I signed up for the free trial of 30 days and cancelled at the end of that period. All dvd's had been returned well before cancellation but I was charged a months rental.
Now I thought i signed up for a free trial, but apparently the offer is, join screenselect and get the first month free! Why don't they advertise that as the offer rather than a free trial period. (yes I'm being sarcastic :p )
In addition to cancelling, at no point was I told I would be charged a months subscription for cancelling. So how do they get away with it?
btw has anyone got the email and telephone number for screenselect
Thanks in advance
P.S. Savings so far -£15 :(

Funny - I did the screenselect free trial a while back and they didn't charge me a penny when I cancelled in time. Contact them and give them what for!

You must make sure you cancel before they send you a dvd from your list and make sure that the last dvd you return gets to them (better use recorded), otherwise they will charge you again.

A lot of people have had the same and similar problems quitting this company - have a look at the thread in Shop but Don't Drop subforum.

I had a similar thing with the free Tesco dvd rental service.
NOTE TO ALL: YOU MUST CANCEL AND RETURN ALL DVDS ,SO THAT THEY ARE IN THE COMPANY'S POSSESSION, BEFORE THE END OF YOUR FREE PERIOD OR ELSE YOU WILL BE CHARGED.
Tesco kindly informed me this however, because their customer service wasn't exactly the best by any means, I haven't been charged (yet)
p.s. remember certain companies are owned under an umbrella company; for example, screen select and tesco are owned by the same company - this means that once you have undertaken a free trial with one of these companies, you can't then take up a new free trial with another in the same group.

I remember when i did this deal - The day before i was due to be charged they "appartly" hadn't recieved my dvd's back even though i left it for 5 days. I wrote a email saying that it is very likely that they have been recieved and its very convient when i was trying to quit. It quickly changed to recieved and i quit - no penny handed over!

I think the trick is to empty your list of dvd's just before you cancel so they cannot send you anymore after you send the last one back.

When you quit screen select cancel any direct debit at your bank, they may try to invoice you then but they won't be able to take the money out direct

I had a trial a while back and sent back the last dvds from the post office where I asked for a receipt to act as proof of posting.

I have had a free trial too, but not been charged anything. I also got proof of posting from the Post Office. However when I took out my free trial I was supposed to get a free Davina McCall workout DVD, but that hasn't arrived  so I'm going to write them a letter.

Personally I've found them lousy. Cancelled the free trial last month after they charged me (but I hadn't returned DVD in time so that was my fault). Confirmed cancellation by phone and deleted my details online as far as possible. They've continued for weeks to send me emails asking me to add titles to my list - requested this week that they stop these and they replied with a confirmation. Today I get an email asking for urgent payment as the direct debit has been refused - obviously because I cancelled it!! Aaargh...

I had no problems quitting screenselect or blockbuster who I've also tried. Cancelled with lovefilm yesterday after a trial and they offered buy 1 month get 2 free, which apparently ends today if it interests anyone!

Yes, I too have fallen into the late cancellation trap. I had made a note that I joined on the 23rd so I presumed that I had until the 22nd to cancel but no - when I went online to cancel -15th - thinking that I still had a few days I discovered that payment was going to be taken on the 16th! My fault for not checking this out but as my last one had been returned I thought that I might just be lucky! No they had posted one out, I hadn't received it but they would be taking payment anyway.
What I would like to know is:
Am I better cutting my losses now and cancelling or using up this months titles and risking cancelling nearer to the time?

When you quit screen select cancel any direct debit at your bank, they may try to invoice you then but they won't be able to take the money out direct
I've noticed a few people complaining that they have had money taken out at the end of various different trial subscription offers, my advice would be to use your banks online service, as soon as you see that the direct debit is set-up, delete it immediately.
You'll still get the trial as they won't notice until they try to take some money out, ie... the bank will not inform them.
