I wouldn't recommend the plastic Boots ones with replacable heads.

Sounds a bit yuck but a teaspoon works really well (and is moneysaving!) Plus you can clean it properly afterwards, which you can't easily do if you use a brush.

My dentist or hygienist has never recommended one of these to me. Are they really necessary, or are the makers of such things simply creating themselves a market?

What does Toothsmith think?

some toothbrushes have tongue cleaners on the back - a sort of textured rubbery bit.

Tongue cleaners are the sort of thing that if you need one, you KNOW you need one!!

Smokers particlularly, but also some people using inhalers, or various other medications can get quite coated tongues. Candida can also cause a furry tongue.

Toothbrush companies are trying to sell the idea that more people should scrub their tongue, but that's really just marketing hype.

It actually tickles like mad to try and do it!

Actually I dont know if it is just marketing hype but have no evidence to present either way :)...it certainly does no harm to give the tongue a brushing too while youre on the job

I've never cleaned my tongue in over 60 years and so far it hasn't fallen out ! It seems to have a pretty effective self cleaning mechanism.

I agree with Toothsmith, it's just something else designed to fill a need which doesn't exist, although I heard recently that some ladies have found the rubber tooth cleaning bit on an electric toothbrush works in another way on another part of the body :eek:

I love Tung Gel and rubber brush. It completely removes any coating leaving a lovely fresh, pink tongue.

When I see singers on the TV opening their mouths wide to display a white coat (can be caused by nerves, I believe), I think eugh, if only they knew the easy answer.

I buy the gel at Waitrose. The brush will be a once only purchase and the gel lasts months.

By post here too;

Tesco's do a good tongue cleaner. i use it before i brush my teeth and i love the clean tingly feel.
if you see you have a furry tongue then you probably feel you do need it. no harm in trying to keep a fresh breath!
