I signed up to the First Great Western special offer where you get £5.00 off on any ticket over £6.00, but there's a snag in that you can't book single tickets, only returns which is no good to me for a trip that I'm going on to London next week as I wanted to use it to buy a single from London Euston to Runcorn.
In any case, I'll use it for another trip that I'm going on to London next month.

Hi borgan,
The ts and cs say that you can use the code for single tickets but the total must be over £6 for the code to work.

I definitely tried to buy a single ticket as described, but it wouldn't work... It made me input both a outward date and a return date which I didn't want to do...

i found the link would not work
I registered both my partner and myself for the £5 off promotion. We have the same home address, different email addresses. T&C's say limit is one discount per person, not one per household.
Two emails immediately arrived in our respective inboxes, but containing the same PIN number!
Called FGW customer services, and after 15 minutes on hold, they decided they didn't know how to fix it and told me to call another number which routed through to a woman in India who was completely inept.
Despite my reference several times to my partner as "he" and giving his name as "David", she kept referring to "your wife". The upshot of an unnecessarily lengthy call where the FGW representative continually struggled to understand the problem, is that I have to re-register using a different email address.
I asked to have the account for the original email address deleted and was told this was not possible, so my partner will have to endure the marketing guff on that account.

Just wasted a load of time trying to get this £5 off.
Didn't work, either through the website or the callcentre, and I will make a point of NOT booking with them in future

Hi there,
First Great Western has said there should be no problems claiming the £5 off but if you could be more specific about the problems they will look into any possible glitches. If you could post some more details on this thread that would be great.
Many thanks

Well I just tried to use the code that was emailed to me and used this link http://www.fgwtickets.co.uk/promotion_init.asp?spromotion=FGW5OFF&sitecode=FGWThe site accepted my code, but the total price charged was the same that I would have paid on a non 'trainline' website that I checked at the same time, so no discount was applied. I bought 2 single tickets from Manchester to Euston for November 15th.
I was already registered with FGW and Trainline, would this have made any difference?

Well, it comes as no surprise to me that the £5 reduction offer from First Great Western is riddled with flaws. I registered last night and recieved a PIN number through email. Logged in with it, chose my ticket, and then it couldn't find a journey for the times I specified and was coming up with 7 hour journey times from Portsmouth to London. So I thought I would try to change the destination station, well that was impossible. Once I had chosen the stations I wanted to travel from/to, there was no way of going back to the main page to reselect a station. I tried logging out and back in again and it managed to remember where I left the site the last time, so I still couldn't return to choosing new stations. Just out of interest I went to the National Rail site to see what the journey would have cost me normally: £18.90. I then went back to First Great Western and searched for the same journey (without logging in with my PIN), and the price they gave me for EXACTLY the same journey was £4 more then on National Rail. Therefore the £5 discount I would have recieved through them if there website had actually worked, would have saved me roughly £1. Like I say, its what I have come to expect from them, as there train service itself is ridiculously unreliable compared to other train operators, and I use trains all the time as I don't use a car.

Here is my experience:
I registered my details including my email address but was not asked for a registration password. The promotional code was emailed to me without any problem. I entered the PIN code and found the journey I want to make (incidentally, I have also found that the journey has been "saved" so I cannot change the details of the journey), this was displayed at the FULL PRICE cost of £21 as quoted on nationalrail.co.uk i.e. without the applied discount, I assume that the discount will be applied at a later stage.
HOWEVER, when I tried to pay for it and complete the transaction, I was asked to sign in with an email address AND PASSWORD which I dont have!!
So I called the 0844 number to book aforementioned ticket over the phone. I was told that now I have been given a PIN number by email, I cannot book over the phone, I have to complete the transaction over the internet. I would like to know how I do this without a password?!
When I explained the problems I was having, I was asked to call the SAME 0844 number again and speak to some who knows more about it!!!!

