Filling a half-litre soft drinks bottle with water is meant to work just as well ...

They're posted really quickly. I just got my two this morning. They're basically bags with granules in that expand as they soak up the water so its fairly easy to get them past and under the ball in the cistern. :)

Thats great iomexico. !Hope they're putting your meter outside your house and not inside !:)

I've only just started a new billing period so its quite good timing. !When i get my next bill it'll be interesting to compare it to the same period last year and see what difference it made.

mine arrived this morning so I shall install this evening and report back :)

Ra
20-01-2004, 4:11 PM
installed mine on Sat.

Unfortunately it doesnt really fit too well as it wider than the gap between the side and the pipe. So it sort of sits at an odd angle and refuses to stay on the bottom, regardless of how many times ive squeezed excess air out! So i hope it's doing its job!!

Andrea
20-01-2004, 5:15 PM
Mine's the same Ra. It said on the bag that its supposed to go between the ball and the side but mine won't. It just kind of sits more or less on the bottom.

I assumed it does the job anyway because its size displaces water meaning less water is needed to refill the cistern every time you flush so it doesn't matter exactly where it sits. I don't know the first thing about how toilets work though so this is just a guess. ::)

Ra
20-01-2004, 7:03 PM
i was just making sure that the unique way mine (ours) sits in the bowl wouldnt interfer with the ball in any ways..seems ok though!

Great these are back! I had a few some years ago -- they were being given away in B&Q. I took them out because they shrunk after a couple of years and stopped functioning. I still have a spare in my garage somewhere which I must dig out but i'll also order some more.

It doesn't really matter how they sit in your cistern as long as they expand and displace water.

I found this on the original website - Severn Trent Water.

If you would like to save one litre of water every time you flush your toilet, you can request a free 'Save-a-Flush' bag by calling 0800 783 4444

Andrea
25-01-2004, 2:18 PM
It hasn't Grittyhubcap - just follow my instructions in the first post. I had to put the underscore in because when I first posted the full link the profanity filter changed it (don't ask my why - i can't quite work out what rude word is in there). ::)

Hi Andrea, err yes it does.... now. It didn't last night, despite the underscore thingy. Anyway I'm sorted got a couple for my parents. This is excellent for those with meters.
Thanks again (How do you find these things!!?)

Thanks again (How do you find these things!!?)

;D

;D I'm easily bored. When i've got nothing better to do I just sit and trawl the net seeing what i can find. I found a load the other day during the Whizz Kidz clickathon. I was determined to stay up until it reached the next 1000th but needed to do something between clicks. Think i was up till about 3 that night/ morning. ::)

I've found quite a few (including this one) on the rpoints site. There are good freebies/ deal sections there. Quite a few are ones that have already been posted here and have been filched so I thought i'd do some filching back ;D

I also do competitions now and then so I get quite a few email newsletters and they often have deals/ freebies in.

:)

Nice One. It's nice to see that companies and money savers alike are doing a little bit for our environment. I have just ordered 2 (1 for home and 1 for work). Lets hope it makes the world a slightly better place.

Thanks Andrea,

Ordered ours early last week got it friday.

I had to put the underscore in because when I first posted the full link the profanity filter changed it (don't ask my why - i can't quite work out what rude word is in there).

I think the problem that the profanity blocker is picking up on is between the last letter in Trent and the first three letters in Water!

Not sure if you reallywanted to know or was just joking!

Thanks Again :)

I think they must have just sent out a new batch cos I ordered mine weeks ago and they both arrived today. Both are expanding nicely (in separate cisterns of course!) ::)
Am on a water meter , thanks to the previous owner, so I guess we'll see a slight difference in consumption.

I wasn't sure if this was just open to Severn Trent customers, so found my local Authority do a similar offer:

Does anyone know if it would be beneficial for me, to have a water meter installed? There's just me & my son in my house & I pay almost £200 a year to Thames Water.

Hi Miranda

There are a couple of past threads that may help you make your decision: Water bills questions and comment (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Utility;action=display;num=10562066 40;start=16#16) and Switching to water meter (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Utility;action=display;num=10828409 93;start=4#4). :)

30-04-2004, 12:17 PM
After seeing this thread on the newsletter I went to Anglian Waters web site (my supplier) and they have a similar device available FREE (a word we all love). For anyone else living in Anglian waters area if you mail INTSVCS@anglianwater.co.uk and leave your full postal address requesting a "Freddie Frog" water displacement device they will send one. I only asked for mine yesterday so I cant say how long it will take to arrive.

