Peugeot 407 estate 2005....any advice?

Thinking about buying a 55 plate Peugeot 407 estate. Never had one of these....anyone had/got one and any useful advice please??

I'd check if it will fit your drive/garage. Huge they are!

I run a '56 407 as my company car. Had the car since May 08 and have covered 35000 miles so far with nothing bad to report. Car was ex Avis rental car bought from a main dealer at half its new price. Go for the 2.0 ltr diesel if you do the mileage - the engine is superb and even at speeds slightly above what they should be, returns 45-50 mpg. Drove from Glasgow to Kent, non stop (apart from convenience breaks) and felt as right as rain when I got there. Good level of extras like climate control, cruise etc make long distance driving a doddle. I looked at Mondeos, Lagunas & vectras but the 'Pug' came out on top.

Do you actually NEED an estate?

'Cos if you do, make sure you check out just how much space this car HAS NOT got!!

All the glass areas, blacked out, are concealing intrusions into the vehicle, espacially the load areas.

I do think they look good, especially n white.

Harvey will be along in a minute, to tell you all the interior falls to bits & the electrics will get stuffed up, after a few years & that if you buy a low powered diesel, or smaller petrol engine, you'll not be saving much, as it'll work harder to get you where your going!!

Erm yeah........................ Don't get one! They are useless as an estate car and will cost a fortune when it goes wrong...

No actually, they are ok to drive with the wafty 2.0 136bhp engine, but they might aswell be called a small hatch back.

Probably the best reasonable priced family size Estate would be either Focus, Astra or Megane. I tried all three side by side a couple of years ago.

Focus- nice, fair equipment, good engine choice but 1k more expensive than the others.

Astra- old and dated, boring inside and just too much like VX of old

Megane- best spec for the money, different enough, more load space than the others, not ugly like the megane hatch, superb small diesel engines.

All cars were 1 year old.

Yes I did go with the Renault and it has been superb, so for me was the right car.;)

Which is why I got the megane estate, it has 250mm longer wheel base/rear seat space than the hatch and more load space than the Laguna. An under estimated load carrier provided you are not too anti french;)

Disagree about the unconfortable seats - I have ran Mondeos, BMW 3 Series, Vectras and Passats and I find, for me, that the 407 is one of the most comfortable. I regularly cover over 400 miles in a day and still feel refreshed - when I used to do that in the Passat I felt wasted.

Not the biggest estate, agreed, but they come under the 'sports wagen' class - if you want a huge boot then Vectra, Mondeo or Passat it will need to be. Second hand, they represent excellent value and with 19000 mile servicing intervals you are not shelling out every few months on servicing.

As far as being dull to drive, it does not go like my Boxster but has great mid range power but it is the 2.0 ltr diesel I drive.

This is the only estate car that can carry a 6 foot harp. I only know this as I sold a Megane estate to a odd bloke who lived near Chester. He didn't want a Vectra or Mondeo sized car as they were too heavy on insurance for his nerdy needs.

I'd chose a Megane over a Laguna as they are decent cars. As decent as a French car can get...