Just thought I'd put a little note in here from someone who the offer of £5 off train tickets actually worked. I had no problems whatsoever finding routes and times that suited and got 5 pounds of a 10 pound journey, so half price for me! :T

Hi happyshopper. How did you get your pin? Like you, I'm already registered with FGW and Trainline but when I try to register to get my £5 pin, its says my email address is already registered. Is this promotion only opened to new registrations?

i found the link would not work
I also tried the Virgin link which worked fine. My problem is i don't have a suitable mobile phone to receive tickets. is there any way i can get a printable ticket on my computer?
Although there is still a link on the main website you cannot get print at home tickets. Virgin Support say that they are no longer available and have no idea when the system will be operational again. In the meantime you can only get Mobitix tickets requiring a wap enabled phone for each travelling passenger. Of course there are lots of more expensive tickets available via the contact centre. Not very inclusive for a company providing a heavily subsidised public service!!
Quick tip for National Express Funfares that might be worth a mention on the site.
If you're booking a journey that involves multiple coaches then don't book it all on one ticket.
For example, I wanted to travel from Canterbury to Birmingham and back. This involves a change in London so that's four coaches total. By booking a return from Canterbury to London the National Express website tries to charge me about £42 (if I recall correctly). So what I did was go through their booking process four times. I booked Canterbury to London, London to Birmingham, Birmingham to London then London to Canterbury. With Funfares the average cost of each trip was £5 making my total ticket cost about £20. This was booking the day before travel as well.
It takes a bit longer but book in sections and use Funfare e-tickets and on this type of journey you could at least halve your cost.
Also if you have a phone that allows you to store and display web pages but lack a printer then that (in my experience) has been just as valid as a printout. Saves you the 50p on the mobile phone ticket if you can do it that way but I've only tested this a couple of times so I'm not sure if it came down to a generous driver or company policy.

Club 55 is back in Scotland till March 31st 2009
With Club 55 you can travel anywhere in Scotland at off peak times (and as far down as Carlisle) for just £15 return between 20 October and 31 March 2009 inclusive. (excluding travel between 19 December and 11 January)
Last week I got a return ticket from Aberdeen to Glasgow for £15 instead of £47.10.

Sorry if this should be posted somewhere else ... I'm not very good at this sort of thing.
I booked a journey through thetrainline.com and got the chance to claim back £15 off my next journey during a 30 day free trial of Shopper Discounts & Rewards. Bit of a palavar because after the trial period they debit you £10 a month to be a member, but I did check in the small print that you can cancel, it was worth it I reckon. I booked another journey within the required period (30 days) (not even for me ... for my sister, who needs to travel soon). e-mailed the trainline payment confirmation to SDR and a £15 cheque arrived within 3 days! Cancelled my trial period. Job done. I've got £15 in the bank - to share with my sis!

I just registered and got an e-mail immediately with a pin number. Tried to use it via the link and direct to the website and it says its invalid. Called the number on their site and spoke to a woman in India who said I couldn't book with her if I had got the code online. She then told me I had to wait for 10 minutes before I used it. Have tried again and it still wont accept it.
I can;t find anywhere on their website where you can actually contact someone.
Any advice?

I too had some trouble with getting the Great Western tickets. the first one worked fine and the second one I got the same code. Luckily I had 3 email addresses to play with and in the end, I got a 2 returns to Reading which cost £1.10 each instead of £6.10 each! BARGAIN!!!

The megabus offer as stated in the weekly e-mail is actually better than stated. I found loads of free journeys during January and February, and you can book up to four single journeys for only the 50p booking fee. I did this again for another 4 singles, which makes it 25p a journey...:money:

I got from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street yesterday on a Super Off Peak Return Ticket for 14.50. It stipulates that you can only travel on London Midland only though...but on a journey that normally costs upwards of 41.30, it was an absolute bargain. Unless I'm booking WELL in advance, I'm always going into the station in future rather than booking online.

