View Full Version : Perfume - just the one, or lots of choice?
Do you have one favourite scent that you wear every day for every occasion? Or do you have a few....or even as many as Selfridges' perfume department?
I'll start off the confession:
Armani - She - now worn everyday cos I think its gorgeous
Christian Dior - Dune - usually worn for evenings, smells of satsumas & reminds me of Christmas!
Christian Dior - Dolce Vita - light, used to be my everyday scent before the Calvin Klein
Calvin Klein - Truth - again a light scent, used to be an everyday perfume before the Armani took over!
To "support" these scents, I also have shower / bath gel in Dolce Vita, Dune & Truth, and body lotion for all 4.
Also, all 4 are kept in their original box on my dressing table (along with lots of clutter & dust!).
Before I settled on these I used to wear:
Aromatics by Clinique (reminded of this by Whatatwit!)
Amarige by Givenchy (stopped when I found out my ex-husband's new woman wore it ),
Glamorous by Ralph Lauren (was a 40th gift & was just too rich for me :o),
Anais Anais (my dad bought me my first bottle of this, when I was 17 :A), Paris by YSL (stopped when my ex-MiL decided she liked it & started wearing it! :p)
and the standard for girls of my generation - Charlie or Impulse spray when still at school! ;)
So come on....are you a single-scent poster or do you have a flurry of frgrances to choose from? :)

I'd have hundreds if I could. At present B Spot from Benefit, but have Prada, Sunflowers, Green Tea, Cerutti 1881, Armani White, Clinique Happy, Pleasures and tons of others in the cabinet.
I covet my next door neighbour's dressing table...over the last 15 years I have known her, she has collected practically every perfume she can. Her dressing table has a 3 foot extension shelf unit to store them in...if only my place had room to fit a dressing table in as well as a bed...(sigh)

XS Pour Elle
Christian Dior - Dune
Iceberg - Twice
Elizabeth Arden - Sunflowers
I have others but can't remeber their names off the top of my head!

I admit I am a complete perfume !!!!! but I started getting over run with lots of half used bottles so I told myself I wasn't allowed to buy any until I used some up. At the moment I've got
* Vera Wang Princess
* Calvin Klein Euphoria
* Kenzo Flower by Kenzo
* Rush by Gucci
so I think it's time for some new ones!
My all time favourite is Jean Paul Gaultier Classique - my bottle has just run out and I NEED to get some more.
Some other favourites include:
* Acqua Di Gio
* Paul Smith Rose
* Dior Addict II
I fancy getting a couple of perfumes I've not had before I really liked Vera Wang Rock Princess when I went in and smelt it at the weekend.
I think a treat might be in order on payday and my birthday is coming up so I might ask for some perfume as a present.

I've got 4 perfumes that I wear for various occasions.
Daytime/Work: Lacoste Touch of Pink (also have the deodorant and body lotion)
CK1 - the first perfume I ever had and still the best!!!
Night Time (non special occasions) : CK In2U
Special Occasions: Thierry Mugler Angel (this is used extremely sparingly as I cant afford to replace it when it runs out!!!!)
My first perfume was CK1, then Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Girl, (my mate still uses this and I still love the smell!!) I wore Cool Water for Women for years and years but now cant stand the smell of the stuff! Ultraviolet by Paco Rabanne - I only had one bottle of that then went off it!! Ted Baker for Women - I loved that stuff but then they changed it and I didnt like the new one so I stopped wearing it. I also love Vera Wang Princess - it was the first present OH bought me when we started going out! Will have to buy some more soon I think.

I do have a 100+ anyway. The idea of a signature fragrance was very in vogue for a long time. But then companies decided they wanted to sell more bottles and pushed the suit your mood. I get bored wearing the same one day in day out.
The perfume industry is in financial trouble, they release so many new fragrances each year a 100 plus believe it or not. But surveys have shown the most popular where released at least 5 years ago. So you wil find lots of celeb pushed ones and weak sellers disappearing.

Boots had a huge accidental sale last year on perfumes and I was able to stock up by spending all my points.
Gosh, there are loads above that I have never even heard of!
SJP - Lovely - for casual/ when I think about it wear.
Dior - Dune - as above
Dior - J'adore - for nights out which are so rare they are all special!
Used to wear Estee Lauder, Beautiful but have gone right off it.
DH bought me a bottle of Prada one Xmas but I'm not too keen as it's too heavy for me.
Going to have a sniff along the perfume counter next time I'm in town. This thread has reminded me I haven't done that for ages!

