It may be low gearbox oil - can you get a friendly local garage to look at it?

Yes i could, i just wanted to have some idea what the problem may be as i been ripped off big time earlier this year when i took car in to have breaks changed then they said i been putting screen water into to break fluid:mad: so £50 bill went up to £140. I wont go back to that garage tho.

Always worth having a good mechanic that you can trust.

I stumbled upon my garage by accident and have been with them for over 18 years.

My mechanic retired to spain last year.

Im going to ask my friends hubby where he takes his car also may ask coulple of neighbours who got older cars like mine, no use asking my b/f as he get cars from new and services them at proper dealers, he dont fiddle with cars.

My son had a similar problem, he had to select reverse to get 1st gear and it was very clunky to select any gear, turned out to be the gearbox linkage. He had the AA parts and labour warranty so only cost him the excess, £25. I believe the job was around £175 but good as new now. It seems to be a common fault on Corsas. the linkages on corsas are a common problem, easy to fix though

there is another thread on here recently about a corsa not going into gear, the linkages had worn before but the op had another problem which to me sounded like a linkage had snapped or came. its not been updated though.