Oh and regarding meters v rates.... I live alone, only take showers and run my washing machine 1 or 2 times a week. My water bills vary between £35 and £50 per 6 monthly bill.

OK then, since I just had my meter installed yesterday (Anglian Water quote up to 10 working weeks for the SURVEY - fortunately he surveyed and fitted at the same time), I already have the Severn Trent bag - is the Anglian Freddie Frog better or worse in saving terms??

And £70-100 per year sounds a lot better than the £384 I currently pay them!! :)

Just received my first water bill since putting these in. Its a good comparison as I'd only just had my last bill when I got them.

This bill is £15.28 less than the one for the same period last year. £30 a year isn't a huge saving but better in my pocket than the water company's I think :)

I tried to apply for one of the save a flush bags but it wouldn't work - I guess because I'm outside the area. ???

However, I contacted Mid Kent Water (I live in Maidstone) and they told me they do give them out to anyone who asks if you are one of their customers - turns out I'm not ( :-[ boy did I feel an idiot!) however, they gave me the email address of Southern Water (my supplier) who sent three in the post on my request - hooray! ;D

It seems that nearly all suppliers will give these bags out for free, but you have to ask first!

Thanks for the idea,
Julia

Yes, the Severn-Trent site was, erm, bunged up last night when I tried to pass an order. However, this morning, someone has flushed it out and my details seem to be in the pipeline. Someone understands their bog role! Hope the office staff handle my order and don't pull the chain on it just because I'm out of their area.

If their network wasn't working, I suppose they will claim the cistern was down. Probably a load of ballcocks, I know.

No doubt wee'll get to know as the start of the week gets the company gears into motion.

The bag goes in the toilet cistern and reduces the amount of water used when you flush the toilet.

Money-saving for those on water meters and environmentally friendly for everyone else, so worth sending off for one.

You can also pick them up from local reservoirs in the severn trent area.

(I've not read whole thread as didn't have time, so appologies if this has already been covered.

Found this at Anglian Water:
"Devices that save water.
...firstly we researched the effectiveness of devices to put into water cisterns. This showed that even small ½ litre devices can affect the flushing of toilets if not fitted correctly and this can cause customers to flush toilets twice - and so use more water. We recommend correct fitting and only in toilets with cisterns greater than 7 ½ litres."

Hi all,
Speaking as an emergency plumber I would be carefull using these on newer WCs.

The old toilets used to flush gallons of water then it went to 9 litres , then 7 and now the newer ones are 6 litre flush. 6 litres is just enough or in some cases not enough! Using less water coulds result in the toilet needed to be flushed twice or in some cases blocking. I would say just use the water savers on very old toilets.
Mark

Me again,
Some of you may have dual flush toilets and not realise it . Thats a half flush for a number one and erm..you get the idea?
The newer toilets with the push button on the top have 2 buttons in one, one of these is the half flush.

Some older toilets with a lever work like this;
flush and hold down for full flush or flush and release quickly for half flush.

For the DIYers out there some siphons have plastic bungs that can be removed to alter the volume of water flushed but beware of starving the pan of water as mentioned in previous post.

Well, Glad Im an expert on something!

These things don't last forever. Not sure if there are made the same as the ones they used at my work but they started to gradually disintergrate in the cistern. Had been there for a couple of years- had some sort of foam in them? We've got a newish old cistern (if that makes sense), and adjuated the max fill level on the ballcock manually to about 1/2 capacity.

anyone wanting a water-saving product within the Thameswater area, just call in and ask for one.

They are free and you can have a few at a time (london and southwest areas)

If you go to your local water provider and ask for a free water hog they will give you one, you whack it in your toilet tank and it then expands to save you a litre of water per flush

these are great my dad went yesterday and got 3 :j

I know this is really off the subject but i have been wondering for a long time if George Micheal is on the Vauxhaul advert with a man sliding down a hill to get infront of a car and say the words "nice car mate" who agrees?

1. Just put a half litre - or whatever size fits - plastic water-filled bottle in your cistern.
2. Save all washing up water, store in plastic buckets and bowls (in the bath) and flush the loo as and when necessary.
3. Ditto water used in preparing vegetables.

Sadly I know the answer to this - Bradley walsh in corrie - not him in the ad but his look a like as he turned it down.
"it's a puppet" was Brian conley... Fortunately, Misty is not actually my own name and nobody who knows me in real life will know I've admitted to knowing this!!!

