View Full Version : Can I use Tip-ex on the V5?

Slightly unusual situation here!

I've just purchased a car from a friend - he bought it himself only a few days ago, but circumstances mean he now has to move away.

I have the V5, and the Green slip that is part of the V5 - but they both have his details written in under the 'new owner' bit, ready for sending to the DVLA.

Now, as he is also leaving his home - and I need to tax the vehicle - sending it off to DVLA as is will mean the amended V5 (with his details) will go to his present address - where there won't be anyone to receive it.

So, with the imminent need to get tax in mind, can I simply use tip-ex on the V5 to go over the new owner details and replace them with mine?

Alternatively, any other suggestions?

Don't touch the V5 with tip ex. No no no.

If I were you, id ring up the main centre for this and explain the situation. At the end of the day the cars owners need to be traced back and your friend will have to be on the system as owning the car at some stage.

If you put the Tip-Ex on it, it may void it. It will definetly look suspicious if the full story is not explained.

When a garage gets a car in, dont they simply change the details from the previous owner before the garage to the owner after the garage using a special form of the V5. Can this be used in some way.

Tax wise, as long as you have little slip, section 7 I believe although I could be wrong, you can go and buy tax as that is proof of ownership for the first 2 months.

Thanks, I had a feeling that might be the case. I'll keep trying to get through to DVLA and see what they suggest.
