Hi,
I have been sent a letter from the DVLA telling me to renew my photo Licence. The problem is that i dont have enough money (£20) to pay for this. After all my bills i dont have anything left?
The question is do i really have to pay for the renewal?
Thank you

Your photocard license will expire on the date noted. Unfortunately to not renew it means you will effectively be driving as if you did not have a license. This will cause you severe issues if/when stopped by the police, have an accident, or anything along those lines. This is a 'priority debt' in that respect!

and how much did you spend down the pub last month?
or even in the past ten years, because thats how long you've known about the expiry date.

It is free to change your address but that isnt renewing your license thats changing your address.
the only thing i can suggest is maybe asking a family memeber to lend you the money.
But yes you do have to pay for it and like mentioned before if you fail to renew it you will be driving without a valid Uk License and this will invlidate your insurance.
Hope you manage to get it sorted.

I don't like to sound harsh here, but if the OP can't scrape together £20 then really he has no business being a motorist. ;)
Fuel is £1 a litre, insurance will be between £150 and £1000 a year, then there is road tax, tyres, maintenance and an annual MOT test.
Motoring is not cheap and nor should it be done on the cheap. If money is that tight then it is possible the car could be badly maintained and uninsured. I have little time for the 'Junkpile Jockeys' who run a 'Heap on the Cheap' and endanger everyone else.
Maybe it's time to take the bus.

Exactly. It's a cheaper form of photo ID than a passport or those awful proposed national ID cards.
