I hate to point out the obvious, UNLIMITED FREE hazel nuts are widely available in many woodland areas throughout Britian.
Pick as many as you want August - November , and store in cool dry dark place - they will stay fresh all winter without any preserving.
(remember not to over do it though or the squirrels might linch you)

you got a map of them in Cheshire?
No I don't, but check out hedgerows and farm boundaries near wettish areas. Also try and get clues from local place names. Somewhere called "Hazel wood" or "Hazel Grove" for instance might shortcut the process.
Also keep your eyes open for yummy mushrooms.. best about Late August / September time. Take a good mushroom book and don't get poisened.

I wouldn't even consider going mushroom picking on my own...I'd only go with an established expert, despite the fact I love foraging; I go out for hazelnuts, bilberries, blackberries and even I know of some wild strawberries hidden in a hedgerow near my old house. :)

I went to Hazel Grove but all I found was a load of Mancunian nuts and a pub called the Jolly Roger - but then maybe Stockport was a bad idea! :-p
