Why has this website been set up?
This website is part of Lancashire's Home Composting scheme, which is being coordinated by HDRA Consultants in partnership with Lancashire County Council and local district and unitary authorities. The aim of the scheme is to distribute over 60,000 home compost bins throughout Lancashire over three years.

The compost bins are free and available to any householder who is resident in Lancashire. This is possible as the scheme is being supported by The Lancashire Environmental Fund.

I got one of these last year. It's great! :)

They delivered a black bin which is open at the bottom. It needs to sit on soil so that the worms can get in.

They also delivered a small green lidded bin which you keep in your kitchen. It came with two rolls or biodegradeable bags. You line the bin with the bag, fill it with peelings and stuff then throw the whole lot into the composter. :)

They won't send me one. Even though the website clearly says that it's for all residents of Lancashire. I apparently don't live in the right bit of Lancashire

I live near Wigan so they wouldn't send me one either - not quite the right part of Lancashire - so I checked out Wigan, I couldn't find a free one but you get the same 220ltr Convertabin for £5.00 plus a free kitchen caddy and liners the link for anyone interested is http://www.wiganmbc.gov.uk/pub/beng/recycling/pdf/HomeCompostingMay05.pdf
You need to print it off & post it (Freepost)

We got ours last year - it's great.

We do have a problem with the amount of fruit flies in the summer. Has anyone got any suggestions for keeping the fruit fly population down. The only thing I found on the internet was to leave the lid off, when the weather's good, as natural preditors will eat them.

But no luck.

Yes. Had ours two years now.

Flies - yes but not a major nuisance.

But, we've been filling ours for two years and it never gets full. We put loads of garden waste in and loads of kitchen waste but it's like filling a bottomless pit. It never gets full . . . . .

Must be some very big earthworms around here.
