Brother's car was hit by another car and is now at the body repair garage awaiting assessment. The road tax is to expire end of this month. Have a feeling they will write the car off. I have advised him not to renew road tax but to apply for SORN. From my understanding he has to get a form from post office. Can this be done online? Any other advice i need to know?

Thanks

you can tick a box on the tax renewal form when it comes through or do it on line

Don't Bother with the = Ghost Office, Do it Online it takes less than 3 minutes.

I taxed my car in October it took 3 minutes.

He has 4 ways of doing it:

1. Online at http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ by using the 16 digit reference no on his reminder (V11) form, or the 11 digit document refernce number from Section 1 of his V5C Registration Certificate (logbook)

2. By phone - 0870 850 4444 by using one of the reference numbers mentioned above.

3. At Post Office with the reminder (V11) form - tick the SORN box and PO will scan it to update (or he can post it to the PO address on form)

4. By picking up a SORN form V890 from PO or downloading from www.direct.gov.uk/motoringforms (http://www.direct.gov.uk/motoringforms) and posting to DVLA

However, if his tax expires end of November, then he has up to the 14th Decemeber to inform DVLA without receiving any penalty. So if the vehicle is to be written off in next 2weeks then he can just hold fire at moment, and when notified by insurance compnay that it is being written off, he can return Section 9 of his logbook (yellow in colour) to DVLA to notify that he no longer has vehicle. As long as this is posted before Dec 14th then he has no need to SORN.

Hope that helps

2. By phone - 0870 850 4444 by using one of the reference numbers mentioned above.

Use 01792 782341, not the 0870 rip off number.
