Last night some teenage vandals ripped off our rear windscreen wiper including the arm  do we have to get it repaired straight away or is it legal to drive without it for a while as we are skint until the 25th??

Cheers for any help
John

You still have cars on the road that don't have rear windscreen wipers at all so I would say it was perfectly legal.

I think you will find that if they are fitted they have to be working, same goes for indicators as they are both included in an MOT test

as i said.....see here

http://www.ukmot.com/next.asp?ID=52

If you have an MOT test guy that says he will pass it then make sure you use him because others certainly wont if they are following the rules. Hope it goes ok for you.

I've moved this thread to the Motoring Board :)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).

just phoned a mechanic for advice and he told me that rear wipers are a luxary item and are not covered on MOT tests therefor I should be ok leaving it till the end of this month.

another question is... What the hell is wrong with teenagers these days, there just seems to be no deterrent and they just go around doing things like this with only a slight telling off to fear.

You forgot to add how hopeless the so called Police are! This is the source of courage and audacity for these youths. I cannot heap all the blame on their parents as the law seems to protect these vandals on most occasion.
I actually gripped a vandal and started shaking him, no punch, no hitting, just pure powerful shaking so he can come back to his senses.
My action was instinctive as i had suffered vandalism twice and the Police couldnt help. The 3rd time, i set a bobby trap and caught him red handed.
Guess what, when the old bill arrived, they attempted to arrest me as they claimed my grip and shaking can be classed as some kind of assault.
By the time i finished firing verbal bullets at the officers, they changed their mind instantly..
The good news is that the vandalism never re-occured. But pls dont copy my style for 2 reasons, the vandal may ve a knife which seems to be the trend this days and the Police might indeed nick u cos they re bored and luv nicking victims!!

all i can say is, its time to find out where these people live and give them a taste of their own medicine.... its the only way they will learn.

The police are trapped in a system of target meeting. It's so that local newspaper headlines cans be "crime detection has improved by 23.34% this year" or whatever, regardless of whether it provides a good service to the public.

I'd replace it immediately, its there for a reason. Without it you'll struggle to see behind you on a motorway or similar when raining.

funny how we managed to last for years without them... in fact, out of nearly twenty cars I've had over the last twenty five years, only the Volvo estate, Lada estate, Astra and Cortina had them....

yip, i have one but i dont like using it, i hate the mark it leaves on the window, even when washed and cleaned with glass cleaner there will always be that half moon shape on the back window when it rains.

use the wing mirrors op. they work just aswell.

I think its down to design like a lot of things these days.

I had a Ford Escort many years ago the one with the small lip on the boot whatever model it was ( 1980 s) that had no rear screen wipe but due to the design the rear screen was always completely clear.
Then bought a Ford Fiesta XR2 ( :D ) now that car you had to have the rear screen wiper on all the flamin time

My everyday car is a modern Clio, and I use rear wash wipe a lot. My "bit of fun" car is a drop head TR7 with a plastic back window, so obviously no wiper :o I find myself wiping it down every time I use the car. Yes, I use mirrors as well, but I do miss the added view.

That is because the aerodynamic shape of those vehicles, which are all tail opening or hatchbacks, requires them.

You'll never see a car with a boot with a rear wiper. They're not required.

My 1991 BMW saloon has no rear wipers. I can usually see out of the back quite well, or I use the side mirrors.
