Hi i need some advice for my dh please. He has had an appointment arrive today for his vasectomy on tuesday. We are wondering if he will have a test after the procedure to check there is no sperm being produced. Thanks!

There is a test done but not immediately. Not sure how long but it is in weeks rather than days.

From the little that I know... I am sure that there are at least two checks to ensure that the procedure is a success!!

I am not sure of the time scale but you do have to still take precautions after the op for some time - they should give you all the info when you go.

Good luck to your DH!

The doctor should explain all of this if he hasn't done so already.

I think the rule is protected sex until the second test after the op

My hubby was back driving his waggon the day after, but i know 2 men who went to bed for a week to ` get over it` !

My DH vaguely remembers it being approximately six weeks after the op that he had the final sperm count test done. He just had to drop a sample off at the hospital within an hour or so of ejaculating (he was given a sample jar to take home) and he then received the results a week or so later.

Make sure your DH obeys all the rules about not doing anything physical for the first few days after the op, including driving, it really can make a huge difference to recovery. Also, a bag of frozen peas is a very, very good soother. We actually used frozen sweetcorn because neither of us eats it so we knew we wouldn't mix up the pain-killer bag with the eating bag :).

My dh had one test 6 weeks after the op and another 12 weeks after the first one. He was fine and only took the afternoon he was having the op off work. He said it didn't hurt at all but that could be because I didn't really want him to have it done  But I have to say now that 3 children were definitely enough - they most certainly get more expensive as they get older

My OH had his vasectomy last May, but we had to wait until October for the results of his 2nd test until we had the all clear.

One of my best friends didn't wait until the 2nd test, and fell pregnant inbetween! Make sure you use protection before getting the all clear.

After the op, and the numbness has worn off, my OH did have quite a bit of pain, but his procedure had taken longer than normal, and the doctor carrying it out said it wasn't as straight forward because his 'tubes' were rather short.

Make sure you have some paracetamol and ibuprofen in for him. OH was fine after a day or so, and just took it easy for about 2/3 days, but said it felt like he'd been severely kicked in the kn@ckers for a few days! I've given birth 3 times and had 1 caesar, so he didn't get much sympathy!
