Car alarm keeps going off

My car alarm has started going off, approx 3 times a day (including middle of the night :mad:)

Its a factory fitted one on an old Rover 400 (P reg) and has a fact. fitted immobiliser. Is it easy to disabled the alarm? Or am I best taking it to a garage for them to sort it out?

Also...I have noticed the car door open light on the dash stays on sometimes, even though they are shut? Could this affect the alarm?

A flat battery will set the alarm off, and the light inside the the car will flatten the battery! Sort the interior light issue and you may only need to charge the battery...

Most original fitted car alarms of that era worked by detecting voltage drop from the interior light when the door was opened. Chances are one of the door switches needs sorting out. No idea how easy they are to get to on the rover. Assuming the door switches are ground switched, you can get generic cut-to-size door switches from maplins for 99p but they may need some drilling/fettling to fit properly, as well as the wiring.

Another possibility is there is an electrical short elsewhere.

If you don't fancy tackling the problem yourself an automotive electrician is your best bet to sort the problem out - that should be the category they're under in the yellow pages :)

I bet it only does it in a period following rain and when it's been dry for a while, it stops?

The alarm module is in the boot under the rear parcel shelf on the drivers side under the boot lining. They get water in them and go batty. Find it and pull the multiplug out.
