View Full Version : UPDATED ultimate cosmetics
We have all shared tips on make-up here & I've tried things & loved them & others & not been so keen.
My makeup bag has had an overhaul courtesy of MSE.
I'm now using/testing.........
Primer
Gosh primer, its OK. I'm not sure these make loads of difference. Also got the Benefit Dr feelgood one. Must try smashbox photo finish, anyone use that?
Don't bother with this for work.
Foundation
No.7 intelligent colour for work (great budget buy)
Perscriptives for other (great luxury buy)
Powder
No.7 loose powder for work (great budget buy)
Laura Mercier (great luxury buy)
Will probably just buy the Elemental beauty matt mineral powder when I run out of these & its cheap.
Under eye brightener
Elemental Beauty - bright eyes (fab & cheap)
Don't bother with this for work.
Concealer
Elemental beauty - powder healing concealer (cheap & magic!)
Don't bother with this for work.
Blushers & Bronzers
Using Benefit-Dallas, Revlon Colourstay, Gurelain & Laura Geller. Will only buy Laura Geller in future (LOVE THEM).
Eyeshadows
Using Body shop & Laura Geller, will stick with just Laura Geller in future.
Don't bother with eyeshadow for work, just brush over some bronzer.
Mascaras,
still searching for the ultimate:( :( :( Bourjoise clubbing in waterproof is good, Revlon Colourstay ok. Tried Lancome, Estee Lauder, Clarins, Dior, Chanel, Benefit etc etc.
Haven't tried YSL, (anyone used this?) bought a Max Factor one off ebay that sounds promising, will be road testing shortly, its called...."max factor false lash effect waterproof mascara" Love the name, its what I'm after:rolleyes:
My mascara MUST be super waterproof, otherwise I get lots of smudging above & below my eyes (especially below).
Eyeliner
Colurstay liquid eyeliner, really like this.
Eyebrows
No.7 eyebrow pencil & benefit eyebrow make-up are my favs & coloursport (bit like a felt tip)
Lipsticks,
I use all sorts. Like the Maybeline ones especially
Eyelash curlers
Only one Shu Uemura!
Brushes
I have Ruby & Millie, Estee Lauder & No.7 (No.7 are great).
What have you learnt from the tips on here?:D

Have missed you MrsE :smileyhea
I've glanced at your list - what I have learnt so far, is that you have a ton of stuff!!
Someone mentioned smashbox eyeliner the other day - wonder if its like a pen? Pencils drag the old flesh ..... :o I've never heard of smashbox but then I don't get out much .. :D

Me more than anyone........ :o
Finding the EB eye shadow making a damn good eyeliner! Also good for inner eye lid too. I am love their eye shadows - but have to be careful as I got some all over my face last weekend and ended up with dark patches and streaks across face. No idea how long I looked like that before I noticed :o :o
Re mascara - I've always been partial to Maybelline, but like you, I find smudges, whatever brand I use.

I have the same problem with mascaras too, I neeed super waterproof ones. For day Ruby & Millie works for me (became a convert after getting a freebie).
For night time it has to be Lancome Hypnose waterproof - I find that really does not budge.
Worst mascara - Benefit Bad Gal. Unfortunately not waterproof and I had panda eyes befoe the night was half way through.

I've tried photofinish primer and it's not very good to be honest...

Benefit bad gal is fantastic, makes them look like falsies, BUT like you it runs all down my face:o
I'm fairly sure I've tried Hypnose & wasn't crazy on it, good but not great.
Will try Ruby & Millie (gotta be one of the few I haven't tried:rolleyes: ) thanks for the tip;)
Also I like a traditional bristle brush, not these funny plastic spikes:eek:

Foundation:
Bare Essential Mineral Foundation (I use the Elemental Beauty one as a budget option but do prefer BE)
Concealer:
YSL Touche Eclat or Benefit Boing (which is probably better than YSL!)
Powder:
Elemental Beauty Matt
Bronzer:
Bare Essentials Warmth (ok it came with the first foundation I got and will probably last me the next ten years my pale skin uses so little!)
Blusher:
No 7 and Benefit Thrrrob, Benetint and Posietint are ok
Highlighter:
Benefit High Beam
Mascara:
Max Factor False Lash Effect
Eyeshadow:
No 7 from 3 4 2s mainly although most brands are fine. Have a very nice Clinique trio and am lusting after a Dior one but they arent worth the difference in price.
Lip Balm:
Badger lip balm I got in a Xmas set last year although the Molton Brown lip balm for men is quite nice too.
Nail Polish:
Nails Inc
Perfume:
I'm slightly ashamed to admit to how many different perfumes I own but this week I'm mostly wearing Chanel Coco Mademoiselle

For mascara that doesn't budge, I can highly recommend Estee Lauder Double Wear, it's great (as is the double wear light foundation).

Tried it, it smudges on me.
Got the DW liquid liner too, thats ok.
I've also got the DW foundation normal & I don't like it, I find it too heavy, I've not tried the DW light one though.
I really don't believe ANY MAKE is better at foundations than Perscriptives, they colour match perfectly.
Went shopping today (Bluewater) & got YSL mascara & Perscriptives new here-to-stay mascara.
So two new ones to test.

I'm a bit mad........ :D as you know... I always like a mascara towards the end of its life. When it is new, it kinda needs 'breaking in'.
Meanwhile, I await the findings in your research MrsE ... :D it'll save me some money for one........

