Hi Guy's,
If any of you have seen my previous thread, it looks like I'm going to be left with a car for sale that doesn't run (well it does just, but is in need a lot of work to repair the engine).
Does anyone know the best way of getting rid of it, obviously I need to sell it and get some cash to put towards a new one.
Thanks
BB x

ebay - just be honest and you will get rid of it - it's the easiest way and you will get more money for it that way

Do you have a freecycle group near to you ? are you a member ?
On ours, last week someone was advertising an Astra, he said because it had alloy wheels he was going to take these off to sell, so if any wanted the car they would need to go to a scrapyard and buy some wheels, i forget if it was a runner or not, but next day he posted to say it had been taken.
If he can get rid of one with no wheels, you should try that.

check local papers, or friday etc, for car scrap firms- usually cash paid.

TAKE YOUR TAX DISC OUT!

Scrap metal is usually worth more than the car. Cat and alloys can be taken off and sold seperately for good money if the car has them? Don't take the tax disc out until sold though, otherwise you could get fined for not declaring the vehicle SORN, and some breakers dont take cars declared SORN either, so check before agreeing a price.

Thanks for your help.
I've just had what looks to me like a resonable quote from webuyanycar.com, has anyone had any dealings with this company, at the moment it seems like the best way of getting rid of it!
Thanks

DONT!

They quoted one price, and only offered half of that price once they are there with cash in hand. You will not get what they've offered, and I bet even what they've offered is a poor price...

Weigh it in. That way there's no comebacks. A small car should fetch around £80-£100 scrap value.

Can I ask what car you have? My 11 years old ford fiesta had a head gasket leak which emptied out the oil with no warning oil light coming on either, damagimg the engine. My car is also going to the scraps, what I plan to do with it is to strip most reuseable parts out to sell or use as spares and sell the rest to a scrap metal company. A local scrap metal place pays £35 per ton of metal and takes the car away even without wheels.

How do they get away with that!!
They quoted me £560, but obviously thats due to an inspection. Its more than I'd get for it if I sold it, as its running but probably needs an engine rebuild, and for scrap I've been quoted £100 at the most as prices are down at the moment!

webuyanycar offered me £810 and I took £750. Worked for me.

They did state on the follow up call that your under no bligation to accept the offer even after they have inspected the vehicle, so nothing makes me take it if I feel its to low, I've had nothing near that with the scrap yards I've contacted.
I was just slightly concerned about the BACS payment side of things, I'd rather get the money there and then!

Your call, barge pole and wouldn't touch spring to mind with that outfit, I have never known anybody get what they actually quote, sometimes they have received as little as about a quarter of their original offer.

I was offered £1200 for my mk4 Golf a few months back, got £2900 for it privately...spot the difference ;)

Most of the cars offered on freecycle are no doubt taken to be weighed in by greedy people who have no interest in sorting out the car and using it. With the value of scrap metal - do what they'd do and put the money in your purse/wallet instead. Can be worth stripping for bits first and getting another of the same car as mentioned above as ArsenalFC says - as this will reduce your cost of the ownership of the next car and also give you an idea of how the bits and pieces come appart and go together - plus if you've removed one before - chances are you'll feel more confident replacing it yourself when something goes wrong on the next one meaning no need to pay a garage to do it.

Where can I sell my write-off for scrap?

What do I search for? Breakers yards or scrap metal dealers?

You'll not get much for scrap now, the prices have dropped significantly in the last few months.

Ebay is the best bet, just be honest and you'll sell it.

Yup, some scrappies won't even pay you for cars now

I made the mistake of selling my car on ebay, stating that the tax would NOT be included (£68's worth)...then went and left the flippin thing in the car. Resulting in me getting about £50 for the car. Oh crap.

I've left the car at the garage for so long now they've offered to get rid of it and give me £150! I've got someone also going to view it on Monday and ring me with an offer, I'm hoping he'll offer around £250 so I can at least cover the garage costs, so fingers crossed it'll be gone soon and I can draw a line under the whole thing.

Just a note to those of you wanting to sell for scrap, after loads of phone calls to scrap yards and dismantlers the best price I was offered was £70 and that was for a small 4x4, doesn't seem to be any trade in scrap metal at the moment.

Hi,
Its a Sportrak, P reg, petrol, A bar, Side Steps and in great condition for the year, possible 'big end' problem hence the fact I'm getting rid of it, garage fees are far above my budget at the moment!
