dentist work with maternity exemption?

Hi,

i currently have an NHS maternity excemption certificate as my baby is only 6 months old... I desperately need some dentistry work done but unsure if it will be covered by the maternity exemption? Or would i have to pay something?

Problem is i dont have a dentist at all so couldnt ask them... and havent had a dentist for approx 9 years! :o :o :o :o

I have 2 cavitys and another tooth which had a cavity then developed a lump in the gum above it.. then 3/4 of it broke off when the baby headbutted me.. now i have a nasty brown 1/4 tooth which oozes nasty stuff and bleeds daily! :( Hence why i need it seeing too ASAP. But dont know where to go.

Also, Im PETRIFIED of dentists after a bad incident, so since i dont have one would it be possible to go to my doctors and get a referral to the local dental hospital from my GP to have my treatment done im in agony :(

Hi Johanne, your maternity exemption cert will cover you until your baby is one year old so you wont have to pay for routine care. I am not familiar with the system in England but I believe contacting your local PCT on Monday morning will get you a list of NHS availability in your area. I dont think there is any advantage to you being referred to a dental hospital and such a referral would usually come from your dentist anyway, not a GP.
Hopsital treatment is usually for complex or difficult treatment, not for routine care.

oooohhhh you must be in terrible pain anyway dentist treament on maternity is 12 months and I had major work done last time ( after 5 kids zapping my calcium they are in a bad way lol ) the dentist refers you and a doctor will tell you go to a dentist maybe ring round the area find an NHS dentist and warn them well in advance that you are a nervous paitient but please get it sorted as absesses left untreated are serious ... a friend of mine ended up in intensive care ! don't want to scare you into it but it got me over my nerves lol

thanks so much for the advice. lets just hope i can find an nhs dentist local! The ones that weve enquired too only have a waiting list for nhs! :(

Whilst you're looking anyway, why not just see what the local private dentists are charging?

You'd be more likely to find a dentist who can spend a bit of time with you and get you through your fears. It would cost you though, but probably not as much as you think if all you have to go on is what the papers generally say private dentists charge!

I so agree with this Toothsmith.

As I posted before I also am, no make that was, terrified of dentists. The one I chose although private is extremely reasonable. However presumably the OP will not be expecting to pay anything so even £40 or so could well be too much for her.

Looks like my course of treatment privately will certainly be no more than I would have been expected to pay had I used an NHS dentist.
