You are ok to drive it up until the 15th of the following month as long as you have applied for it, its backdated anyway

who has told you this? it might be understood that a 'blind eye' might be taken for 14 days as it is always back dated, but it isnt a rule or set down in law. the law is, whether your tax is applied for or not, you cant use your car on public roads if it doesnt display a current tax disc.
i really need to use my car i cant get around without it anyone know how long it takes for them to get back to you they just sent me a form to sign and i havent heard anything. im not evern sure what im wating for now  i would just go and pay for road tax my self but why should i pay £80 for 6 months tax when i should be exempt. omg this is turning into a knightmare now i dont know what to do :o

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).

Are you applying for the DLA 404 exemption certificate?
The DLA can take around 4 weeks to issue them, ring them and see how long they advise it will be (tel no is 08457 123 456) - it's absolutely nothing to do with the DVLA.
Legally you must now pay for the road tax to drive/keep the vehicle on the road. You won't be able to do this now til tomorrow at a Post Office (which will be the quickest option, as if you did it online or by phone you'd still have to wait for the disc to come through post) but at least if you pay for it then you are legal to drive.
Your other option is to keep vehicle off road til the DLA 404 comes through.
If you buy the disc then when your DLA 404 comes through you can get the free disc at Post Office and apply for refund on remaining period left on paid for disc using form V14, hopefully you will only lose out on a month's tax then. If you can afford it then buy a 12month disc as you pay extra 10% admin cost on a 6 month disc which is not refundable.

Oh no you're not!
The only exemption is when an application has already been made and paid for before the end of the month either online or via phone since the tax has then been 'issued'.
In that circumstance you are allowed to drive for up to 5 days after the end of the month without displaying a valid tax disc.

Sorry my mistake, 14 days
What About The 14 Days Grace?
If your vehicle licence has expired there is an understanding that you may continue to use the vehicle for up to 14 days. However you must apply for a new licence within the 14 day period and licence it from the expiry date of the previous licence. If proof that a complete application has been received at DVLNI, before taking a vehicle on the road, you will not be penalised for driving without a current Vehicle Licence or for failing to display one.
The 14 days period of grace is a concession. In law a current licence must be displayed at all times when the vehicle is on the road.

I find it a lot easier and more reliable to renew the Road Fund Licence online.

That only applies in Northern Ireland! The clue is the term DVLNI. Driving & Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland. So unless the OP is in NI then it does not apply.
In the mainland (GB) you cannot drive/keep a vehicle on the public highway without it displaying a valid tax disc unless:
1. You have applied in advance of the expiry date of the last disc by phone/online/trackable post method. Then you get 5 working days to drive the vehicle whilst you wait for the disc to come through post.
2. You are driving to a pre-booked MOT test (and are insured)
3. You are driving to a pre-booked VIC test (and are insured)
In GB there is a 14 day concession to PURCHASE the tax disc after the expiry date but during this time the vehicle must be kept off road:
If you intend to renew your vehicle tax you should do so before your current tax disc expires. However, this is not always possible if you’re waiting for insurance or are getting an MOT for your vehicle etc.
You’ll be committing an offence if you use or keep your vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc. If you cannot obtain a tax disc, you must remove your vehicle off the road.
While your vehicle is off the road, you have 14 days in which to obtain a tax disc or make a SORN.

It IS easier but I worry about the future of our smaller post offices when they lose yet another form of income.

The OP doesn't pay for their tax disc - they get it free because of the rate of DLA that they're on ;)

Correct, but only if theirs (DVLA) and the MID systems are up to date! If your VED, insurance & MOT, or any combination, expire at around the same time there's no chance! Even if the vehicle is completely road legal it's not possible.

I have just found that the MID database takes a few days to update. Being trying to tax online for 5 days and eventually it went through today. And the insurance docs needless to say arrived this morning too.

If you only posted it a week ago then there's a high chance they haven't even got it in the dealing office yet especially if it was the Blackpool office, they receive 1/3 of a million letters a week and it can take 7-10 working days just to reach the office from when you posted it... Then it sits in a massive pile of requests as they are all dealt with in date order. Eventually some one will come to your request and process it
When it does come, do keep an eye on the expiry date. It is up to you to request a replacement in plenty of time. Additionally, do not lose it. It is a valuable piece of paper! Replacement will take even longer than your neone
