Hi

I have been reading recently about the benefits of body brushing..seems to be an effective way of detoxing, keeping skin healthy and toxin free.

Also a MS technique avoiding buying scrubs and exfoliators (albeit the initial cost of a brush.)

I bought a cactus body brush from the body shop today and tried it out...oooh ouch!!

Any tips/advice or am I just being lulled into yet another hyped up detox method?

thanks

p.s the brush label says it can be used dry or wet, not sure what's better, less painful!

Cactus brush sounds painful!! A softer brush would work just as well.

Body brushing is a great idea because it stimulates the circulatory system, and speeds up the flow of lymph, thus ridding the body of toxins. Just remember that your brush strokes should be towards the heart i.e up the legs, up the arms etc.

However, dry brushing is not really a substitute for exfoliation. You can make your own exfoliator using a half and half mix of vegetable oil and sugar, the oil will of course moisturise your skin at the same time. (Any old cheap veg oil will do and you could add a few drops of essential oil to make it smell yummy).

If you feel that the oil/sugar option is too messy a rough(ish)bath mit, or loofah works well for exfoliating, whilst a well-soaped pumice stone is good for elbows, knees and feet. You can buy all of these from the £1 shop, Superdrug or Wilkinsons.
