My dd has just had her very first period (awwwwww) and I was stumped what to buy her as I use Tampax.
Our local Asda had some especially for Teens but they are still very wide.
Can anyone recommend a narrower one (that doesnt look like a nappy to her!)
cheers

The green pack of Always Ultra without the wings is probably your best solution. They are more like a panty liner than a sanitary towel, so are thin and discreet yet give fantastic protection.

I think you can get mini size tampons that should fit her fine, if she'd prefer to use those

occasionally aways do them with a free little storage tin - if you see these at any point it would certainly be worth getting a few. when your daughter open her bag at school to get her books out if anyone sees the tin it looks nice and discreet and a bit like a small eyeshadow pallet tin.

As a nurse who used to work in Family planning, smears etc I would advise against starting a 12 year old on tampons. There is growing evidence to show irritation/sensetivity of the cervix which can lead to problems later in life, plus there is the added risk of introducing e.coli/thrush into the vagina if hygiene isn't 100% (ie bugs left on the perineal skin after defaecation if not able to wash straight afterwards). Besides this it's a big ask of a 12 year old coming to terms with major changes in the body.

The PoGo pack (http://www.pogopack.co.uk/) has been mentioned elsewhere, definitely worth getting one of those!
If her flow is light enough, would she get away with panti liners?

Hi my 11 year old had her first period on boxing day.We got her bodyform in the pink packet they are very thin yet really absorbant (she seemed really heavy for a first period) .She s been fine with these but it could be a case of trial and error for you s .
The info we found said not to use tampons at all .

Wilkinsons used to do a pack for smaller girls too- we had the same problem with our eldest (still only a size 6 at 18). I'd advise against tampons too- at 12, remembering to take them out could mean TSS was an issue- along with the stuff already mentioned.
Hope you find something suitable.

I think that when anyone starts their period tampon use is a big step. I would try linners for days towards the end of period. like savi sue said.
When your daughter is ready for tampons remember the risk of toxic shock syndrom when using tampons. Information on this TSS is printed on the instructions but are always forgotten when the intructions are no longer needed.
Only know about this (TSS) as DH is anti-tampon as ex gf sister had it and nearly died. Hate to scare her but just thought I would share this information.
Good luck with the moods!

As above really, DD is 14 and had periods for 2 years. She has managed well with bodyform/always 'wings' variety and a night time pad for extra reassurance at night. She's very sporty and these new slimline pads have coped well.

Thanks for all the answers - I dont like the idea of tampons at all for this age - will try some of the ideas given! I suppose its just trial and error to find the right kind.....I loved the Pogo bag but at £15 I thought it quite dear!

you can get a small make up bag or pencil case that she could use to keep in her school bag just in case she comes on when not expecting it and for keeping painkillers if needed, cheaper than the pogo bag.

It's down to the girl in questions personal choice really, I & all of my friends used tampons from the start, none ever had problems at all, that's not to say people don't have problems with them but tampons are so much easier & more convenient. I think if I had periods now i'd try this moon cup I keep hearing about but I don't so that's good!
I say give her a choice of both & she'll decide what's right for her.

Well, I would look at the websites for all the towel brands you can think of, I'd be surprised if they didn't nearly all have freebies / information packs you could send off for to get a range of things to try.
And yes, any small make-up bag will do, one your DD likes would be best. I also have the tin which was free with some towels not long ago, and various pouches and plastic holders I've accumulated over the years. On the whole though I prefer a make-up bag, it absolutely doesn't look like something that has my towels in it, whereas another girl might recognise the tin for what it was.
