ok really not sure where is best to post this so feel free to move it onto a more appropriate place if ive got it wrong!

for anyone who bakes bread or uses yeast for anything ASDA i have found out today are inclined to give it away for free in handful sized lumps to people who ask nicely at their instore bakeries and apparently to those who can prove they are teachers (and i guess therefore using it with their pupils) company policy is to give a full packet (bakery sized packet) to them for free.
giving it to everyone isnt company policy but is policy of at least one bakery manager that i know of the teacher bit ive been told is company wide policy
hope this helps someone its certainly going to come in handy for me!

I believe they do this at tesco too.I don't think you have to be a teacher.

I asked politely at the bakery in my local Asda in Beckton and was told to look for a packet in aisle 17.

BTW, I'm somewhat addicted to my breadmaker.

I asked for it once in Asdas and they queried what I was gonna use it for.
But they did give me some.

theres been a thread on this before and i think it said that it's company policy because you are able to test if the yeast they are using is fresh that day in their bread. so if this is true then you dont have to be a teacher to get yeast from bakery! good luck!

Chap I worked with used to make his own beer and regularly popped into the local (national) brewery for his yeast.

I was once a Tesco manager in Hereford and to hand out yeast was common practise

Just thought I'll have my say as well.

I haven't tried Asda and there is none close buy, but I always get my yeast from Tesco (and I am no teacher). Last time I got about 100 grams!!! You can also get in Sainsburys, although they charge you (I think it was something like 36p, can't remember exactly anymore). I tried to ask in Morrisons and they told me that they don't sell or give away fresh yeast. You just have to ask in bakery section and most shops will give to you.
