Hi & Merry Christmas 2 U All

My partner is trying to get rid of her dandruff & has used all the usual ones: head & shoulders etc but I was wondering if anyone on this board could come up with a soulution or an idea to get rid of it.

Any sensible solutions & ideas welcome & will be tried out!

You can sometimes solve a dandruff prob by massaging in some baby oil and leaving overnight. (A bit like you do with babies when they have cradle cap). Protect your pillow with an old towel. The oil will loosen the flakes of dry skin and condition the scalp to reduce further flaking. Switch to a gentle shampoo and reduce the use of hair mousse and hair spray will also help. HTH

This isn't connected but thinking of anti dandruff shampoo: - If you colour your hair at home and it's gone a bit dark, shampoo in a good dollop of Anti Dandruff in, wrap hair in cling film and stick a hot towel on the top. Leave for 30mins or so and wash out. You may have to repeat a couple of times and it doesn't always work. But anti dandruff lifts permanent hair colour like nothing else. HTH

My 14 year old son and I both suffer with dandruff. The only thing we find that works is "Polytar". It smells a bit, although I like it, but it sure does work!

My hairdresser told me that Dandruff and itchy flaky scalp can be different things. Anti- dandruff shampoos contain chemicals and things to provent build up of bacteria (which makes dandruff worse), these additives can aggrivate an itchy, flaky scalp.

If she has tried anti- dandruff shampoos try something really gentle like johnsons baby shampoo, which isn't allowed to contain any strong perfumes, and try not to use any styling products for a bit !:o then reintroduce them one at a time incase one of them is causing it.

If that doesn't clear it up try the good old- style tradition of old- fashined VINEGAR (had to be in here somewhere didn't it !;D)
Another measure, which helps to counteract dandruff, is to dilute cider vinegar with an equal quantity of water and dab this on the hair with cotton wool in between shampooing. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps to disperse dandruff. Taken from This (http://www.allayurveda.com/ail_dandruff.htm) dandruff site.

I had an itchy scalp and since using baby shampoo, only using styling products when I go out (about as often as the olympic flame!!) and eating an old style diet (lots of good old fashioned home cooked food with more veg) It has cleared up.

something that encourages dandruff and itchy scalps is not rinsing properly, spend an extra few mins rinsing every bit of shampoo/conditioner out, and that's where the cider vinegar comes in as it clears away all the soap residue

I too suffer with ezcema in my scalp (and the soles of my feet!) & both my doctor & pharamacist have told me to use pharmacy quality anti-dandruff shampoo, which does seem to ease it. I tend to switch between Nizoral & Selsun, both of which are very expensive but a little goes a long way & it does ease it. I think Selsun is the more effective one but my scalp seems to adjust to it more quickly, hence why I have to switch around. I only use it once a week & use regualr shampoo any other time. I try not to wash my hair more than twice a week as this seems to make it worse.
You have to ask for both these shampoos at the pharmacy counter.
HTH ;)

May I suggest you confirm dandruff, rather than a sensitive/dry scalp, eczema, psoriasis, or anything else?

Of course, it may be distressing to have visible flakes, so symptomatic relief might be your immediate need.

If it helps, my fella complained of dandruff, and I persuaded him to stop using Vosene, and to try other shampoos, and his scalp is a lot better now. I would also recommend, if you can afford it, Lush's Snake Oil bar (for scalps).

It may take some time, and you may need to keep swapping shampoos/conditioners, even food, like dairy.

Please let us know how you get on!

Snake Oil - GOSH NO, NO SNAKES!!!!! They called it Snake Oil for some clever reason I don't remember. But Lush label all their products clearly so that vegetarians and vegans and people who care about what they use can shop with confidence.

This one is for your scalp. It's called Snake Oil for two reasons.

1) In times gone by if a travelling salesman had made all the claims we'd like to make for this bar he'd have made a million very easily.

2) It stops you shedding your skin (snake joke of average quality).

For those of you who haven't discovered Lush (http://www.lush.co.uk/system/index.html) yet, it is a wonderful place full of natural products that are good for your skin/hair/ body. I've never mentioned it on here because, unfortunatly it isn't so much money saving as money spending because everything is sooo nice :-/ Love the silly sense of humor of the company too (see quote above) My favorite product is Buffy the Backside slayer ;D Fantastic name and an excellent exfoliator/ moisturiser. I haven't found/ made anything better yet. If anyone has a 'recipe' for a Buffy I would be greatful (not to mention much richer, at £3.50 a pop it's expensive)

Just to point out I'm nothing to do with the company just a fan.

Thank goodness - I am toatlly petrified of the things! WIll try it though. I am bored of Head and Shoulders. Have fallen in love with Charles Worthington Shine On yellow shampoo (not for dandruff - just shiney lovelyness) but it is expensive. So keep it for special occassions! ;D

I've been trying to find natural ways to cleanse myself, given that soaps, shampoos, etc contain lots of unnatural chemicals that do get absorbed into the body etc.

Anyway, after much research on the Internet, I discovered
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV) - don't use any other type of vinegar.

ACV kills yeasts in your scalp. Works a treat for me (28 yo Male).
I use it every other day and have been doing so for months. No need to wash / rinse it out. The first time you use it, it may sting a bit...

It may smell a bit but actually not that badly at all, especially once it is dried and you've walked to the train/tube. Colleague who sits next to me at work never realised until I told him!

Also to prevent dandruff DRY YOUR SCALP after showering (I was guilty of this as well)!!!!! Leaving it wet only allows the yeast or whatever to recreate the right environment for snowy shoulders.

Obviously, the tips mentioned may not work for all, but it is tried and tested with me and thousands of people over the centuries and much better and much more natural than H&S or anyother haircare synthetic product that have only been around for 50 or so years.

A good balanced diet also helps. Garlic and perhaps ACV capsules (available from Holland and Barrett) are good for the diet/body as well.

ACV worked and still works wonders for my scalp is all I'll say....

I found that using diluted 'Dettol' (or Savlon or supermarket's own antiseptic disinfectant) on my hair helped when I had particularly stubborn dandruff. You apply it to the hair and scalp and leave for about half an hour before shampooing. It's an anti-bacterialcide and helps to get rid of any flakes and bacteria on the scalp.

I do find that using mousse on my hair too much/often can often cause flakes - not sure if they are dandruff or just dry flakiness - so I try not to use it too often.

Have you tried Zeal Anti-dandruff hair products?

Zeal is the most effective, gentle dandruff and psoriasis shampoo you will find. Zeal is an all natural, none medicated solutions to itching, flaking scalps.

Boots do an own brand dandruff medicine called Ketakonazole. You wash out any dandruff/yeast production and then use a normal, delicate soft shampoo say dove, or baby shampoo or the aloe vera head & shoulders. it needs to be done few times in week;
DH used to have bad dandruff for nearly 7years, until a friend suggested this. he done this for fews months and, then omitted the ketakonazole for few months and back to the routine again (for about a year). and he has not had any dandruff since - that was 5 years ago! hth.
