View Full Version : Counselling over the phone
Does anyone know if you can get counselling over the phone? I could really do with sorting some issues out, but getting anywhere is a problem.
I have had some really bad and destructive counselling in the past, so does anyone know how easy it is to get this, and perhaps if the first few sessions are becoming destructive then perhaps if there are loads of opportunities for phone counselling I could switch.
All help gratefully received.

Can;t help you much with this I'm afraid other that suggest ringing Samaritans or Citizens Advice...........they might be able to refer you on to someone recommended.
Good luck

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think you can. I done counselling GCSE and A level, but decided I was not cut out to go onto the degree. :(
Counselling is not just about talking and listening, body language plays a big part. I would ask your GP, if it does exist as I wouldn't like to think you were lulled into a scam, for the 'convenience'.
I was made aware of possibly having to work unsociable hours, to cater for everyone's needs.
Hope you find something soon. :D
Someone might come alon and say something different, but this was not a topic I covered, it was more role play.
Also, your counsellor should tell you at first appointment, that you don't have to see them. People clash in everyday life, we can't like all the people, all of the time. You just need to find the right person for you.

Treatment and counselling can be done over the phone but it is unlikely to always be as effective because as someone else said there is no body language to see. I could do allsorts of hypnotherapy over the phone which would work if you followed my instructions but I would not be able to see the early signs of distress if you were being pushed too far so it could be dangerous.
There is no harm in phoning around and talking to counsellors and seeing who you are most likely to get on with before you see one face to face.
Thanks for your replies.
I really will have trouble just getting to a counsellor, as in, making time in the day/night. That's why I would consider telephone counselling as in the past I have had face to face counselling that has been both extremely helpful and damaging, but one helpful counsellor gave me the option of one or two sessions of telephone counselling when I dislocated my shoulder and really didn't want to do the travelling!
I shall go away and have a think.
Thank you again for your suggestions.

phone conselling is possible. Speak to your GP about it they should be able to help point you in the right direction. Your employer is also another place to look. I have recently completed a course of 8 sessions through my employer. Nothing is sent back to your employer and they don't even know you use it.