 Hello Moneysavers!
Does anyone know of any current or upcoming promotions for the 16-25 railcard?
I remember last year the week after i purchased a railcard, there was a 50% off promotion. (Quite annoying!)
But since there's an offer on the Friends & Family one, I wasn't sure if maybe the "lovely" chaps at National Rail were planning another.
Did Martin secure the 50% off discount especially for this site? I'm sure there was some code like moneysaving50! Or perhaps the lovely Martin could have a word. I quite fancied calling them up and cheekily asking, but I can't find a number for 'Railcard' and National Rail are a bunch of apes.
Thank you!
Replies appreciated!

If you don't mind a little bit of a longer journey you can save bucket loads on train journeys from Southampton to London Victoria.
A normal off peak anytime return ticket to London Waterloo is £21 with a YP railcard (so £30 odd without) but if you book the advance ticket (up to 6pm the day before) for London Victoria it is £3 o/w!
The journey does take up to 3 hours and is on a slow stopping train - but if like me you can use the time to do work, it's a godsend really :D
One thing - I generally use this to get to London on a weekday evening - I'm not sure of the frequency at weekends....
Also, it goes via Gatwick, so could be a moneysaver for flight connections.....
Happy travelling!

Hi, I've just been looking for London - Newcastle & return. Best deal seems to be National Express bus funfares, with a break at Sheffield, making 4 separate journeys, with 3 stages at £1 and the other one at £6. Quite a bit cheaper than booking as two journeys direct London - Newcastle and return, with the advantage of a break and walkabout time in Sheffield!

Isn't it a good idea to add in the article on the website about Mobitix? Apart from the fact that it can be... messy it's not free (OK it's only pennies but still)
I just used the site and was trying to find an alternative to mobitix but not only there is not one right now but it doesn't even say that there will be in the future. I think this is the only way you can get your tickets in the future so if it's added to the article at least people who join it will know ;)
Oh and just in case this message it's too whingey...
I just want to add that I have found great deals on this site and I do appreciate everything that the MSE team does for the us (the consumers) and subsequently the market.

It looks like it you enter your card type before it gives you train prices.
Tried to book 4 tickets but you only get one £5 off ( I was expecting £5 per ticket) then plus £1 booking fee and £2.50 credit charge. I don't know if I can risk going through the process 4 times as we may not get seats together!

I have been battling with Virgin for 6 months to access the special offer £1-£9 Manchester to London fares. I used to get the Print@Home tickets with no problem but that service is now not available.
Mobitix is now the only method for accessing these special offers. My phone has all the correct facilities enabled but will not accept the tickets. Virgin keep asking their techies to help but they don't.
I'm really fed up because I visit London at least once a month and I saved loads with the Print@Home scheme but now I have to buy advance or offpeak tickets. If I can book well in advance I can still get £8 tickets but£1, £3 or £7 is even better.

It sounds a bit of a rave but perhaps you could try to get three other people to use the site at the same time as you on separate computers/laptops? Then you could benefit from four times the £5 offer and also check if the seats are relatively close together. Like I say, it's a bit of a performance though!
Also, in reply to janiceb, I have a 16-25 Railcard too and I had problems. I rang them up, thinking it was a problem with the promotion and they told me to clear the trainline cookies off my computer, which I did, but no success. I eventually gave up and decided that I should be satisfied with my 33% off! I know this doesn't help you, but it may alert others to badger thetrainline over the phone for their discount :)

Re the link (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/redir/c7b734c7) for £5 discount on rail tickets over £20 from TheTrainLine: by all means use this link while it lasts.
But once this offer finishes don't buy from TheTrainLine. Not only do they charge a £1 booking fee, they also charge £2.50 if you use a credit card. They are one of the only train ticket selling companies that does this. Buy from any of the others to avoid paying £3.50 in fees, eg. National Express East Coast, Chiltern Railways, Southern Railways, Virgin etc.

