Bought new car but no good, can i claim back the tax?

Hi i bought a new car but have decided it is no good so want to sell it it has 8 months road tax on it someone has told me i cannot claim the tax back unless the car is in my name as i said have just bought and not sent the registration document off yet as seller just gave it to me and i dont see the point in sending it off now i want to sell it so does anyone know this is true about the road tax.

You shouldn't have the V5c the seller is meant to send it to the DVLA.

Is the hassle of selling the car with no tax worth the £100 or so you'll get back?

Do you think i will get more money for the car with the tax? I was trying to get back as much as possible. Cant someone who wants to buy the car just tax it themsleves?

As of 1st January 2009 you are only able to claim back unused road tax if the V5 is in your name. As a previous poster has said the V5 should have been sent back by the seller.

My advice would be to leave the tax on the car and sell it as it is as many buyers are put off if they have to spend any more money.

If you could reclaim car tax for a car not registered to you, broken windscreens would be the norm up & down the country.

If the car was in your name, you could claim back any full unused month. So if you were able to try to reclaim it on Monday, you'd have lost February anyway. IMHO, you're far better off selling with the tax- when the car registered to you. Otherwise, most buyers will be hugely offput.

What do you mean by a lot of fuel? Unless you got a real baragin you are going to take a caning if you sell it now.

Have you thought about having it serviced and keeping it a bit longer to see what it really will cost you month by month?

Anything 2 litre and auto will use more petrol generally. It's not exactly a small practical car. What year is it? Personally, I like Fords. I may buy it from you if its a steal....... :D

how many miles per gallon does it do? What sort of driving are you doing? (around town, long distance motorways, etc)
