today sounds yummy!!!!! Where is the wedding?

carol22 - congrats on the results!!

Dragon - where do you live again? Hope the weather is cooler today (should be, it's about 17C here!) and you are feeling better xoxoxo

lightisfading - LOL! No, you are not a bad person for feeling good about your colleague's bad days! :rotfl:

Keeping Motivated - welcome! I'm terrible for snacking too. Meringues have only 50 cals each and are nice and sweet with some plain low fat yogurt. Other healthy snacks - um... raw veg, fruit, oatcakes, a couple of nuts... that's all I can think of right now!

sharron - how are the tonsils today?

miss_nadine, how did the WI go?

coffeeholic, what are your neighbours up to? Poor you! Good idea about the pics, I might try that myself. Well done on the 1lb loss and it does sound like you're toning up and losing inches.

Phew! Hope that's everyone covered. :D

I had an OK weekend, didn't do that much exercise but didn't eat that badly either. I didn't WI this morning, forgot! :o Back to the routine again, I'm off to do some stairs x

Miss Nadine - well done on your loss :)

I forgot to weigh myself again this morning so am not 100% sure what my starting point is, I have a rough idea but I must remember to get on those scales tomorrow when I get up.

I tend to snack more when at work than at home – I graze throughout the day so I always bring lots of little things I can snack on, mostly fruit (current faves are cherries and tomatoes) although I have been known to snack on cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices as well. The main thing I try and do is when I feel like I want to snack is have a drink of water instead as quite often that stops me feeling like I want anything to eat. Weight watchers do some nice Rosemary and Thyme crackers which come in individual packs of two and are quite nice – I tried them last week because they were on offer in Asda.

Tara – the wedding is in Italy :) we are out there for 5 days and it is going to be really hard for me as I love Italian food so much but I am going to try and make sure I eat plenty of salads and try and keep the really bad stuff to a minimum as much as I can.

well done on all the losses peeps, great news on a monday morning, esp Miss Nadine!
Dragon, hugs to ya hunny xx

I weighed myself this morning and am at 12.9still so nothing lost this week. Gutted as i have been really good foodwise - no cholocate or junk food, and loads of fruit. Have been for out for walks 3 times as well - up to an hour at a time up to the local shopping centre, buy milk etc and walk back again. Can't o much strenuous excercise coz of my leg so thought the walking would help with the weight loss, but obviously not!

Have to say though it does feel good to know i am eating better food and smaller portions, makes me feel more of a lady. Kids are gorging on fruit at the moment as well so that's good.

Hope we all have a good week

Hi all, monday weigh in day again!!
Sorry havent been around this week, but I have been poorly, and had TOTM as well , although all things considered I had a 'good' TOTM for a change - just as well really! So havent been eating much and what i have eaten hasn't stayed in long - iykwim!!
Managed to drink loads tho', which isn't difficult in the heat (lol), not done hardly any exercise unless you include two hours of cleaning in the heat everyday!
No swimming again this week, went to rugby to pick up a storage item that i won on ebay, so had a scout round there, so walking involved there i suppose and i did melt a few pounds away in the heat!

Anyway, back to my weight today, and bearing in mind that i'd hardly eaten for at least 3 day's - i managed to lose a whopping 4lbs today!!

I am really pleased with that, :T that makes half a stone in 2 weeks - i wish i could keep that up! i'd be hit my target in no time!!

So i need to lose 3lb () next week to get under the next stone, which is a big milestone for me, i might be brave and reveal my weight to you all if i do managed it  - but don't hold your breath on that one!!!

Anyway, well done one and all, hope that you all have a good week, i'm off now to read through the thread where i left off and then make lunch for me and DS.

