She called them out last week as there was something wrong with the car (I don't drive so don't know what it was). They said it was the starter motor, fitted a new one for £108 and then left, but the problems continued. She called in a reputable mechanic who said it wasn't the starter motor at all, it was something else and he would fix it.

Does she have any hope of getting her money back from the AA? Obviously they've disposed of the starter motor they took out and I think she probably won't get anywhere with them, but I thought I'd better ask anyway.

Write them a stern letter. If you have a copy of a report from your mechanic, enclose a copy.

The AA changed the headlamps in my friend's car (they'd both failed, and it was dark) ... a few months later it emerged they'd had no clue what they were doing with a smart car, and had failed to fit the lights properly. In addition, as a result of them not knowing what they were doing, some components hadn't been secured and had actually fallen out of the headlights at some point. (Her dipping mechanism didn't work at all)

She wrote a letter to the AA. They sent a cheque covering her repair costs reasonably swiftly, along with a letter saying that they hoped this 'would be an end to the matter'. Cheeky blighters ;-)

It never hurts to try and it sounds like you have a good case for a refund.

Thanks - I'll draft a letter for her.