Gosh that's a lot of perfumes!!
I used to own about 5, but only really used one so i sold the ones i didn't like on ebay (and got close to what i paid for them). My fave atm is stella mcartney BUT i have just discovered that m&s do a perfume called 'sheer blush' and it is identical and only £12.
I use it everyday, then whe it's finished i will go shopping for a new one. My faves in the past have been ckin2u, ralph lauren romance, and prada.

Oh I’ve also got my own perfume that I had made. My husband bought me a perfume making experience as a present because he knows how much I love perfume. I went just before our wedding and I named my perfume “To Have and To Hold” it is even registered on the perfume registry.
For anyone who loves perfume I would really recommend going on a perfume making experience it was great fun and you get to make your very own scent that nobody else has and name it too :)

I'm generally a one perfume girl. I started out with Sunflower but didn't like it. Then I got Chloe narcisse, love it but now I'm older I can't wear it (too strong). I then moved onto Davidoff cool water. Now I have Vera wang princess. I only bought this a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I've been dithering about getting it for a year and they had the whole set for £38.49 in the perfume shop which was 50p cheaper than the 50ml bottle on its own!

Just the one here- "First" by Van Cleef and Arples.
I just love this but it is now getting very hard to find ( never was very easy) and I live in dread of it being discontinued.
I was wearing this the other night.
I love this site. Bought loads from here, especially Caron perfumes. Free shipping to the UK too.
http://www.fragrancex.com/products/_cid_perfume-am-lid_F-am-pid_403W__products.html
I have just bought Jai Ose body spray from them after previously purchasing the EDT from them. They are really good for quite obscure perfumes. But Guerlain, Chanel et al are no cheaper than over here.
Perfumes are my downfall. I must have about 50 many in their boxes in my wardrobe.
Edit: Anyone remember The Onedin Line from the 70s?
Just listening to the 'proper' version and have to share it with you all. It is simply beautiful music.

I love perfume, and have a few different bottles to suit how I feel.
My absolute favourite if I coud afford to buy it is Chanel no5, not the new Eau premiere version, the original. I'm only 22 but it suits me perfectly.
Of course being MSE that is out of the question for me, so I wear Delirium by Mango which is gorgeous. Got given a couple of tester bottles at my local Lloyds pahrmacy and got hooked.
I also own Charlie Red which I don't wear any more - I always wore this as a teenager but now I really don't like it but my brother tends to buy this for Christmas/Birthdays when he can't think of anything! :o
I also have a bottle of Kylie's Showtime fragrance which I bought for £4 at my local charity shop (Yes, my charity shop rocks!) which I wear on those days when I need a little pick-me-up early in the morning. It smells so different to my usual perfumes, it's almost a fizzy, sparkly scent.
My final perfume is Little Black Dress by Avon, such a classic smelling perfume but not many people seem to wear it so I tend to get compliments on that one a lot.

I had a major perfume clearout the other week and have now got it down to the three I loved most:
* Gwen Stefani L - 'work' perfume
* The Body Shop Vanilla - 'casual' perfume
* Marc Jacobs Daisy - 'special occasion' perfume
I'd have hundreds if I could but have said that I will only buy new ones when I run out of another one. I am one of those people who will spend hours wandering round the perfume department in fancy department stores just smelling them all, and have a wish list as long as my arm.

Perfume stored properly can keep for years. Keep in its box and out of sunlight and heat. Most of my stuff is in dressing table drawers, no clothes in there. In their boxes. My bottle of Fleurs de Rocaille parfum is from early 1960's, bought from ebay still in the box and sealed. It smells totally fresh and as it should.

BS Fantasy
BS Curious
BS Midnight Fantasy
BS Hidden Fantasy (See the pattern?)
Avons 007 Perfume
Harajuku Girl 'G'
Midnight Fantasy is my favourite, but I just use whichever one takes my fancy in the morning. Normally Hidden Fantasy.

Paul Smith - Floral (everyday)
Dior - Miss Dior Cherie (special occasions)
Chanel- No.5 (very special occasions)
Gwen Stefani - Lil' Angel (handbag neccessity!)
Not doing too badly, but it's nice to have some variety, I get through it really slowly though, unlike my sister who goes through more bottles than I ever though imaginable!