XxXxXx :A

ps.
sorry, just updated my siggy and noticed that i've lost 50lbs, so that takes me over the 3 1/2 stone mark - well, i'm so pleeesed with myself i'm gonna have a treat today me thinks! xx

AdrianHi - 88 cals per hour for reading???? I would rather read for two hours than iron for one! :rotfl: What does lying down burn?
Don't worry about the unplanned calories, as you say you can make up for it elsewhere. :A

Doesn't say for lying down / sleeping, reading was the most inactive thing I could find.
The only thing I could find listed relating to being in bed uses 102 calories per hour ;)

Thought Id join in with you all if thats ok.

I dont want to reveal how much I weighed either - not til Ive knocked off a lot more.

Ive been dieting for about 3 months now but the last 3 weeks have been in real earnest as I have a wedding in the states on 1 August.

Ive managed to get 3 and half pounds off in the last week and I am pleased with that. I am calorie counting, walking a bit more. I have a back/knee prob, I used to gym 5 times a week and dance 3 times a week - I was a size 10 then and underweight to be honest. I started dieting when I was struggling to get into size 16 jeans  As a triple whammy, no gym/dance, hit menopause and packed up 25 fags a day habit.

All in all Ive lost 1 stone 5 lbs to date. Id like to lose another 2 stone.

Hi not really, I have just got my self into a mind set where I realise that the pleasure of eating is far outweighed by the misery of not wanting to look in mirrors or go out buying new clothes.

Im calorie counting so that I eat roughly 1200 calories a day. I am grazing, eating every few hours even if its an apple or a few cherries - that stops me feeling hungry and binging. I also drink a glass of water when I feel hungry.

I packed up ciggies nearly 3 years ago now - after smoking for 40 years - if I could do that, I must be able to get shot of this extra weight which is making my legs and ankles hurt and my car creak as I get in and out of it.

Thanks for the welcome :)

COFFEEHOLIC, YES, i HAVE THEM WITH PLAIN YOGURT. tHE MERINGUE IS SWEET ENOUGH AND THE YOGURT GIVES IT A SLIGHT TANG. mMM!

What a coincidence. I discovered meringue nests a few months back 52 calories each and I too have them with fat free plain yoghurt and a little bit of fresh fruit. Strawberries or cherries at the moment - got tons of those from the market - banana sometimes.

hethmar, welcome and thanks for your post. You really do seem to have that willpower which so many people lack (including me :o). How did you come to this stage, was it a LBM or what did it for you?

I really need to get real with myself about my eating and exercising - I am doing too much of one and not enough of the other!! I read this today on the Tesco Diets site, it was a really good kick up the bum for me:

http://www.tescodiets.com/getting-real-about-slimming-for-summer/24006/18/1322/

I am maintaining at the minute (if fluctuating within a 5lb range counts), so I'm guessing that my current level of eating and exercise is right for maintaining. I therefore need to up my exercise levels and reduce my calorie consumption properly to lose weight. And keep it up!!!! :o So obvious but not so easy to do...

Calorie counting bores me, I'll be honest with you. If I can't find the content of a food (or it's a dish I haven't cooked and I don't know the ingredient quantities) then I'll give up for that day as I know it won't be accurate. :( Is that defeatist?

Anyway, sorry for the ramble...

hethmar

I dont know, its my nature I guess :) I tend to prevaricate for ages and then get stuck in.

Lying on my bed nearly breaking my fingers trying to do up some size 16 jeans was a bit of a kick up the butt. But I think just looking in the mirror - I had to force myself to do it naked and I felt so low that I knew there was only way I could make it better ( I honestly looked like Bubbles de Vere) - and that wasnt eating a cream cake to cheer myself up.

You dont need to calorie count everything - well, Ive learnt really what calories are roughly in what. But if you are cooking for a family I know its hard. I am doing chicken casserole tonight. OH will have it with crispy roast potatoes and some crusty hot bread and butter. I will have half a chicken breast on its own.