Hi,
Hopefully this the right forum, i'm talking about the family and friends card not the £5 discount?
I've just looked at the terms of the Family and Friends card and you HAVE to have one child travelling with you in order for the discount to apply. What about those that don't have children?
I travel by train regularly so would really benefit from this deal, but for whatever reason (separate discussion) I don't have kids so can't use it. I only travel off peak so it's not like i'd be getting a discount on their horrendous peak time fares, and if anything should be more appealing since i'm not taking up another seat on the train for a child which could be used for an adult passenger.
Sorry, rant over!

Hi Laura,
Welcome aboard the MSE forum; there is nothing quite like a good rant as a first posting:D So you are a rich singleton or an even more prosperous DINKY couple?:T
The train companies charge what they think they can get away with, and having kids is a 100,000++ investment, that tends to mean that their parents are a bit short of the readies. .
It is worth checking out your journey, here in poverty stricken Saff Essex;) we give our local train company a hard time and even British Rail had to cut fares in order to put rival coach firms out of business.
We get cheaper than usual off peak day returns at the weekend and a half price offer for group travellers.
http://www.c2c-online.co.uk/tickets_timetables/ticket_types/leisure/group_tickets
[The company even came up with a scam of its own in relation to its cross ticketing with London Transport - but we will leave that old dog sleeping].
Perhaps you should try starting a competition on here by posting the journey you want to make and then challenging other MSE'rs to beat your price.

To get a half price family railcard (so £13 rather than £26) if you buy online between 24/7/09 and 21/8/09: go to www. familyandfriends-railcard .co.uk and enter the promotional code DAILYM09, then you get a year’s worth of discounted travel for £13.

Thanks archiebabes for the heads-up on the Daily Mail offer. There's a slight sting in the tail if you want to combine it with the free YHA membership - I quote from the 'purchase complete' page of the railcard website:
"Claim your free one year Family YHA (England and Wales) membership valued at £22.95 by calling on receipt of your Railcard.
"* Please note the free YHA membership offer is not valid for Family & Friends Railcards purchased as part of the Daily Mail promotion. Customers purchasing a Railcard through the Daily Mail promotion will be entitled to 50% discount on family YHA memberships. Please quote Daily Mail when redeeming the offer. All other t&c's apply."
So it amounts to a £1.50 discount off the whole package, though I've not figured out if your railcard is somehow branded "Daily Mail reader"...

Hello, I have just been out of the country for a while and am quite shocked :shocked:to find out that the cheapest fare from Exmouth to Bangor in North Wales is £119.The last time I booked to go up there I was able to get an Apex or Super Apex by booking 2-3 weeks in advance, not 12 weeks. I don't generally know what I am doing 3 months in advance.I did phone National Rail enquiries and they were able to offer me a cheaper fare @ £76 arriving at nearly 11pm. I am 67 years old and find that a bit late to be travelling on my own. The only alternative is to travel with National Express who offer a reduction for people my age £39 return. However it's 101/2 hours travel as opposed to 7. In Spain where I have been recently they offer 30% reduction to people over 60. How about they do the same for the elderly over here.I have recently read about a deal where you can go from St Pancras all the way to Switzerland for less than £100 retun. No one wants to give up their cars with these prices.None of this makes any sense to me. Anyone have any ideas?

I am unsure what you are asking?
Or are you just having a rant?
If you want help looking for a cheaper train ticket, you will need to tell us when you want to travel.
For the journey you want to make I can find Single tickets for £34 each way, at reasonable hours. The dates I chose were out on 8Sep return on 22Sep... 2/3 weeks away (not 12 weeks).
If you want a discount, get a Senior Railcard. Ok you have to buy it, but it gives a bigger discount that you could get in Spain.
I don't understand where Switzerland comes into it.
Do you want to go there too?
I realise peoples situations change, but here (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=2763800&postcount=18) you were complaining that you couldn't book more than three months in advance. Now you say you don't know what you are doing 3 months ahead.

