View Full Version : blackheads??
dont waste your money on expensive skin cleaners for blackheads and spots
a marvellous remover is
dab a bit of milk of manesia on the black head or all over your face with cotton wool for a really good face mask
and voila
lerrvely soft skin and no blackheads
I reckon you can read my mind. I use Clean & Clear and I was looking at the bottle this morning thinking, how can I save money on this ;D

nothing is better than those strips that you wet then place over your nose
the satisfaction/disgust seeing what sticks to the strip afterwards

Might have to try the milk of magnesia tip. I try to use decent products that are going to rid my face of blackheads forever, but they're expensive and don't work!
You will also need to exfoliate the blackhead areas on a regular basis to slough off the dead skin cells. I heard about the milk of magnesia trick too although i have never used it myself.

Me too I agree! a tip is a tip and useful to others and also money saving... This isn't the only comment like this from pennymakespounds, It's a shame that he/she has to feel this way. Just about all of this site is about money saving and OK there might be the odd one that stays from the subject a bit but some of it's in lighthearted fun and others coz it's become a friendly site and they might just post something they wouldnt normally as a one off. I don't see a problem with it the site is great and getting better everyday
This isn't the only comment like this from pennymakespounds, It's a shame that he/she has to feel this way.
At the time pennymakespounds made this comment it was the only one like it.

:) yes at the time this one was posted by moneymakespounds it was but I had read the other before reading this one so when I posted mine it wasnt. I don't suppose the time matters really
well. I posted so people would be able to save pounds on cleansers and use something cheap,
it seems that if someone then asks a question regarding the tip, there are others who object, but it takes all sorts doesnt it.
;D
and by the way
this IS in the money savings tips section
Well, I thought it was very useful. So ta ;D
Don't take it personally Cathy, there will sometimes be people with a comment to offer................which appear to criticise.
Please keep your helpful tips coming.

hey girls,,, you're being a bit harsh !!!.
it was some of the reply posts that you got that narked me , along with reading about dead cats and colours for painting walls.
I am a massive follower and supporter of martin and this site.
I read every post and am on board with all the saving ideas.
Don't see where my other posts have been negative.
Was also at the time i posted this following note regarding trying to push even harder for every one's benefit ....................
Martin, a few thoughts and comments about the site .. and for the future.
It has become massively successful and full credit to you for your efforts. I like many have saved £thousands and i reckon i'm with 99% of all best deals.
I read all postings on chat, checking about 3 times a day. Seems there has been a significant rise in posting numbers in the last month or so.
There is a danger of it becoming “too big” and losing some of its’ benefits ….
Eg….when a goodie is spotted and lots of people dive in to it ,,,, either sell out very quickly and / or supplier will suss the rush and may shut the door.
Eg….the more word spreads the more savvy the suppliers will become and think twice before offering something silly in the first instance. !!
The main point I wanted to put over was the discussion about “charitable donations”.
I do believe in charities and do make one specific donation each year rather than pennies here and there to anyone rattling a tin...i'm not being miserable !!
I think it’s an impossible task in your circumstances to do something really meaningful and tangible as there is no "one size fits all" way of doing it. I’d prefer to see you be able to make profits , and after rewarding yourself suitably , to then use any remaining monies .. to re-invest in the concept… specifically to either take on one or two people to assist you … or to pay a "consultancy fee" to specific members who can bring value to us all.
As time goes on and your own career develops and no doubt diversifies, it’s highly likely you will have less and less time available to do the “nitty gritty” , particularly the investigative side and I guess having “right hand” men/women or boys/girls would not only help you but have more time to dig deeper , which is what a lot of this is about. I’m sure there must be loads of young and enthusiastic, not expensive , people who could want to develop a career with you.
As far as using your exsisting followers , people like adam with his checker … could be developed into all sorts of things , his abilities are extremely valuable in all ways.
The “reestit” guy with his great price check site .. but understandably he seems to struggle to have the time to keep it up to date. It needs investment in time and money.
The mortgage and finance guys like payless and mortgage man … are a mine of knowledge … and knowledge is power !!
Your current idea of providing spreadsheets for certain things is absolutely spot on , can be massively beneficial .. but does need time and effort… and needs managing.
The varied .. and voluntary ..contributions by your audience is what the success of this site is all about but I feel it’s at a size that needs more control and management in order for it to continue developing.
“Buying” some of their time to help by providing specific investigations or reports (all totally unbiased of course) could have tremendous value. Having their input when you are putting together your guides etc must be beneficial.
Something like your big report on landline costs must have taken up a substantial number of hours . With the development of the 18866…1889….telestunt…tele2 .etc market .. we could do with an adam style checker ..or a spreadsheet.
Car insurance is another area where if there was more info on the permutations and options ….. house insurance could benefit from more digging into…. Etc etc.
In summary , invest some monies in buying additional hours of time or experience in order to get deeper into the important issues , undoubtedly the more complicated ones.
Do believe there would be a “ win win win” , as more moneysaving opportunities could be found.
AND I GOT 2 REPLIES ONLY !!!... thankfully one was from martin.