For all those people on a water meter or considering it... Beware. We moverd into our present home which was our first water meter... set up a DD.. each year end we were in debit and paying a high monthly payment. The meter is on the street, when we tried to read it we couldnt (nor could the meter reader) It was under 2 feet of water. We complained.. a man arrived with a very big sponge it took him twenty minutes to empty the water, then another 10 mins tapping the glass until the condensation dropped off in order for him to read the meter......For three years our readings had all been estimates, because it took to long to read the meter. We now have a new meter and 3 years of money back. apparently it is illegal not to be able to read your own meter.......

Just a slight word of warning regarding 'save a flush' items. I used the hippo bags for some time but experienced two instances of blocked drains whereby the reduced amount of water didn't quite have the pressure to forcefully push all of the, ahem, waste paper through the outside drain. this eventually resulted in a blockage that both times meant stirring a stinking drain until the blockage removed itself. Not a pleasant job and one that could have caused an overflowing drain (yuck!). I also found that you may have to flush two or three times whereas without it fitted you'd only flush once.

I have a water meter and do like the idea of both saving money, and water, but I'm not entirely convinced by the hippo bags and their equivalent. I have fitted a new cistern whilst renovating the bathroom etc. with dual flush controls which I reckon is the best long term solution.

I got these last year and as several people have said they are difficult to fit in some cisterns, I tried everything in one of my cisterns and could not get the flush to work properly if it was in, so I left it out, A friend then told me try 1/2 a house brick, it worked a treat saving all that dosh.

But if you fit one in be very careful, the contents seem to be some sort of sand or something and after a while it was getting sucked into the syphon tube and damaged the disc inside the syphon.

But earlier this year while in Canada my mate showed me his setup, the syphon is replaced by an arm and a tube with large flat disk contected to the arm, so when you press the button (you get all the conversion bits for changing that in the kit) and the water flushes straight into the bowel without being slowed by a syphon. And the best bit is, it only letsa through the water while your finger is on the button, so if you do a No' 1,s then let go after a couple of seconds if No 2's then hold a bit longer and the stronger flush means its all gone quicker. Saved me a bomb.

You can now buy these in a certain catalogue that gets everything to you next day if ordered by 6pm. It has paid for itself within 3 months, and of course you are doing your bit for the enviroment as well...

Hi all,

I've just ordered 3 bags from Welsh water, will let you know how long it takes, I'm not on a water meter yet but thought I'd take a step in the right direction to saving water. On a slightly different but same tack (!) I'm also investing in a water butt to save water in the garden too.

The link for welsh water customers is http://www.dwrcymru.com/English/Forms/hippo/index.asp

or just see the link from their website.

As a plumber I would only reccomend these if you have a loo over 10 years old.
A few years ago the volume changed from 9 litres to 7 . Some now flush as little as 6 .

With the newer loos they are flushing with as little as possible. Any less water and the chocolate log may refuse to go to Blackpool .
You`ll end up flushing twice and using more water.

Even when replacing the siphone reducing the flush volume is not reccomended, this is why a good replacement siphon will have settings for 6 / 7 and 9 litre flush ( like the one in the link below). The one below also has a half flush option which is good but I wouldnt change a siphon if it wasnt broken just to save money as it would take many years to get your money back.

Hi,

here's another idea to reduce water usage, cut a plastic drinks bottle to the length that will fit in your cistern, immerse it and fill with water, so reducing the amount of water needed for each flush, as bottle will remain full after each flush.

Greetings all,

I recently fitted a water meter. I got a plumber in to change my flush from the old 9 litre to new 6 litre type. While here I asked if he had any tips on saving cash by saving water. From this I now have a basin in my bathroom sink. When I dispose of this water I throw it down the toilet to reduce the number of times I need to flush the loo.

Received my Hippo from Yorkshire water, now in the cistern. Also marigold seeds, which require minimum watering. In Zimbabwe always used a half brick and was horrified at the amount used to flush when we first came here. Also had a meter installed. After a year I could opt to continue with it or return to a bill based on rateable value. Nice to have the choice. I save £174.00 each year.

Filling a half-litre soft drinks bottle with water is meant to work just as well ...
If you live alone, try and bin the loo paper, but don't pull the chain each time, Use a blue loo block.save it for the 6 one, then note your bill go down dramatically,
i have a loo problem and don't use the chain at night, the paper goes into my green bin, my bill is now roughly £11 for sewage instead of £40
Got the idea from the Dominicians.:T

Some people use bricks, but that's not a good idea.

Just make sure the bags don't interfere with the arm or the ballcock. If the ballcock gets stuck down somehow the cistern will continually let water through and you'll find out whether your overflow is leak-proof!
