I am having a denture made to replace a broken front top tooth and the dentist has filed down my own teeth below it to stop them biting the denture is this normal practice?

No.
Depending on what's going on, it might be necessary, but it's certainly not normal.
Usually all alternatives should be discussed and rejected before perfectly good tooth substance is sacrificed.

Not done as a general rule, however if your bite was extreme such that a denture could not be put in, or you could not bite together with the denture in-. then smoothing some teeth down can be done- however not for all cases.
If your natural teeth.

IMO, if it is a planned part of the treatment (occasionally for implants I understand) then its ok. If it's a last ditch attempt to not perforate something, then no.

Do you mean the teeth that bite against the denture in the opposite jaw (this would be extremely unusual) or do you mean teeth which are covered by the denture (It is perfectly normal to file down teeth if it is an overdenture that is being made.) Sorry, but the OP is not entirely clear to me.

Thanks for the replies, it was the lower teeth that bite against the denture that he took a fraction off as they was biting into the plate when i closed my back teeth.
