how far can you park away from the pavement. normally i park next to it but have suffered from a broken door mirror and scratches in the past

You mean scratches from the pavement side? Well if you park too far from the pavement they will give you a ticket for obstruction.

I'd say don't be more than 10 inches away. You might be able to fold your mirror back. Or park somewhere else.

scratches from pesky kids running their toys etc along the side. door mirror does not fold.
