Hi my Mercedes ML 350 is approaching the end of it's 3 year warranty period. Merc want £1500 to extend by a further year. I've had a few problems with it over the years - any thoughts anyone?

Not really up on extended warranties but that sounds awfully expensive for 1 year!
Maybe they know something you don't! Might be worth checking around but you have to read the fine print very very carefully. It might also be worth finding a MB forum and see what the experts there think is your best course of action.

Thank the dealer for their time, politely decline their offer, and inform them that you'll be taking the vehicle to an independent MB specialist for any future work.

Try getting a quote for an "all the options" (including using main dealer for repairs if you want to, it's extra) from Warranty Direct. If you play by their rules exactly they are dependable at paying up when they should.

Greenvales in Whitefield is who I use when I encounter a job too big to do myself. They're always chock-full of cars, old and new (I've seen plenty of classics in there).
They're located here:

They're a good garage, and the Metrolink is a 5 minute walk away, so easy to leave your car with them.