Just battered the bank account on some Hermes Jardin sur le Nil - after the top notes give you a bit of a slap in the face, the proper scent reminds me of fishing in a lily pond...not necessarily a criticism, especially for the angling fans out there, but I'm not convinced of the description of the Nile. Oh well, the scent is lovely and that's just marketing anyway....

This year I have enjoyed wearing Calvin Clein Euphoria. I also loved the Clarins Par Amour but that has been discontinued now.
I always have a bottle of the "original" Clarins Eau Dynamysante which is more a body fragrance but I love it and its plant based and makes you feel fresh and fragrant. I have a small bottle of the "blue" eau too and yesterday I treated myself to a large bottle of the Clarins Sunshine Fragrance which is gorgeous.
I seem to be moving towards lighter, fresher fragrances as I get older!! I find that some perfumes are too heavy and actually make me feel headachey.

My problem is that I never want to wear any scent which is highly fashionable and therefore instantly recognisable. I want my fragrance to be unique to me even though it's mass-produced. If I won the lottery I'd have a fragrance blended especially for me but as I haven't yet I wear the following:
Aromatics Elixir by Clinique for day-time wear. I get an unbelievable number of compliments about this scent and I'm always amazed at how few people recognise it.
Caleche by Hermes for evenings out. This has been my favourite for a couple of decades and I still really adore it.
Arpege by Lanvin for VERY, VERY special occasions. The old formulation, not the new one. I've been wearing this one for a really, really long time and it still fills me with joy every time I use it.
However, since having discovered the incredibly inexpensive smell-alikes on the Perfume-Parlour website I'm going to make a special trip to a department store's perfumery section and see if I can find a new favourite and buy a smell-alike in true MSE style. The Aromatics smell-alike is identical to the real one so I'm taking that as a really good sign.

I couldn't wear the same perfume all the time. I like different smells for different moods, or days, or weather. I don't like mainstream perfumes either, they are too strong and alcohol-y for me.
I currently have 25 (I think) different scents. A couple I'm going to sell because I don't like them so much anymore. A couple I really like. But most of them are samples I'm trying out because I haven't found the right set of scents that suit me yet.

I'm with bitterandtwisted in hating to smell ''fashionable''. However I did just pick up the Prada scent in duty free. It is delicious and very ''me'' smelling. I like floral, but not sweet perfume. I'll often mix scents to get the smell just right for me. I'd LOVE to be ble to have a scent or two mixed: similar bases, with seasonal/mood differences.
I'm lucky to have a dh who goes through duty free regularly. My f-i-l is also very kind and brings a bottle whenever he visits: sadly I usuallydon't like what he buys me. I wear it while he's round for visit then give the bottle to friends/neices as appropriate. I'd love to guide his choice, but it seems so rude and presumptious.

I'm obsessed with perfume. In no particular order:
Dior- Pure Poison (my signature scent apparently)
Dior- J'Adore
Anna Sui- Flight of Fancy (one of two "pulling perfumes"! Men love this :D)
Anna Sui- Sui Love (really summery)
Anna Sui- Secret Wish
Ghost- Sweetheart (the other pulling perfume- really vanilla-y)
Hugo- Pure Purple
Police- Wings
DKNY- Delicious Night
Paco Rabanne- Black XS
Can't wait until I start my new job, one of the orders of the day will be to treat myself to a new bottle of perfume! I also collect perfume bottles :D

I currently wear Lush Go Green or Honey I Washed The Kids solid perfumes.
Over the years I've also worn...
Lush Karma
Lush Ginger (it's discontinued now though :()
Dolma White Musk (love it and would buy it again)
Next Paradise (Estee Lauder Paradise smell-alike)
Clarins' Eau Dynamisante
Stella McCartney (a gift from an ex)
Demeter Cappucino (this was utterly gorgeous but I've not seen it anywhere in ages)
Body Shop White Musk, Dewberry, Activist(which was actually a mens' scent!) or Ananya were my High School scents, but I wouldn't buy from them again after the company was bought by L'oreal!

