Hi, tlc...that allotment is expensive...mine is only £17.75 per year and we usually save seed to use next year. I am a vegetarian and am self sufficient in fruit and veg...well not bananas! I make all my own jams, chutneys and relishes too so it is a real money saver.

hi sashacat... it was free for the first year as uncultivated. dont know your location but that is a real bargain. i m in the london area so that may explain the higher price, though there is higher out there.

Wilkinsons currently have seeds on BOGOF and I've seen on here somewhere that Lidls are selling them pretty cheap too - not quite free but thought I'd mention it.

Thats NETTO selling seeds for 19p. Lidl do sell cheap seeds, but mine hasn't any in yet (yesterday)

May I suggest keeping an eye on local newspapers, which advertise events like seed swaps, which may get you some freebies.

I have just had a £5 voucher and an offer for 2 free packets from Thompson and Morgan (I have ordered before, but not this year yet).

Some of the magazines offer free seeds and bulbs, for postage - check out the front covers in the newsagents.

Make friends with other gardeners - will probably get you loads of free cuttings or divisions!

Join a local gardening society - this may cost you a small annual subscription, I pay £1 a year for mine. There are monthly meetings with speakers, free. Our society also runs a trading hut on the allotment site, and this gives very big discounts. The best place to find a gardening society is from the Clubs and Societies News page in most local newspapers.

Also watch the local papers for things like greenhouses...people often want rid of them and will give them to you for free if you take them away...several people on my lottie site have done that. We have a little hut on the site where all the seeds/ potatoes/onion sets/ compost are cost price plus a very small mark up.
Also people on allotments often plant too many seeds of each plant and will give you seedlings they have over...ask around on your allotment