and back on topic...
A mild word of warning. This is something that happened to me when I tried to save money on skin products...
One day I had a spot on my cheek. I had heard that toothpaste is good for getting rid of spots... All you do is put a blob of toothpaste on the spot and leave it for a while.
So anyway, I went to the bathroom in my flat and squeezed a bit of toothpaste onto my finger and dabbed it onto the spot on my cheek.
Then I sat down at my computer and messed around and watched TV and stuff while the toothpaste did it's work.
After a while I began to feel hungry, so I went out to the Chinese take-away to get a Chinese meal.
Unfortunately, by then I had completely forgotten about the toothpaste on my face!!!
I ordered my chinese food and waited for it in the shop. I kept wondering why people were looking at me strangely. Then I caught my reflection in a mirror and saw the toothpaste there!
There was nothing I could do while I waited another 5 minutes for my food to be cooked. I just stood there, with toothpaste on my face, looking and feeling stupid! ;D

Oooh I am going to try this - I have bought very expensice clinique pore minimiser and its pants. Thanks for the tip!!! :)
It will really help me save some money - so yes this is a very helpful post. Cheers ;)
Cathy,
You are the bees knees, tried this last night and skin shows marked improvement with the Milk o Magnesia. I scrubbed my face first then put the MoM on, you didn't say how long to leave it so it stayed on all night. How does it work, does it just lift them out or have you got to start sqeeeeezing which is bad enough but under the eye area is pretty sore.
Keep up the excellent tips.
For those of you who find this disgusting then stop reading these posts, get yourselves on the Vent Board if that's your bag.
I usually leave it on overnight on my nose ! and wash off the next day. !but ive kept away from the eye area !
the skin around the eyes is very thin and porous so would soak anything up and you might get puffy eyes
glad it worked for you
as for the couple of negative comments, well, someone could put a post up saying
save £3 a gallon on petrol and I could say
petrol is that what this site is really about
it didnt make sense to me then and it still doesnt now
so I take not a jot of notice ;D ;D
its a lot cheaper for a bottle of MMag than a tenner for a bottle of clinique (if your lucky enough to find one for a tenner that is)
I seem to have missed the money saving tip pennymakes pounds had to make..
I will get a bottle of milk of magnesia for my daughter when I go shopping.
Does she need to squeeze at all, or do I get the pleasure?

Oh this thread got a bit heavy! :(
I think that before people (and I'm talking in general here) get worked up they need to sit down and think about what was said, perhaps even ask them what they meant by their post! Its arguments like this that put new users off the site!

Hi,
Watching a beauty programme this a.m and a tip was given to gently wash your face with Fullers earth after you come out of the shower/bath and that also keeps your face blackhead free.
Fullers earth can be purchased from a chemist.
Would be interested if anyone else has tried this.
If it does work this would also save a fortune as Fullers earth doesn't cost much. :)
I used to use fullers earth a lot as a face pack when I was a teenager
it was good
must get some

I used to use fuller's earth in my teens aswell - such a long time ago, I'd almost forgotten!
I think we also used to grind brewers yeast tablets and make into a paste with warm water and then slather it on and leave until dried. If you could bear the smell of it!
Cathy, I'd love to know, how did you find out about the milk of magnesia? Did you have a little too much excess one night, take some milk of magnesia, miss your mouth and end up with beautiful blackhead free skin in the morning? ;D ;D ;D ;D

I use an 'asprin mask' when i feel i need a bit of a scrub up! Just crush some asprins (cheap generic ones) up and mix with some kind of carrier to make a paste - i use honey or face cleanser, and leave on. Asprin is a form of salicylic acid which is used in acne medications etc. to break down blackheads.
I looked into whether i could somehow absorb the asprin through my skin but apparently it's really common to use them in this way, and you don't, and anyway I only use about 4!
When I don't have the time for that i just mix a bit of bicarb into my usual cleanser as a scrub!

What a great thread, I have always had terrible blackheads especially all over my nose (yuk) and have tried all sorts and was about to splash out on some expensive stuff to have another go, but thanks to you guys I am off to try the MoM right now and will also try the other tips too. I think I will just do one side of my nose tonight to compare in the morning (weird - probably!!!)

Me too jo101 - I have really open pored skin and so my nose in particular always looks speckled - something that would at least break them down and pull out the dirt would be great as nothing really works
Ewwww, I sounddirty, but open pores are a nightmare. Does anyone have any OS tips for dealing with them?

I have always had loads of blackheads
on my face tried all sorts.
Until the strips came out
I got the Loreal ones,it took about four goes
over the space of about 5 weeks. All gone
I have kept a couple of boxes and when
ever i get the odd one I open one of the packs up
cut a patch big enough to cover it and
get rid of it.Its amazing what those
strips take away.