Hypnose - L'oreal I think
Ghost Original white bottle
Ghost Dark Moon shaped Bottle
Ghost Sweetheart
Gucci Envy
Armani Code
Worth
Yves St Laurent - Rive Gauche
Britney Spears - Fantasy
I love them all, but at the mo sweetheart is my fave summer scent
Angel by Thierry Mugler for special occasions
Britney Spears pink one
Britney Spears blue one
Yes, it's Britney Spears. But it smells lovely, and I get loads of compliments
My problem is that I never want to wear any scent which is highly fashionable and therefore instantly recognisable. I want my fragrance to be unique to me even though it's mass-produced. If I won the lottery I'd have a fragrance blended especially for me but as I haven't yet I wear the following:

My sister has done it for friends as a gift, but you can do it for yourself. They create a fragrance depending on your likes and dislikes. It's not that expensive, either

OMG...that's one of DD's perfumes
I stick to Happy Heart. I've got a couple of bottles of Happy that I should alternate with, but I love Happy Heart so much. I've also got a small bottle of Vivienne Westwood's Boudoir that I occasionally wear in the evening.

Just the one here- "First" by Van Cleef and Arples.
I just love this but it is now getting very hard to find ( never was very easy) and I live in dread of it being discontinued.
I still have a 'First' cake of soap with my son's baby teethmarks in it. He's now 25. :D

Lol hopefully she wont go out with the sort of scoundrels that I do :rotfl: That and Ghost are the ones that when men hug me most often get the "oh you smell so good" thing. Which I love :D and use to justify massive spending on perfume!

Been reading this thread! lol I thought I was bad with perfume hehe!
I usually wear estee lauder, pleasures or beautiful. I also love Kenzo flower, so alternating these at the min.
I also have in my collection, next flowers, cacharel loulou, dkny be delicious (which my dad said smelt like dettol lol!!), ralph lauren romance, ghost cherish, paris hilton (pink/black stripey bottle), kate moss, dkny for women, obsession night, obsession, eternity, eternity moment.
lol looks like loads when I type that out! I go off perfume tho and always return to estee lauder, pleasures. Its my alltime favourite. I used to wear coty mellow musk in my younger years and white musk from the body shop. I couldnt stand Dewberry! lol.
Have also wore acqua di gio, j'adore, giorgio beverley hills, paloma picasso, fendi and moschino couture and am sure there are more but I cant think of them at the min lol

I feel naked if I leave the house without perfume! I'm trying to cut back as (as we know) we can invest too much money in perfume without realising it :)
My current stock is
1. Flowerbomb Victor & Rolf
2. Cucumber Marc Jacobs
3. Daisy Marc Jacobs
4. Pleasures Delight Estee Lauder
5. A for Men Theirry Mugler
I love Coco Chanel Mademoiselle and Allure. Even buying perfume duty free is expensive so I'll work my way through my current stock or drop some seriously heavy hints (this usually means standing in front of the TV when Arsenal are playing with a big white board stating what I might like for my birthday) it has been known to work :rotfl:

I adore perfume and tend to try new ones often. I hate it when your nose gets used to a new perfume and you can no longer smell it!
Anyway, my 'signature scent' is Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, and my favourites are Sui Dreams by Anna Sui, Daisy by Marc Jacobs, Ricci by Nina Ricci and Princess by Vera Wang. Ready to find another to add another to my list!

My perfumes consist of:
Prada-nearly done
Chanel-Coco Mademoiselle nearly done
Jean Paul Gualtier(sp) (havent used this in a while)
Bristney Spears-Curious
Next-Signature (an exact match for Coco Mademoiselle-12 quid a bottle)
DKNY- tall red bottle not sure of the name- dont like it, reminds me of air freshener)
Ghost-normal
Ghost-pink (i think it is)
I need new perfume badly- my sister bought Vera Wang Princess and i really want it, or Ultrviolet-actually love this!

Who on here has a favourite perfume/aftershave they hardly use and save as it is one of your favourites but has loads of bottles nearly empty but refuse to use them as it would be a shame to see it go?
I did and am slowly using them all up as daily wear then I am off to Selfridges to treat myself to Tom Ford's Black Orchid mmmmmm

I use Chanel Allure on a daily basis, but also have
Jean Paul Gaultier Classic
Britney Spears - the first one in the blue bottle
Dior - Dolce Vita
Chanel Coco
YSL Elle
Guerlain L'Instant which I would wear every day if it wasnt for the fact that my boyfriend does not like it much.

