Having a baby shortly , and have a 2 door clio. Want to buy a new car , I have 2k and will take 1 k on credit.

What do you think of this one:

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/msn/CARS_popup.jsp?modelexact=1&partner=msn&lid=search_used_cars_full&make=MAZDA&model=ANY&variant=&keywords=&min_pr=500&max_pr=4000&mileage=6&agerange=2&photo=1&postcode=mk89du&miles=30&max_records=200&source=0&sort=3&ukcarsearch_full=FIND+IT+NOW!&start=8&distance=25&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200851325712576

I could get it for about 3.5k which is at the top of my budget.

Hi rammster,
My daughter got herself a Citroen Picasso. Good to drive, easy access now with the bump and later with some shopping ,plenty of space for buggies and she doesn't have to bend too much to lift the baby into the baby seat. Check how many turn up outside junior schools or nurseries. Not just her opinion obviously !
Good luck for the future.

Hiya, you have so many choices for that type of money and age. It all depends on what other than a big boot you are looking for. Examples I have found for 3-3.5k with under 50k on the clock are:
Peugeot 307 Diesel (05)
Renault Megane Scenic Petrol/Diesel (05)
Citreon Picasso (05) Petrol
Citroen C4 (55) Petrol
Renault Laguna Diesel (55)
Fiat Punto (55)

The list goes on!!! Admittedly you will get lots of toys on the Mazda (e.g. Cruise control), but you could get a newer car for your money...

The choice is yours!!!

I'm not a car expert but I would suggest something smaller than 2l to save on running costs.

what if its a heavy car and the 2.0 is underpowered? a lot of cars with bigger engines can be more efficient than smaler engines in the same car.

what is wrong with the clio? it's often easier to get babies into their car seats if you have a two door car and the front seat folds right up, you can then get the baby in from the front rather than via the side which you have to do in a 4 door car?

I have had both 2 and 4 door cars and when they are babies it was much easier in a two door car IMO, I had a little honda civic and it was fab even with it's limited boot space

if you still want to get a bigger car then I can highly recommend a pug 307, nice and roomy with loads of boot space

The Mazda 6 has awful seats and you'll have no end of back ache! Get a Mondeo or Accord.

Bit obvious just looking at the list there as to why they are cheaper.....

Madza's are nice, parts can be be pricey tho. What about a Corolla? They do tend to hold their price and could be out of your range.

Honda's are good. Vauxhall Astra? Ford Focus? Mondeo? Just avoid french and Fiat.... ;)

I, along with many other folk in the motor trade don't really like Nissan's or Toyota's cos they are extreeeeeeeeeeemly dull to drive. Had a go of an Almera Sport a while ago and it was far from sporty lol.

But they don't go wrong, which is always a plus...

If I wanted a sports car, I would buy a sports car. If I want a reliable family car with comfy seats, a good safety rating, and a big boot, im happy with what I have.

I hired a 08 Renault Scenic the other day. Drove it 10 hours from one end of Ireland and back again in one day. As much as I dislike French cars, the Scenic was great. Lovely to drive, really comfortable for everyone, plenty of space for all 6 of us (there are 7 seats) and luggage. Was good on fuel, too.

Would I buy one? No, because I'd worry what would become of it in a few years time. Great when new though!

Citroen for example are coming in reliability above vw ford audi etc

when you consider how much cheaper they are they may seem like a better purchase

Ive always had citroen on peugoet and have had no problems other than wear and tear

many of these have been taken to over 200k

However i am currently trying to reject a brand new golf as it has been totally awful. I find it funny how citroen and peugeot come above vw in reliability but people are happy to ignore this

Is it me, or does the grammar grate on you too?

I've read the whole thread - and if the 'lady' wants a reliable vehicle that will last a couple of years or so, avoid your list! :D

Does anyone else find this incessant bashing of French cars tiresome? I've had 4 French cars over the years and none have been any less reliable than the fords or vauxhall i've had.

Yes I do, after years of owning only VX/VW we now have an extended family owning VW/BMW but mainly Renault.

There is nothing so far, and thats 5 or 6 years, to suggest any generic issues with the Renaults we've owned

Yes completely, my parents had several renaults and citroens, and never a problem. i have had 4 performance Peugeots and they were all reliable and excellent drives, cheap to insure and run.... never an issue