Thats the only way Im going to lose weight and Im determined that by Christmas I shall be a size 12 :)

Hey all,

Was planning on making pasta for tea but then realised I had 2 courgettes attempting to take over the world on the plants outside - one yellow and one green. In the spirit of moneysaving they've been added to a tin of chickpeas (40p), creamed coconut (aka coconut milk - bought as 'end of line' for 9p), a splodge of thai curry paste (5p), an onion (5p) and some rice (7p) to make 3 meals for a total of 66p :T I think I'll just enjoy my very tasty, veg packed meal and ignore the calories in coconut milk LOL :D

Tomorrow, day 8 and one week on, I plan to weigh myself for the first time.
I`ve already explained that I only do it once a week hoping to see a reduction, whereas to keep jumping on and off the scales every day and hardly seeing them move and some times going the wrong way,can be disheartening.
I "feel" that I have lost weight, mainly round the waist as my jeans seem less tight.
I`ve stuck ridgidly to calorie counting and cut back on alcohol, just the odd can of lager and glass of wine
If it wasn`t for Dragon`s monthly "junkit",I would have plodded on as usual and not bothered trying to lose the surplus few lbs.

Good luck to everyone and keep counting the cals or whatever works for you.
Will post the weight tomorrow.:eek::eek:

Yes, its a bit disappointing when you feel slimmer but the scales dont say that :( I weighed myself today after 2 days (they are electronic scales) and Ive lost just 4 oz! 4 oz, oh well, half a pack of butter is better than nothing or putting on weight.

Yesterday went well – had my salad for lunch with a fat free yoghurt afterwards. Got home and then went swimming for 30 minutes before doing a 30 minute Intense Aquafit class. Then went home and had jacket potato with Tuna in extra light mayo and a salad.

Today I’ve bought in tuna salad for lunch and melon and cherries to snack on during the day. Going to make a stir fry tonight possibly turkey or chicken depending on what takes my fancy later but with plenty of vegetables in it.

Am aiming to go to the gym after work even if it’s only for a little while. Was going to go for a walk but it’s chucking it down with rain so not sure how likely that is going to be now.

Only thing was I still forgot to weigh myself this morning! I overslept and it was all a bit of a mad dash so it slipped my mind. Will do it first thing tomorrow though I very much doubt I will be brave enough to share my weight on here.

Evening all xxx

Couldn't get on last night for some reason. Well done those who lost or sts at WI this week, and for anyone who gained...this is a new week! :D

Tara - we have a young couple living next door who think its acceptable to blast music at lovely antisocial times of the day, 2am sometimes and can't understand why neighbours on both side are asking them to shut up. There's only so many times you can knock on someone's door and ask them nicely to turn it down before it gets nasty. Grrrr.

Heth - hi and welcome. I'm also struggling to shed the lbs that I've stacked on after giving up the ciggies, almost 1 year for me now. Well done on your weight loss so far, long may it continue!

We're inheriting some new scales tomorrow which I'm quite excited about (I really need to get out more :rotfl:) Ones which tell you body fat and muscle mass and way too much info that you will never need - so I can see if I'm gaining muscle or not.

Food shopping tomorrow so I'm gonna look out for those meringue nests yummm. I've got some strawberries which are about to go off so am sure I can do something with those and some yoghurt.

Hurrah! My first under-points + healthy day in a good couple of weeks. :T

I've kind of fallen off the wagon and really struggling to re-motivate myself... while I've not been incredibly bad this week I've definitely been a few points over each day, generally too much snacking, craving pasta/bread etc.

I've just had a session on amazon as joint retail therapy and motivation :rotfl: ( this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0091902479/ref=ox_ya_oh_product) , this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0786885084/ref=ox_ya_oh_product) & this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/156924264X/ref=ox_ya_oh_product) ). The vegan cookery book to try and get some new recipe ideas that aren't winter-y (stew etc) and aren't crammed with cheese / fake meat, and two books to try and work on my 'headspace' a little. All but £3 paid for with a gift certificate so guilt-free indulgence.

Anyway ... better day today. Loads of fruit, veg & yoghurt - just had a whoopsied-strawbs-and-banana smoothie and some asparagus for my night time snack - better than the usual junk!