My 'best' is chanel coco mademoisselle.
I sometimes use Allure or Chance.
My everyday is CK Euphoria.
I tried CKin2u but didn't like it.
I used to wear estee lauder beautiful but now find it too sweet.
I fancy trying Daisy Marc Jacobs but it doesn't seem too popular?

Awww I love this thread!
Currently
Princess by Vera Wang
Deep Red by Hugo Boss (which the BF hates, so I'm just using the last bit)
S by Escada
Ocean Lounge by Escada
Rougeberry by Body Shop
Red Delicious by DKNY
212 Sexy by Caroline Herrera
I used to wear Clinque Happy, but BF detests it; both he and I are missing Moon Sparkle by Escada - its getting to the point where I'm too scared to smell one of Escada's perfumes because I go and fall in love with the scent, then because its a 'limited edition' it disappears off the shelves :(
I know that I'm getting Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf for my birthday (which shows Im just plain spoilt)...

I wear Britney Spear's 'Curious' everyday - i did try Marc Jacobs 'Daisy' which i loved but DH hated it, he loves the britney one cos its what i wore on our first date and he associates it with me, as i do with his Lacoste scent.
For going out i wear Chanel, the Coco Mademoiselle one. DH buys me a bottle every Xmas :D

I adore perfume and tend to try new ones often. I hate it when your nose gets used to a new perfume and you can no longer smell it!
so do I - normally the people at work suffer for it - I'm not a daily perfume wearer, and I abhor (thought hate was a trifle strong!) people who bathe in the stuff, and those who also add layers by showering and moisturising in the stuff too.
It's downright anti social, imho,
boys and girls, please remember - your perfume or after shave should only be available to smell by those who are nuzzling you, not the whole flippin office.:p
If you have to wear so much it would cover up any other body odours, then please can't you just have a shower instead!:p For the singletons amongst you rememebr natural pheromones are the most effective perfume.

I have been known to hoard perfume, had a clear out recently and these are the ones I wear regularly -
Gucci - Rush and Rush 2
Dior - Poison
Jean Paul Gaultier - Fragile
Chanel - Coco Madmoiselle
Cacharel - Eden
I loved the smell of Gwen Stefani's "G", although I found that the scent didn't last.
Also, I loved Armani Sensi until they retired it :o(

Excellent thread :j I've normally got about 4 or 5 different bottles open at the same time. I usually get a few bottles of perfume for xmas etc so rarely buy myself perfume :money: I do have a big bottle of an Usher perfume that I won last year which is nice as well. I also like Gucci Envy, Lacoste Pink, Anna Sui and Philosophy perfumes that I've had in the past. I like most perfumes that I smell so am really not very fussy... :D

Wow GREAT thread!! I have, at the moment:
Ocean Dream by Giorgio Beverly Hills
Allure by Chanel
Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder
Hot Couture by Givenchy
Love Kenzo Flower. Really admire all of you with such unusual perfume finds. Where is a good place to shop for unusual perfumes?
Got a question someone might be able to help with: the Radox relaxing aromatherapy shower gel in the purple bottle with lavender and patchouli is absolutely gorgeous. Does anyone know if there are any similar perfumes to it? Sad I know, matching a fragrance to a shower gel, but I absolutely love it.

Oooh, you've hit on a weak spot here...
I always love things that get discontinued and then end up trying to buy them on eBay (e.g. Mukki by Fresh)
All time faves:
Chanel no.5
Samsara (Guerlain)
La Violette (Annick Goutal)
Elle - Armani
On the go at present- aim to use up by mid Sept as I've only got a little bit of each:
Lush 'The Comforter'
Lush 'Champagne Snow Showers'
Penhaligons 'Extract of Limes'
Stella 'In Two'
L'Occitane 'Cherry'
Only problem is, when I've used them up, what do I buy? I normally wear Stella McCartney in the Autumn/Winter but I've majorly fallen in love with a sample of Penhaligons 'Eau de Vervenie' - two problems - it only comes in 100ml bottles and its £95!!!

Ooh - I thought it was just me! I LOVE ghost deepest night (not the one that comes in a dark moon shape bottle - that's deep night). I was actually desperate enough to buy 20 samples from ebay and carefully pour them into a large atomiser. I use it very VERY sparingly!