Foundation - Estee lauder double wear powder for bad days, Double Wear liquid mixed with spotlight highlighter for night time and the fab Lidl liquid make up (about £2) for every day
Powder - Rimmell stay matt - just a light application
Blusher - bourjois - the best ever
Bronzer - St tropez
Eyeliner - Clinique cream shaper for eyes
Mascara - Estee Lauder magnascopic - my desert island product, not waterproof but lasts really really well with a false lash effect, daughter wears Estee Lauder Double wear mascara, this does not budge and she rides horses everyday even in the rain
Lip gloss - always juicy tubes or if I fancy a change Barbara Daly at Tesco

Ooh, Mrs E, which YSL mascara did you get? I'm just the same- I definitely don't rub my eyes (contact lenses), but do sometimes end up a little Alice Cooper after an evening out.
I was toying with getting the YSL Faux Cils (or False Lash if you're not being pretentious), but it's not waterproof. There are lots of rave reviews on the web if you go looking. I'm currently using Lancome Flex (which I think has been discontinued) which has been pretty good. best brush is Bobbi Brown. Unfortunately the mascara was PANTs!!
Please let us know, you could make my Christmas!

I'll have to check mine and see what it says - as I say, it was a magazine freebie so it might have been discontinued. If it isn't waterproof, it's pretty darn good!
It's a pity about the Benefit Bad Gal, because it does give fantastic lashes.
I've got a mini Revlon Colourstay that I haven't tried yet - will give that a go.
Keep us updated on the Max Factor one - hopefully it'll live up to its claims.

Its just the YSL waterproof one, BUT it has the same brush as faux cils (I like the old fashioned brushes).
I got my DD the faux cils (non-waterproof) as a little stocking filler & the Urban Retreat perfume in the really funky bottle with the puffer.

Aw love his cotton socks. Its a b*gger when you lose a pet - I still get wound up over my doggies. Miss them big time. Hate being dogless. I would love another one or two - but working full time, its not fair to get one.

Haven't "opened" the YSL one. The Perscriptives one is nice, stays on well, comes off easily (with the OCM) BUT doesn't make them long & thick like falsies, but is pretty good concidering they are not falsies:rolleyes:
I want Benefits Bad Gal in waterproof:confused:
And they don't make it:mad:
Max Factor, I HATED the brush. I like a traditional brush, I hate those plasticky ones.

Just to report DD loves her YSL faux cils, I don't think much of my YSL waterproof version:(
Don't like the max factor one either, one of them funny brushes, sort of.
The PERSCRIPTIVES here to stay is PDG, not false lash looking, but lasts well & removes easily.

I currently use;
Foundation - YSL, the new one with the brush that's meant to be like touche eclat. I like it but I am a foundation tart and flit between brands every time I buy a new one.
Under eyes - Touche Eclat. Have worn this every day of my life for the last 10 years (since I was 13!) even when I was in Africa and hadn't washed my hair for 2 weeks.
Eyeshadow - clinique
Eyeliner - benefit "baked" or something like that, which you put a bit of water on then apply with a brush. It comes in a compact with a mirror and a black and a brown colour. I am a convert.
Powder - Dior
Blusher - either dior blush or mac in flower power.
Mascara - Dior Blackout. I absolutely love it and after 10 years of going from brand to brand with mascaras of all kinds, I have found one I am going to stick to.
Lip gloss - either juicy tubes for day time or a new YSL one in a pen like touche eclat for night time.
Don't wear bronzer, concealer, primer, or lipstick

well, dare i start..... hope the old man dont read this.... lol
i use bobbi brown water based foundation, is great
loreal beauty tubes mascara, stays put, looks great and comes off easily with warm water.
i use maybeline eyeshadow in seashell
and a rimmel lippy...
tried benefit dandelion blusher, was ok ish.... love lilly lilo wakiki
tried dior mascara - was pants, brush to bulky and mascara smudged.
i also use benefit bo ing, and lemon aid, is great for a quick cover up to nip to local shop on a sunday.
i love dior eye make up remover, really shifts stuff, but beauty tubes really is best removed with warm water.
as for perfume, well my favourite is Alien by tierry mugler, followed by pure poison, dior, and the light blue by d&G

Noooo! It's great! The bulky brush is the best bit, makes my eyelashes really thick, and it gets loads on at once so I don't have to put 20 coats on like I do with other mascaras!

Having read through some long posts on the forum about makeup etc & wanting to try to save a bit of money, I've started purchasing some of the cheap brands to give them a trial.....see how I get on.
One thing in particular has caught my eye though - a tip regarding smashbox primer. Apparently Lanacane anti chafing gel has almost the same ingredients list but is dead cheap and works the same as the smashbox primer...Anyone else actually tried this out yet and had good results with it? I've been on the lookout for some, but gather I might have to ask for it at a chemist.

The Smashbox primer blocked my pores terribly, I won't bother again, very over-rated IMHO.

I haven't tried it myself but I know that the Monistat version that they sell in the US gets great love all over the web and its the same as the Lanacane. Can't hurt to just try it. Think i might actually have a tube lying around here somewhere from the summer.

Looks like you can get a free sample of the Lanacane gel (http://www.lanacane.co.uk/)havent done it myself yet, so can't say how long it takes but worth trying.