Dragon - walking on crutches is so hard I think it burns at least 10x as many cals ;) or if not it should be LOL.

Determined to get back on with the diet! Someone give me a kick up the bum!

alared - good luck with the WI, I'm sure you'll have lost if your clothes feel looser!

Dragon - I love Wagamama, wish we had one here, yum yum. I agree about walking on crutches, it is v. tiring so bound to burn lots of cals!

sharron - glad you're better, and well done on the restraint - I'd be weighing myself even if I knew it was fake weight loss! :rotfl:

coffeeholic - you poor thing! We've had noisy neighbours and it is just awful. What about phoning the council? They have powers in that area (not exactly sure what but you could ask). Definitely get the meringues, they are fab!! Well done on kicking the habit and good luck with your scales (you are not sad at all btw!).

I've been a bit bad today, I had a packet of Minstrels and a Fudge as well as all my meals - and dinner was OH's famous spag bol which was lovely but quite calorific!!! Day 8,first WI ----------- 12stone 3 lbs -------- 4lb loss.

First of all thanks to The Dragon who gave me the incentive to trim down a bit,and to everyone else for their (sometimes hilarious) input.
I do feel that if you try it in a group(albeit online),you do get more support, help, ideas and encouragement.
This 4lb is just really the "puppy fat" and the next four will be a lot harder, although there`s three weeks to get there.
I walk (briskly) for about 50 minutes a day and basically count the cals.
Good luck to everyone,I`m sure you`ll get there if you WANT to.

My home cooked spag. bol. is about 500 calories a person, since calorie counting exactly is too much of a chore to keep up forever getting it roughly right is good enough IMO.
42g pack of minstrels 211 calories, 80g fudge bar 110 calories.

Your doing a fair bit of excercise, I wonder if you burning through more than 2000 calories on a regular basis so my be need to set a daily calorie target a bit higher to be 500 under using proper food that will satisfy appetite to get there. Might help stop resorting to the sweet things.

Merange nests might be low cal. but it still teaches your head that you can just eat sweet things, weakens resolve when it come to resisting a packet of minstrels or whatever.
It's all in the mind.
Apparently 3500 calories = 1lb, something to think about when faced with chocolate :D

FairyShazza, well done the weigh in!!! :T Your menu for today sounds lovely, mmm. :D

alared, well done to you too, a 4lb loss is amazing!!!! :T

AdrianHi, good point on the meringues. I know they are still sugary and not good for you. But I think I need something to wean me off the chocolate and they are far lower in cals. It's a case of the least worst option I guess. But I do take your point. Thanks for the calorie estimate for the spag bol - I will try again with calorie counting and estimate anything I don't know. I'm not sure how many cals I'm burning, must check foodfocus and see what they say re walking. It does make me feel better if I burn off extra calories when I've overeaten, I feel like I'm regaining control or something.

WI was this morning and I am 132.4lbs (9st 6.4lbs) so have put on about half a pound this week... bummer!! That means I have eaten 1750 cals more than I should have over the week. :(

Have you ever tried fruit teas to satisfy the sweet thing craving?
Many flavours are aweful, but blackcurrant flavour works well for me, near zero calories

My weigh in day of the week this evening before dinner.
If I weigh myself first thing in the morning I can be as much as 3lbs lighter, but I started out with weighing myself evenings before dinner so will stick with it.
I'm not sure 0.5lb one way or the other is that significant.

AdrianHi - firstly, I really wish I could like fruit teas, but I hate them. They taste so metallic! I like herbal teas though, esp mint and camomile. Which type of blackcurrant tea do you drink?
I know half a pound is insignificant but it's the fact that I had to have a calorie surplus of 1750 calories to put it on is more pertinent. It is motivating me anyway!

Dragon, how are you feeling today?

I am awful, I had a lunchtime meeting where they didn't provide lunch, only biscuits!!! So I ate four as I was really hungry by 1pm! :( I will have to have a sensible dinner. Breakfast was fruit and a small low fat plain yogurt, so hopefully I haven't done too much damage...

