Hi, I've had quick look at the threads on the subject of the Govt's car scrappage scheme but can't see anything relating to my question. I hope someone can help. My little 14 year old Punto was hit by a bus a couple of weeks ago and is a write off. I'm not in a position to buy a new car but wondered... my car's obviously going to be scrapped so shouldn't the insurers of the bus company pay me the £2,000 scrappage allowance? Who's to say I wasn't going to buy a new car anyway? I'm sure I'll soon be told if this is a daft question but just thought I'd ask... cheers.

My MIL who has just done this was told by garage the car has to be roadworthy and taxed etc within 14 days of ordering new car so she tells me
She got 3k for her old rover for a Puegot 207

And the scrappage is applied once you buy a new car, they dont just hand over 2 bags of sand in cash!

It's not a silly question, and one that was raised in the Scrappage thread.
Unfortunately as above, the scrappage rules are clear. Must be a brand new car, not even pre-reg.
Therefore no reason for insurance companies to assume that every post-10 year old car is worth £2000.

You state in your post that you are not in the position to buy a new car, so on this basis you have no arguement with the bus company that they should pay you £2000.

I think they will only get what the actually price of the car is worth prior to crash
I missed the bus part, silly me

It's not the car thats worth 2K, it's buying a new car AND trading in the old one thats worth the 2k

Aww, thanks everyone for the replies, I knew it was a long shot, was speaking to friends/family about it and they got me thinking, which is why I thought I'd ask. I'm a bit gutted to be honest as a 14 yr old Punto isn't going to be worth a lot. It was a great wee car and I really relied on it so if I get peanuts for it, I'll be lucky to have enough to buy a pedal bike, lol!!! Ah well, that's life huh??
If it has an MOT surely it is still eligible for the scheme

OP you will be lucky to get £500
Being in the same position I was thinking along the same lines.
The damaged car may only be worth £500 but because it’s been damaged by a third party I am now can’t use it for the scrapage scheme.
If I had already ordered a new car under the scheme I think it’s relatively clear cut as it’s a direct and documented loss and the insurance company should pay.
Where it gets more difficult is if I haven’t actually ordered the new car but have now lost the ability to take part in the scheme because of the accident. How do I put a value on that loss?

You will find it very difficult to demonstrate that you have potentially lost out as you had not started to buy a new car. The chances of you succeeding are incredibly remote.
Nah, it’s very easy to show I have lost out. I was able to take part in the scheme, now I’m not and it’s the third parties fault.
The question is what value (if any) should be attached to this loss.

I dismanted my car before it got taken away and got £2000 from the scrappage scheme. Yes it has 4 wheels, and an engine, but not much else

Yes but you intended to use the scheme.
If you had read the thread you will see the OP has and had no intention of buying a new car. they just want 2k for a banger for no reason

Wait a minute, not quite relevant in this case since OP can't afford a new car. But OP has a car that has been deemed uneconomical to repair. Is it still driveable? If it is and say the light clusters are away at the back then it might be worth getting those repaired and maybe straighten out the body work a bit. Just a thought.
