Hi

2-3 weeks back we had a flat battery on our rover 416 (p reg). It was jumped a couple of times and the we changed the battery and all seemed fine. All was fine until yesterday, when my boyfriend broke down in the car on the motorway. Whilst he was driving the head lights started flickering and he managed to pull over before they went off. After a while he didn't even have enough juice to run the hazard lights.

We got the car 'recovered' home but it was too late to call a garage. The lady from the breakdown service says she reckons it's the alernator (which seems to be the general consensus). Anyway my boyfriend has been calling local garages today. Everyone seems to be busy until after Christmas apart from one place round the corner. They have said we will have to pay £35 for it to be picked up and £45 (!) for a diagnostic check. This cost for the check seems a lot to me. And that's before we've even got anything fixed. Does this seem unreasonable? If it is the alternator any idea how much are we looking at it to get it fixed?

Thanks for reading my saga!