Sainsbury's blackcurrant tea, manages to taste of fruit instead of chipboard / something else.
About the 0.5lb weight. Given it seems the body can vary 3lbs (or at least mine does) depending on time of day, it could just be a small variation due to that.
I'm not entirely convinced by 3500 calories = 1lb since it suggests you would loose 1lb a week on 500 a day below what you burn. I was loosing 2lb a week like this, now it has slowed to about 1lb a week now I've got less to loose. I think it helps to re-enforce the every calorie saved helps idea though.

Not being able to take lunch at the right time is a real killer, don't know the solution to that. I really want lunch by 12.45pm.

Well done on your 4lb loss Rainbowchild :)

I can't stand fruit teas either. I've tried them before but I just don't like the taste of them. I think I'm quite lucky that I don't have the snacking gene I think my area to try and work on is portion control. I cooked a stir fry last night and there was far too much really.

I've had my lunch which was lovely and am going to nibble on my melon pieces this afternoon, I don't think I'm going to need my apricots today after all.

Very stiff and sore today! I cancelled my hair appointment (only a dry, straight across the bottom trim and they were going to charge £12 for it so not that bothered actually!), I have managed to do two things (empty the laundry bag and put the clothes away AND zigzag round the fabric of the crewelwork kit I want to take away with me) - I plan to relax for the rest of the day - well apart from going out to dinner at the local with Dr Dragon and a good friend!

Dragon - hope your soreness goes away in time for your meal out tonight! And make sure you eat up! :D

AdrianHi- I will let it go about the 0.5lb, promise! :rotfl: It could have been a lot worse I suppose.

I'm now sitting eating what I had brought with me for my lunch before being called to that meeting. So I will have a very light dinner as I won't be ready for a big one. Luckily OH is out this evening so he won't be complaining about the lack of dinner at 6pm!

First weigh in and I've lost 2lb, but as I put on 1.5lb last week I still have 6.5lbs to clear before the end of the month; don't think the 2 twirl bars I've just eaten will help but they sure did taste nice!

Bit fed up today, no weight loss in 3 days now. And Im being so good.

We should make a thread rule, no weighing yourself more than once a week, when you do make it the same time of day. Stops any of those natural fluctuations and plateaus being on a high point at that moment you weigh yourself - causing discouragement.
Check out the graph on this success story and note that it is not a steady continuoues downward slope:
http://caloriecount.about.com/thinking-food-fuel-not-entertainment-b306445

Anyone want to suggest a weigh in day?
Wednesdays may be?

159lbs for me last night, 1lb lost in a week. Also weighed myself on Saturday, 4 days after last weigh in Wednesday, so no loss at all then.
Somehow doubt I will ever loose as much as 7lbs in a month again now but I'm OK with that.

Chin up :)

Grrrr got up late today so didn’t manage to make my lunch before I left for work so now I will be tied to whatever they are offering today in the school dining room, hopefully there will be something relatively healthy to choose.

Went to Aquafit last night and will be going again tonight, am either going to go swimming beforehand or do some work in the gym not sure which will depend on how I’m feeling later. Have passed on going out for dinner tonight as I’d rather go to the gym!

Weigh in day - 1lb off. Not great but I expected worse as I've had such a cr*p few weeks diet wise. The friend I go to WW with (started at the same time) hit her 1st target today, 2lb ahead of me, and I'm hoping that might have given me the impetus to really get back to it this week.

Tomorrow, day 8 and one week on, I plan to weigh myself for the first time.
I`ve already explained that I only do it once a week hoping to see a reduction, whereas to keep jumping on and off the scales every day and hardly seeing them move and some times going the wrong way,can be disheartening.

I agree with a weekly WI but basically it`s down the each person "to do their own thing".

hethmar

Yes, Im heartened by the fact I am wearing jeans that I last managed to squeeze into 3 years ago nearly - and they were TIGHT, I was scared to move too much in case they burst. They are now fitting loosely. I am going to think that I am losing fat but gaining muscle and that weighs more, hence the no loss.

