The timing belt on my 1999 Clio just broke on my way home from work the other day. I have had it almost a year and i am sure that i was told by the garage (small local) that the timing belt had been replaced not long back. It has done a lot of damage ( broke 5 out of 8 pistons) and i think it will cost more than the car is worth to fix it. Just wondering if anyone could give me advice on what to do from here (fix/scrap?) and if i can go back to the garage i bought it from?

Many Thanks
Sarah

Big Clio with 8 Pistons...;) (think you mean valves!)

You certainly can't have any comeback against the place you bought it from.

You are talking hundreds to fix it but that may still be worthwhile if the car is otherwise sound. As it is it's worth very little.

Get a quote for repairs but it will be marginal at best. I doubt you can claim against garage

let that be a (harsh) lesson to you. when you buy a car, any car, get the belts done again. cant trust anyone!

On a 10 year old car not sure i would go down another engine route unless it was really, really cheap. You have old running gear, rust (?) problems and i imagine any new engine could be duff and you would probably have the cam belt to replace on that for peace of mind.

You are between a rock and a hard place I'm sorry to say OP.

I agree, You would be throwing money at a 10 year old car.

At this age the car could encounter more problems.

A never ending job.

8-900 for a belt change is well expensive.

Should be between 60 - 280 including labour?

Good Luck.
