I bought a car on 4/11/08 and its developed a fault. Should i take it back to the car sales or just get the problem diagnosed (at £50) and then get it repaired? I've managed to save about 1/3 of the cost of other cars this age with some mighty fine hagglin but now i'm wondering if this is the reason why and if i should get the repair sorted and whatever i pay jsut knock off the money i thought i had saved?? Also its the toxic fume warning light coming on which is the fault so any suggestions regarding this too please.

Any advice greatly received.

Btw when i spoke to my mechanic he said if the car sales won't do anything approach my Credit Card provider under section 75 and reclaim the money back.

Perhaps if you gave us just a little information?

Like Make and model. What you paid. What the fault appears to be?

Its an 03 Renault Scenic 1.6. £2100. The Toxic fume warning light is flashing but not had it diagnosed yet.

Your first stop has to be the trader you bought it from.

Does your handbook give any clue to the fault (probably just says 'take it to your friendly Renault dealer')?

Given that you say you have saved about £1000 by haggling you might well spend £50 getting an independent diagnosis to give you 'ammunition' with the dealer.

I suspect that some of the people on this board will be able to make a good guess at the problem from your description.

Yep the handbook does say that i've booked a diagnostic for tomorrow and hopefully the trader will be answering his phone on wednesday when i tell him what the problem is. Googling has brought all sorts up of problems up so if anyone does have any ideas they'll be greatly received :D

Our 04 Megane Toxic warning light came on, and it was a coil pack which had failed, a very common problem with the Megane.

If you have AA cover, give them a call they provide Renault Assist and will have a set of coil packs in the van :)

I don't think you should be paying/getting anyone to look at it until you have given the supplying garage the opportunity to rectify the fault. They could refuse to pay any bills you give them, if they haven't had the chance to sort it.

I agree

Why get it diagnosed by someone else before you ask the seller?

Why get it diagnosed at your expense? Take it back to the dealer and give them chance.
It'll be a coil pack cos they fail left, right and centre and you can get new sets for about 50 quid tops.

Mountain and Moll Hill come to mind...

it depends if you got a warrenty of the seller - im not being nasty or anything but it really is buyer beware -maybe the seller knew there were problems and thats why you got the 1000 knocked off