When i read this thread this morning i remembered that on another site I sometimes go on (where I found out about the asprin masks) the people on there had been talking about making their own pore strips... so i just checked!
It's american, this other site, and the recipe is 1 teaspoon unflavoured gelatin and 1 teaspoon milk. Mix and microwave for 10 secs to slightly warm (i'd just use warm water in a bowl or something since we don't have a microwave). Apply to nose and chin and allow to dry, the mixture will harden to a 'film', peel off and gunk should come with it.
On the site they were discussing how they do the asprin mask FOLLOWED by pore strips and the amazing results they were getting... but i haven't tried the pore strips at all so maybe anyone who is brave enough should try a little patch first!!
I find that the asprin mask, as well as getting rid of the blackheads, really takes the 'redness' out of any pimples (which I tend to get at that TOM) and heals them really fast. The asprin stays quite gritty, so as well as disolving the bh's it acts as a scrub as well).
If anyone IS brave enough to experiment, let us know how it goes!!!

How many times did you use it before noticing a big difference??? I couldn't find any until yesterday but tried some out of date Maalox last week:eek: ...I figured out if you swallowed it, it wouldn't kill me to put it on my face and it did contain magnesium something or other which I figured was the important ingredient!!!
I only left it on half an hour while I had a bath and it seemed to bring some tough ones to the surface so I could squeeze 'em easier but didn't ELIMINATE them as such. I am looking forward to using the proper stuff now:D and smelling minty instead of lemony.

Peppermint fumes can be quite strong so see how strong your teabags are before putting them on your face. I once put a drop toomuch peppermint essential oil in the ice water I was using to soak a cloth for my headache, and I ended up with streaming eyes!

Is cream of magnesia the same as milk of...? It's all i could find in boots.
It says the active ingredients are: Light magnesium oxide 5.98% w/v, Magnesium Sulphate 0.075% w/v, also contains chloroform.
Will i be safe slapping that stuff on my face, or is it a lot stronger than milk of magnesia? If ppl could reply before tonight, i would be eternally grateful as i'm desperate to try this stuff out!!

I found this on a website, looks as though cream of magnesia is the generic name, so should be the same thing. I'm at work so can't check the ingredients on my bottle for you to be sure.

nothing is better than those strips that you wet then place over your nose
Duck tape's a good alternative. Just be careful when you peel it off, so you don't take skin with it!

Yes, it's the same stuff. Would probably be sensible to use it in a well-ventilated room until it's dry, as it does smell quite strongly of choloform - don't want to keel over!

I'm becoming so OS without even realising it! I popped into Sainsburys on my way home (I wouldn't normally shop there as it is too expensive but wanted to see if they had any reduced bread - and they did!)
Anyhoo..........went to pick up a bottle of MoM and it was £3.15. And my eyebrow went up and I was like Phooey! Sure I can find it cheaper somewhere else and I didnt put it in my basket
I am grinning because I would never have noticed the price before and would never have shopped around for something like that - oh I love OS I do.
Now, don't suppose anyone knows where I can get it cheaper than that, do they? :D

I bought mine today in boots for £2.69. Likewise i would normally go to Superdrug or somewhere cheaper, but i was in heels and my feet hurt too much to walk further!!:rotfl:

How do you manage to get a thick coating of MoM on? On my son's face I tried patting it on using a wad of paper towel without much success. I then tried patting it on using cotton wool and it was a bit better, but it still went on thin and patchy. Any ideas?

Went to get Milk of Magnesia today and it's £1 off at Tesco! £2.15 instead of £3.15!
Can afford to do the chin as well as the nose now ;)
Not the Tesco's near me. :(
Never mind, this MoM works a treat, thanks! Its so much cheaper than buying Clean and Clear. Had just finished a bottle of that and was looking for a cheap alternative.

I noticed a difference after the first time I used it. But after 3 or 4 times there was a huge improvement.

Hi well i was very pleased to see this thread but am now not sure what to buy MOM, duck tape, asprin, farmers whatever lol..do you think if we load it all on together we will have model like skin lol.
Another tip as i asked this on another site a few days ago was to put PVA glue on, i got some and have tried it for 2 days now..looks like it's done some good and peels off nicely like a mask...makes skin sooo smooth aswell so theres anoother one to add to the list!!

These tips are the best yet.
I'm defo off to buy some MoM for me and the other half. We are now on rigorous beauty regimes for our wedding in July and if this works my h2b will be relieved that I wont be 'faffing' with him.
He's even put in my valentines card that he loves except for when I'm picking at his skin!

Quinoderm cream is the BEST thing for spots! £2.21 a tube - it's quite harsh, but available in 3 strengths. Get it over the counter from your pharmacist
22yr old male here, and have always had blackheads on my nose, plus they make it quite greasy (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww :D )
Got some out but pores remained open, will try this tonight with some MoM and the gf's makeup removal pads used to apply the MoM.
Will report back :T

well i tried the mom route, i found it did make the blackheads disappear a bit, but i think it's cause the pores are now cloged, with mom on top of the blackhead now.
it made my face a bit dry as well