Morning all I haven't been around for a few days either. I've been so slack with exercise this week it'll be some kind of miracle if I've lost anything this week. I also agree with the once-a-week weigh ins, for me I always weigh in on a Monday, as its the start of a new working week. Although I have my fancy new scales now, so its going to take a lot of willpower not to weigh myself and get stats every time I go the loo! :rotfl:

Went food shopping and bought lots of healthy fruit and veggies, and popped some meringue nests in my basket as well. Had mine with greek yoghurt and strawberries ooh yummy. A nice guilt free treat. Thanks Tara for putting the idea in my head. :D

Not much else to report...I now have an idea of my body fat, muscle and BMI etc so I'm going to monitor it and see what happens. There is a handy little USB stick on my scales so you can transfer all the data to comp and get graphs and tables and all sorts..its quite fabulous. My OH is going to monitor himself as well as its less than 8 weeks now til we're off on hols and we've still got lots to do.

Better do some work now I think

Have a lovely Friday all xxxxxxx

Yesterday was A Very Bad Day for me, I ate so much rubbish. Am I ever going to stay on track?

This weekend I'm away to Galway with OH, lots of eating and drinking but lots of walking too. We will walk out to Salthill every day and around the city for miles so hopefully that will burn some of it off. I'm just happy to be off for a few days!!

I'll be around most of today, then not back till Tuesday so keep the seat warm for me over the weekend!

Have a nice healthy weekend all xo

OK crazy weigh in story.
Wednesday night 8.30pm I weigh myself wearing just underwear, no shoes, 159lbs (11st 5lbs) as said earlier.
Last night I did the exact same again, same scales, same pattern of eating all day and it was 155lbs (11st 1lb)

I don't think ther is anything wrong with the scales, they are digital so not likely to go out of specification. I also don't beleive for a second I lost 4lbs of fat in 24 hours. The body does seem to vary quite a bit naturally for it's own reasons. Most likely there has been a steady drop towards the 155lb mark and something was going on Wednesday like some water rention or something, I don't know

Thats a lot more interesting than me :)

I had 1 oz of sugar free muesli and some semi skimmed milk for breakfast

I had 1 diet yoghurt for lunch oh and a banana

1 rich tea biscuit in afternoon with coffee

Just had a whole meal sandwich with ham and one teaspoonful of mango chutney.

Followed by (had calories to spare :)) 1 scoop vanilla icecream, 1 meringue nest, a bit of fat free natural yoghurt and 3 grapes.

:) I make that, say about 900 calories so far today? Woo hoo, bit of weight watchers cake (77 calories) with my coffee later then.

Weighed in this morning and I'm the same as last week. Dreaded totm is here again and I'm trying to ignore the pain. Have just done my yoga dance dvd and the cramps went away temporarily so exercise does relieve them I never actually believed that. My fancy new scales have told me that I am losing body fat and my BMI is going down even though my weight is the same, so its all good!

Big hugs for Poshstock - sorry to hear things aren't so well at home. I'm sure we've all been there with the comfort eating, well I know I have, now that I don't smoke anymore but its difficult enough losing weight without extra stresses. Keep your chin up chick

Hethmar - my scales show oz lost as well, its hard not to keep jumping on at various points during the day to see if I have lost anything. I'm going to be good this week though and not weigh myself until next Monday and hope I will be pleasantly surprised. :D

So I went out and bought the size 16 outfit and I forced myself to look in the mirror and it didnt look too bad at all (I could do with Gok with me). Up and down around the 11st 3lb to 11st 1lblast week, 11st 1lb today :T
Confident it means still going in the right direction.
Plan to loose another half stone at the most, puts my BMI at or just under the middle of the normal range.
I think it's going a bit slow and erratic for me as I don't really have much excess fat to loose now