Hi again, another offer by Arriva Trains Wales - Club 55. Saw a TV yesterday afternoon and there's posters up in Cardiff Central station.
Club 55 - Anyone who's 55 or over can travel anywhere on the Arriva Trains Wales network for £15 return. Ticket can be brough over the phone or at train station. Offer not available online.
More information is available on the Arriva Trains Wales website.
Unfortunatley, I'm too young to participate in this offer but seems like a good deal, especially if you're doing a long distance trip. First Great Western ran a similar promotion this time last year and I think they're doing it again this year.

National Express East Coast have increased their discount on their advance tickets for booking made in the next few days:
To get a whopping 20% off, all you need to do is book between 28 September and 2 October (http://links.emails.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/ctt?kn=3&m=34078387&r=MTUyNTU1MjA0NwS2&b=0&j=NTg1NjMxMTES1&mt=1&rt=0), for East Coast travel between 5 October and 20 December.

I'm puzzled by the inclusion of the Cross Country 'up to 75%' offer in this list. It looks like just the normal advance ticket offer - nothing special or additional to that available on other websites. And £1 to post the tickets - free elsewhere.
Or am I missing a trick?

There is an offer for over 55s travelling in Scotland, very similar to the "Scotland by Rail" voucher scheme. It's called Club 55 Senior. A return ticket anywhere in Scotland (including Berwick and Carlisle) costs £15 - deduct £2 if you've a Senior Railcard. Even better: add only £4 to travel first class, e.g. on the routes between Edinburgh or Glasgow and Aberdeen or Inverness.
Valid for travel up to Sunday 13 December for the outward journey; return within one month of departure. No need to book for the Club 55 Standard tickets, but for first class (Club 55 Premier) you must book in advance and travel on the trains you specify. You can use the Scotrail website or the National Express East Coast site (but that one says that the tickets aren't valid after 30 June!)

I've used this regularly over the last 3 years when it was available.. Great deal!
If you are travelling second class you can just ask for a ticket at a manned station on the day of departure - note though that (at the moment) they are not valid for
travel before 9:15am. If you need to leave earlier just buy a single ticket to a station
which you leave after 9:15.
You can also take bikes on this ticket for free even on those trains that
require bikes to be pre-booked! My wife and I travelled with pre-booked seats and pre-booked bikes from Ayrshire to Mallaig (7 hours? ) journey each way over the
best railway route in the UK - Rannoch Moor/Glenfinnan Viaduct (some may argue!) for £30 total.

I recently purchased a SENIOR RAIL CARD from National Rail for my mother. Cost of £26. Then deciding to get one myself - I discovered that I could get one for £16 from my local council. In this instance it was the Cheshire West and Chester Council. I wonder if all Councils offer this reduction for the Senior Rail Card, or is it just Cheshire.

No all councils do not provide this facility, but there are others with varying discounts.

You have already listed the Southern 50% offer. This is a bit sneaky, but a one day off peak day Travelcard across zones 1-6 normally costs £7.50. If you book a one day off peak Travelcard from Epsom (which seems to be the closest station just outside zone 6), this normally costs £9, but because of the 50% discount, is currently available for £4.50. You can pick the ticket up from any station ticket machine, and as far as I am aware, there is no obligation to start the journey in Epsom, so effectively you are getting the use of a £7.50 ticket for £4.50. The only slight problem is that the ticket when printed, calls itself a one day season ticket, valid only on Southern, which is almost a contradiction in terms, since the online booking conditions clearly say that it is a Travelcard. Bus drivers do not always recognize its validity, but there is no problem using ticket gates on the tube.

That a great suggestion.
And if you happen to have a railcard, that same zones 1-6 travelcard becomes £3.00.
Absolutely brilliant! That's cheaper than one single cash ride on the tube.
